In this experiment: I will be investigating which chocolate Year 8 prefers the best, due to the
recent amount of Bad Behaviour and Immaturity. This research is useful as schools can learn
how to tame these young adults. Their favourite chocolate can be prized upon answering a
question or behaving/working well.
After completing this experiment, I found out that Cadburys Dairy Milk was most preferred
due to no covering/coating/shell. M&Ms making it to the Favourable and Smarties as the
least preferred.

My prediction consists of Year 8 Students preferring Cadburys Dairy Milk chocolate due to
its extraordinary taste. As they say Simplicity is Blessed/Best. Also itd be most preferred
because its the melt of the chocolate in your mouth which relaxes most consumers and
provides them the taste of a lifetime.

To Perform the Experiment:
1 x Cadburys Dairy Milk Block
12 x Sweet Smarties Boxes (1 Pack)
1 x M&Ms Packet
6 x Year 8 Students (Including Control)
6 x Blindfolds
6 x Chairs/Seats
1 x Table

To Record The Results:
1 x Sheet of Paper
1 x Pencil/Pen
1 x Ruler
2 x Weeks (At Most)

Controlled Variables Independent Variable Dependent Variable The Control

1. Test the 6 x Year 8 Students separately to not get one influenced by another person for
ratings. [E.g. Michael rates it 8 because Chris did.]
2. Make them sit in a safe place so they cannot fall over whilst blindfolded.
3. Blindfold all of them not too tight to harm/hurt the person.
4. Make them all consume 4 M&Ms each. (M&Ms MUST be of the same colour)
5. Provide 30 Seconds for each person to rate the chocolate from 1 to 10.
6. Repeat the process twice more for M&Ms on the same day.
7. Provide a day for the tastebuds to settle before testing another chocolate. [To not cancel out
the taste of the chocolate consumed later; this might taste not as sweet as the previous
one.]
8. Repeat steps 1-7 with the other chocolates: Smarties and Cadburys Dairy Milk Buttons.
(Also provide 4 of each in one test, repeated three times.)
Recording the Results and How:
1. Record the results quantitatively in a table of all 3 tests from all of the 6 x Year 8
Students.
2. Find the average of each persons rating from their 3 tests upon each chocolate. [E.g.
Chris- M&Ms = 5.5, Smarties = 6.6 and so forth.]
3. Find the average of ratings each chocolate received by the 6 x Year 8 students. [E.g.
M&Ms = 6.6, Smarties = 8.5 and henceforth.]
4. Graph the final results of Step 3.
5. Compare the results of these with the Controls Ratings. (Shivs Ratings)

Observations:
Test Summary M&Ms (Grouped from all Tests):
Shivam bit into the M&M and smiled showing past experience with the taste though
he said, Ive tasted this before, dont know what its called though Not figuring out
the chocolate until the end of the experiment when I told him the name.
Chris recognised the shape and taste of the 2 x M&Ms placed in his mouth, instantly
when contact occurred with his tongue and the chocolates. Stating, I buy these every
day after school! How can I forget my favourite?
Huseyin completely scrunched up his face when he tasted the chocolate, saying, I dont
like it. Nope, NEVER in my life have I tasted such Giving the chocolate a lower rating
every test screaming that Im over the moon with experiments and should choose non-
poisonous foods to experiment with.

Observations: Test Summary M&Ms (Grouped from all Tests):
Katrina ate the chocolate in peace, keeping a straight face before having a hard think
about what she would rate it. Putting her finger on her chin for the rest of the thinking
time before saying, Ive tasted many chocolates before; maybe you can call me a
chocolate expert. I wont rate it 10/10, thats obvious since Ive tasted better
Zach was freaking out before eating the chocolate blindly, stating that I might be a serial
killer for all he knows After eating the chocolate, he made some weird faces before
saying, Ooh, might as well give me Turkish Delight! Finding he wasnt too fond of the
chocolate, he rated it not too low, but not in the high ranks either
Hasan seemed to not react too much with any chocolate he asked for more after
tasting but stayed expressionless during the experiment. He is fond with ANY chocolate
you give him; he basically rated every chocolate above average.
Test Summary Cadburys Dairy Milk (Grouped from all Tests):
Shivam melted the blocks first before complaining its too big to fit in his mouth which
was all a groan and un-definable words. After melting the chocolate, he looked calm and
relaxed Stating afterwards that he had forgotten they were doing an experiment,
looking lost when I asked him for ratings. Its one of the casual Milk Chocolates, I know
that. But I like jelly-like sweets like the Turkish delight than these types. Though its not
too bad
Chris was also having problems with the size of the chocolate blocks, which he kept
silent about. Though it was pretty evident on his face that he was trying to not
accidently spit one out. Delicious Ive tasted many milk chocolates before, no idea
which one this is but Im guessing you melted a Freddo Frog and reshaped him? Its
one of my favourites but not number 1.
Huseyin TRIED to fit the blocks of Dairy Milk in his mouth, but failed miserable and
dropped three half-melted, half-solid blocks of it on the ground after choking on a bit
of it which tried to enter the wrong tube in his throat. Fortunately, he didnt get severely
damaged but he had to be fed the blocks one by one for the other two tests.
Katrina made weird faces and indicated to me to separate the blocks so she can fit it all
in at once. She placed one on one side of the mouth, two on the other and one on the
tongue which was the smartest move from all of my friends. She instantly recognised
the chocolate due to the shape and the companys engraved name on the chocolate
which was placed faced down against the tongue. These have been my favourite since I
was 8 years old!

Observations: Test Summary Cadburys Dairy Milk (Grouped from all Tests):
Zach looked unsure of how he would be able to melt the blocks in his mouth, over-filling
his mouth with melted chocolate when he did. He drooled some of the liquid onto the
floor and his chair, which he was disgusted to find after being unblinded. Saying he
preferred the chocolate over some of his few favourites but not over his Nerds. Realising
after the test that this was his 2
nd
favourite chocolate which he had failed to recognise.
Damn, feels like I just cheated myself thanks for making me realise I dont like the
chocolate by the looks! and Phew, maybe shove a couple of blocks not a billion!?
Hasan stayed expressionless yet again in these tests demanding more... He was the
only person who didnt struggle with the size of the chocolate. Boasting hes used to
eating two slices of pizza in two bites. Loving it. Never tasted such before, Im going to
put it in my soft-serve next time we go to McDonalds
Test Summary Smarties (Grouped from all Tests):
Shiv was not too pleased with the chocolate as it also got stuck in his Molar teeth,
making a forced joking smile as he would smash me when Ive done my experiment.
Not too bad but if these companies also provide chocolates that dont get stuck, Id be
a lot grateful.
Chris seemed to enjoy the taste at the start but quickly stated he was sick of such
chocolates. He rated the chocolate an average in his 1
st
test but fewer than 6 on his next
two tests. These chocolates might be preferred by you, Pranjal. But, I am sick of small
chocolates. Id rather have the blocks you gave me yesterday.
Huseyin re-acted over-dramatically whilst it was most unexpected. He spit them all out
after biting into one. Saying it would be as bad as the M&Ms If you have no better
chocolates to feed me, Ill starve hungry but not be in your experiments. Test better
chocolates man, like Kit-Kat! A 10/10 for Kit-Kat but this is UNBEARABLE!
Katrina looks affectionate towards the Smarties that she consumed but slowly, her
face scrunched a bit and she stated they were as bad as M&Ms. Though I wouldnt
mind having them if I was offered it. But if it were sitting on the table, Id eat Turkish
Delights!
Zach started off with feeling the Smarties with his tongue before chewing on one and
declaring he was done with the experiment. He spit three at my face and said, Youre
dead the moment I take this blindfolds off. They are literally the worst youve ever given
me! No jelly chocolates in your experiment. WHY!?
Hasan, once again, didnt seem to mind eating any chocolates. He looked as if the
greatest misfortune had struck him, but that he called his Bored Look. Its not too bad
but if I were the producer of this chocolate, I would strangle myself to DEATH!

Explaining the Observations:
The observations made during this experiment prove that Smarties were the most
HATED as they were spat out a few times... also proving that M&Ms are one of the ones
that might be favourable by Year 8s but its not enough to tame them to behave
properly. Consequently, only Dairy Milk is usable to tame any Year 8 without any bad
reactions upon consuming the chocolate, making it the most preferable.
A Problem and how it was Managed:
Although the experiment went as fine as expected, I did encounter one problem during
the tests: 4 x Dairy Milk Blocks were considered too large to fit in the persons mouth.
Due to this problem, one of the people (Huseyin Zengin) ended up choking on it;
fortunately, no severe injuries occurred. The only solution to eliminate this problem,
included giving them 4 x Blocks separately working smoothly when the process with
Dairy Milk was repeated with Huseyin and the others.
Improvements that couldve been made to Improve Accuracy include:
Not testing a sample of Year 8s but the whole Year 8 of G.H.S.
Feeding the students the same meal for the day to not differ chocolate taste due
to the taste of the meal.
Include more varieties of chocolates to check the Year 8s preference more
accurately.
Not testing a sample of Year 8s but the whole Year 8 of the world.
(Hard but expensive and possible)
Relationship between the Variables/Trend in Data:
The independent variables did indeed have a relationship between each other: they were all
sweet chocolates, though differing in ingredients and coatings which altered the final
ratings. In my opinion, the Dairy Milk was liked the best since it did NOT have any shell
coatings; teenagers prefer more chocolate, less shells.

Trend in Data are found on the following page

9 | P a g e

Reasons why Smarties were beaten by M&Ms include:
The shell of a Smarties chocolate is a lot thicker than the shell of an M&M; which can
provide the consumer a more crunchy chocolate or a chocolate which provides more
of a chocolate punch. Proven by the results, Year 8 students like more of the
chocolate punch rather than crunchiness.
Pictures provided for evidence: (Shell Thickness)

The shell of the Smarties is made of wheat flour, corn-starch and sugar whilst the
M&M shell is made of sugar and corn-starch excluding the colouring which is
present in both.
Although the wheat flour might not be a big factor in taste, it does add the cracking
noise and feel upon chewing which is undetectable in the M&M pebble. This factor
defines one of the smallest differences between the two chocolates, a factor which
influences a Year 8 to rate a chocolate the complete opposite of what it couldve
been without the ingredient of wheat flour.
The amount of chocolate filled in each of the two chocolates differed due to their
size and space. The Smarties is 1.5cm in diameter whilst the M&M is 1cm in
diameter but does it mean the bigger one will contain more chocolate? BUT, the
Smarties are flatter in comparison to the M&M.
The Smarties is estimated to be 30% shell and 70% chocolate whereas the M&M
provides 10<% shell and 90>%.

Why was Cadburys Dairy Milk most Preferred:
Most teenagers or particularly Year 8, prefer chocolates without shells. The only
chocolate tested in this experiment without a shell coating was the Dairy Milk
which showed a difference in the results between the three chocolates.
Dairy Milk wasnt as sweet as the M&M or Smarties which defines that Year 8s do
not prefer a great quantity of sugar.
Availability to chocolate only. Due to no shells and no extra ingredients than pure
Milk Chocolate, the Dairy Milk was liked best. This defines Year 8s prefer JUST
chocolate, not extras.

Future Area of Interest and Relations to the Real World:
This investigation is indeed related to real life situations where Year 8 students or Teenagers
on the whole, are not behaving properly at either home or school. A future area of interest
can include researchers after me trying to tame these Year 8 students by treating them like
a dog. Literally a dog. Feeding them a treat when behaving properly. In the greed of
chocolates, a Year 8 student is willing to give up bad behaviour. Relating to this topic in the
future would still prove useful, not only to tame Year 8 but people above and below this
year group.
For a block of chocolate, murdering is a possibility Quoted by the great Hernan Cortes
when he first tasted hot chocolate and saw its magnificent products made by the Aztecs.
Conclusively, Smarties and M&Ms seemed to be equally preferred until the quantitative
results came in. The Cadburys Dairy Milk was the Best as named/proved. In the end,
M&Ms did beat Smarties average ratings, proving that Smarties is not a chocolate usable
to tame a Year 8 but frustrate them instead.
My aim was successfully achieved and may be used in future to decrease the bad
behaviour from Year 8.
As my hypothesis stated, the Year 8s DID prefer Cadburys Dairy Milk over the others
due to its simplicity and extraordinary taste. The whole sample group stated it is the
best as it has the taste that gives you a relaxation moment before hyping you up of
sugar also stating that it was the shells that ruined the taste of the chocolate inside.

End of the Experiment: Some extra notices: RGHHH
Hope you had a great time reading my experiment, though it looks really boring from my
perspective. I had fun performing this experiment and completed it for educational
purposes as well
Not too hopeful on the results, but an average mark is what Im looking for. :D
xD Just saying, I hope the title pages extra writing doesnt deduct marks
~Sigh, just bring less difficult assessments next year
Lastly, Thanks For Reading!
