INSCRIPO

Eu vi a luz em um paiz perdido.

A minha alma languida e inerme.
Oh! Quem podesse deslisar sem ruido!
No cho sumir-se, como faz um verme...

SONTOS

Tatuagens complicadas do meu peito:

--Trophos, emblemas, dois lees aldos...
Mais, entre coraes engrinaldados,
Um enorme, soberbo, amor-perfeito...

E o meu brazo...

Timbre: rompante, a megalomania...

Lembrando ruinas, sepulturas rasas...

E minha obcesso! Para bebe-lo
Fui teu labio oscular, n'um pesadlo,
Por noites de pavor, cheio de medo.

E o meu osculo ardente, allucinado,

Esfriou sobre o marmore correcto
D'esse entreaberto labio gelado...

D'esse labio de marmore, discreto,

Severo como um tumulo fechado,
Serno como um plago quieto.

PHONOGRAPHO

Vae declamando um comico defunto,

Uma plata ri, perdidamente,
Do bom jarreta... E ha um odr no ambiente
A crypta e a p,--do anachronico assumpto.

Muda o registo, eis uma barcarola:

Lirios, lirios, aguas do rio, a lua...
Ante o Seu corpo o sonho meu fluctua
Sobre um pal,--exttica corolla.

Muda outra vez: gorgeios, estribilhos

Vivido e agro!--tocando a alvorada...

Cessou. E, amorosa, a alma das cornetas

Quebrou-se agora orvalhada e velada.
Primavera. Manh.

Oh vem! Meus olhos querem desposar-te
Reflectir-te virgem a serena imagem.

De silva doida uma haste esquva

Quo delicada te osculou num dedo
Com um aljfar cr de rosa viva!...

Ligeira a saia... Doce brisa impelle-a...

Oh vem! De branco! Do immo do arvoredo...
Alma de sylpho, carne de camelia...
Esvelta surge! Vem das aguas, nua,
Timonando uma concha alvinitente!
Os rins flexiveis e o seio fremente...
Morre-me a bocca por beijar a tua.

Sem vil pudr! Do que ha que ter vergonha?

Eis-me formoso, mo e casto, forte.
To branco o peito!--para o expr Morte...

A hydra torpe!... Que a estrangulo... Esmago-a

Fiquei s! Fra um acto anthipatico!
Deserta a Ilha, e no lenol aquatico
Tudo verde, verde,--a perder de vista.

Porque vos fostes, minhas caravellas,

Carregadas de todo o meu thesoiro?
--Longas teias de luar de lhama de oiro,
Legendas a diamantes das estrellas!

Quem vos desfez, formas inconsistentes,

Por cujo amor escalei a muralha,
--Leo armado, uma espada nos dentes?

Felizes vs, mortos da batalha!

Sonhaes, de costas, nos olhos abertos
Reflectindo as estrellas, boquiabertos...

Onde esperei morrer,--meus to castos lenoes?

E me espalhou a lenha? E me entornou o vinho?
--Da minha vinha o vinho acidulado e fresco...

minha pobre me!... No te ergas mais da cova,

Olha a noite, olha o vento. Em ruina a casa nova...
Dos meus ossos o lume a extinguir-se breve.
No venhas mais ao lar. No vagabundes mais.
Alma da minha me...

D'onde vaes a correr, desatinado?
Meus olhos incendidos que o peccado
Queimou... Voltae horas de paz.

Vergam da neve os olmos dos caminhos,

A cinza arrefeceu sobre o brazido.
Noites da serra, o casebre transido...
--Scismae meus olhos como dois velhinhos...

Extnctas primaveras evocae-as:

--J vae florir o pomar das maceiras,
Hemos de enfeitar os chapeus de maias--

Socegae, esfriae, olhos febrs.

--E hemos de ir cantar nas derradeiras
Ladainhas... Doces vozes sens...--

Floriram por engano as rosas bravas

No inverno: veio o vento desfolhal-as...
Em que scismas, meu bem? Porque me callas
As vozes com que ha pouco me enganavas?

Castellos doidos! To cedo cahistes!...

Onde vamos, alheio o pensamento,

Quem as esparze--quanta flr--, do ceo,
Sobre ns dois, sobre os nossos cabellos?

E eis quanto resta do idyllio acabado,

--Primavera que durou um momento...
Como vo longe as manhs do convento!
--Do alegre conventinho abandonado...

Tudo acabou... Anemonas, hydrangeas.

Silindras,--flres to nossas amigas!
No claustro agora vam as ortigas,
Rojam-se cobras pelas velhas lageas.

Sobre a inscripo do teu nome deldo!

--Que os meus olhos mal podem solletrar,
Canados... E o aroma fenecido

Que se evola do teu nome vulgar!

Ennobreceu-o a quietao do olvido.
 doce, ingenua, inscripo tumular.

Singra o navio. Sob a agua clara

--Impeccavel figura peregrina,
A distancia sem fim que nos sepra!

Seixinhos da mais alva porcelana,

Conchinhas tenuemente cr de rosa,
Na fria transparencia luminosa
Repousam, fundos, sob a agua plana.

E a vista sonda, reconstrue, compra.

Tantos naufragios, perdies, destros!
-- fulgida viso, linda mentira!

Roseas unhinhas que a mar partira...

Dentinhos que o vaivem desengastra...
Conchas, pedrinhas, pedacinhos de ossos...

Foi um dia de inuteis agonias.

Dia de sol, inundado de sol!...
Fulgiam nuas as espadas frias...
Dia de sol, inundado de sol!...

Foi um dia de falsas alegrias.

Dhlia a esfolhar-se,--o seu molle sorriso...
Voltavam os ranchos das romarias.
Dhlia a esfolhar-se,--o seu molle sorriso...

Dia impressivel mais que os outros dias.

To lcdo... To pallido... To lcido!...

To lcido... To pallido... To lcdo!...

Passou o outono j, j torna o frio...

--Outono do seu riso maguado.
Algido inverno! Obliquo o sol, gelado...
--O sol, e as aguas limpidas do rio.

Aguas claras do rio! Aguas do rio,

Fugindo sob o meu olhar canado,
Para onde me levaes meu vo cuidado?
Aonde vaes, meu corao vazo?

Ficae, cabellos d'ella, fluctuando,

E, debaixo das aguas fugidias,
Os seus olhos abertos e scismando...

Onde ides a correr, melancolias?

--E, refractadas, longamente ondeando,
As suas mos translucidas e frias...

Quando voltei encontrei os meus passos

Ainda frescos sobre a humida areia,
A fugitiva hora, reevoqueia,
--To redviva! nos meus olhos baos...

At que a azita ffa lhe fallea...

Toda essa extensa pista--para qu?

Se ha-de vir apagar-vos a mar,
Como as do novo rasto que comea...

Imagens que passaes pela retina

Dos meus olhos, porque no vos fixaes?
Que passaes como a agua crystallina
Por uma fonte para nunca mais!...

Ou para o lago escuro onde termina

Vosso curso, silente de juncaes,
E o vago mdo angustioso domina,

--O espelho inutil, meus olhos pagos!
Aridez de successivos desertos...

Fica sequer, sombra das minhas mos,

Flexo casual de meus dedos incertos,
--Estranha sombra em movimentos vos.
POESIAS

Quando se erguero as setteiras,

Outra vez, do castello em ruina,
E haver gritos e bandeiras
Na fria aragem matutina?

Se ouvr tocar a rebate

Sobre a planicie abandonada?
E sahiremos ao combate
De cota e elmo e a longa espada?

Quando iremos, tristes e srios,

Nas prolixas e vs contendas,
Soltando juras, improperios,
Pelas divisas e legendas?

E voltaremos, os antigos
E purissimos lidadores,
(Quantos trabalhos e perigos!)
Quasi mortos e vencedores?

. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .

E quando, Dce Infanta Real,

Nos sorrirs do belveder?
--Magra figura de vitral,
Por quem ns fomos combater...

No sei se isto amor. Procuro o teu olhar,

Se alguma dr me fere, em busca de um abrigo;
Onde fosses feliz, e eu feliz comtigo.

A tua cr sadia, o teu sorriso terno,

Rufando apressado,
E bamboleado.
Bonet posto ao lado,

Garboso, o tambor
Avana em redor
Do campo de amor...

Com fora, soldado!

A passo dobrado!
Bem bamboleado!

Amores te bafejem.
Que as moas te beijem.
Que os moos te invejem.

Mas ai, soldado!

 triste alienado!
Por mais exaltado

Que o toque reclame,

Ninguem que te chame...
Ninguem que te ame...

Ao meu corao um peso de ferro

Eu hei-de prender na volta do mar.
Ao meu corao um peso de ferro...
Lanal-o ao mar.

Quem vae embarcar, que vae degredado...

As penas do amor no queira levar...
Marujos, erguei o cofre pesado,
Lanae-o ao mar.

E hei-de mercar um fecho de prata.

O meu corao o cofre sellado.
A sete chaves: tem dentro uma carta...
--A ultima, de antes do teu noivado.

A sete chaves,--a carta encantada!

CREPUSCULAR

Ha no ambiente um murmurio de queixume,

De desejos de amor, d'ais comprimidos...
Uma ternura esparsa de balidos,
Sente-se esmorecer como um perfume.

As madre-silvas murcham nos silvados

E o arma que exhalam pelo espao,
Tem delquios de gso e de cansao
Nervosos, femininos, delcados.

Sentem-se espasmos, agonias d'ave,

Inaprehensiveis, minimas, sernas...
--Tenho entre as mos as tuas mos pequenas.
O meu olhar no teu olhar suave.

As tuas mos to brancas d'anemia...

Os teus olhos to meigos de tristeza...
-- este enlanguescer da natureza,
Este vago sofrer do fim do dia.

Se andava no jardim,
Que cheiro de jasmm!
To branca do luar!

. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Eis tenho-a junto a mim.

Vencida, minha, emfim,
Aps tanto a sonhar...

Porque entristeo assim?...

No era ella, mas sim
(O que eu quiz abraar),

A hora do jardim...
O aroma de jasmim...
A onda do luar...

Depois das bodas de oiro,

Da hora promettida,
No se que mau agoiro
Me ennoiteceu a vida...

Temo de regressar...
E mata-me a saudade...
--Mas de me recordar
No sei que dr me invade.

Nem quero prosseguir,

Trilhar novos caminhos,
Meus pobres ps, dorir,
J roxos dos espinhos.

Nem ficar... e morrer...

Perder-te, imagem vaga...
Cessar... No mais te vr...
Como uma luz se apaga...

O meu corao desce,

Um balo apagado...
--Melhor fra que ardesse,
Nas trevas, incendiado.

Na bruma fastidienta,
Como um caixo cova...
--Porque antes no rebenta
De dr violenta e nova?!

Que apgo ainda o sustem?

Atomo miserando...
--Se o esmagasse o trem
D'um comboio arquejando!...

O inane, vil despojo

Da alma egoista e fraca!
Trouxesse-o o mar de rojo
Levasse-o na ressaca.

Chorae arcadas
Do vloncello!
Convulsionadas,
Pontes aladas
De pesadelo...

De que esvoaam,
Brancos, os arcos...
Por baixo passam,
Se despedaam,
No rio, os barcos.

Fundas, soluam
Caudaes de chro...
Que ruinas, (ouam)!
Se se debruam,
Que sorvedouro!...

Trmulos astros...
Soides lacustres...
--Lemes e mastros...
E os alabastros
Dos balaustres!

Urnas quebradas!
Blocos de gelo...
--Chorae arcadas,
Despedaadas,
Do viloncello.

E a orchestra? E os beijos? Tudo a noite, fora,

Cauta, detem. S modulada trila
A flauta flebil...

Unida s paredes,

Se vens, s escuras,
Confiar-me ao ouvido
No sei que amarguras...

Suspiras ou fallas?
Porque o gemido,
O sopro que exhalas?

Dir-se-hia que rezas.

Murmuras baixinho
No sei que tristezas...

--Ser teu companheiro?

No sei o caminho.
Eu sou estrangeiro.

--Passados amores?--
Animas-te, dizes
No sei que terrores...

Fraquinha, deliras.
--Projectos felizes?--
Suspiras. Expiras.

Na cadeia os bandidos presos!

O seu ar de contemplativos!
Que das feras de olhos acesos?!
Pobres dos seus olhos captivos.

Passeiam mudos entre as grades,

Parecem peixes n'um aquario.
--Campo florido das Saudades
Porque rebentas tumultuario?

Serenos... Serenos... Serenos...

Trouxe-os algemados a escolta.
--Extranha taa de venenos
Meu corao sempre em revolta.

Corao, quietinho... quietinho...

Porque te insurges e blasfemas?
Pschiu... No batas... De vagarinho...
Olha os soldados, as algemas!
FINAL

 cores virtuaes que jazeis subterraneas,

--Fulguraes azues, vermelhos de hemoptyse,
Represados clares, chromaticas vesanias--,
No limbo onde esperaes a luz que vos baptise,

As palpebras cerrae, anciosas no veleis.

Vagamente sorris, resignados e atheus,

Adormecei. No suspireis. No respireis.

owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you

the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."

- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License. You must require such a user to return or
destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
Project Gutenberg-tm works.

- You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any

money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days
of receipt of the work.

- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

1.E.9. If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm

electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark. Contact the
Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable

effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right

of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH F3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a

defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied

warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.
Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of

electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the

assistance they need, is critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg

Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide

spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating

charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit http://pglaf.org

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we

have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make

any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including including checks, online payments and credit card
donations. To donate, please visit: http://pglaf.org/donate

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic

works.

Professor Michael S. Hart is the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm

concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed

editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.

Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:

http://www.gutenberg.net

This Web site includes information about Project Gutenberg-tm,

including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
