ComeDiscoverAnAncestor(CDAA)isahalfdayopenhousestyleeventbeingheldat
thenewstateoftheartDarienLibrary.Theeventisdesignedtohelpindividualsand
familiesgainagreaterappreciationofhowfamilyhistorycanbeafunandcaptivating
experienceforthewholefamily.Youcanlearnhowfamilyhistorycanenhancefamilylife
now,helpnurtureasenseoffamilyidentityandinstilladeepersenseoffamilypride.
Participantswillexplorefirsthandhowlearningmoreabouttheirancestorscanbeafun
familyactivityforchildrenofallages.
Theconferencewillprovidethroughitskeynoteandbreakoutsessionsaninformal
handsonlearningexperienceastogetstartedinfamilyhistoryincludinghowtouse
simpletouseInternetbasedtoolstoresearchtheirfamilytree.
CDAAwillfeatureanopeningkeynotespeakerfollowedachoiceofthreedifferent40
minuteworkshopsonsuchsubjectsashowtousesocialmediatoconnecttoyourfamily,
howtowriteapersonalhistory,howtogetstartedinfamilyhistoryresearchandaspecial
workshopfocusedondiscoveringancestorartifactsonline.Theeventwillconcludewith
closingremarksandrefreshments.

GettingStartedonFamilySearch
Thisworkshopisintendedfornewcomerstofamilywhohaveaninterestinexploringhowto
dofamilyhistoryresearchandwhopossessbasiccomputerskills.Theworkshopwill
includeabasicintroductiontoFamilySearch.org.Participantswilllearnhowtoopenan
account,howtouseFamilySearchtoconstructafamilytreeaswellashowtoadd
informationtotheirfamilytreesuchasnotesandpictures.
HavingfunwithyourfamilyTree
Thisworkshopintendedforyouthages1418andwillfeaturehandsonlearningaboutour
ancestorsandtheircountriesoforigin.Participantswilldiscoverthefunofrecordsindexing
byparticipatinginatranscriptionprojectdividingintoteamsforaraceastoforwhocan
transcribeasetofrecordsintosearchableformthefastest.
GettingStartedonYourPersonalHistory
Thisworkshopwillprovideparticipantswithaneasyframeworkandpracticalfreeonline
resourcestowriteandsharetheirpersonalhistory.Participantswilltakepartina
discussiononjournals,blogging,andphotosharingaspartofdocumentingandpreserving
ourpersonalhistories.
ComeDiscoveranAncestor
Thisspecialworkshopallowspreregisteredparticipantstoreceiveanartifactconnected
toanancestor.Volunteerswillassistpreregisteredparticipantswithsearchingforand
printingartifactssuchascensussheets,shipsmanifestsandotheroriginaldocuments
pertainingtotheirfamilymembers.Volunteerswillalsoassistnonregisteredparticipants
inresearchingtheirancestorsandviewinginformationaboutthem.
Registrantswillbeaskedtoprovidetheeventcommitteewiththenameandpersonal
informationforoneoftheirancestors.Thispersonshouldbebornbetween1800and1940,
preferablyintheUnitedStates.Othercountriesoforiginare,ofcourse,acceptableaswell,
buttheavailabilityoforiginalrecordsonlinefromsomecountriesisverylimited.
Registrantswillbeaskedtoprovidethename,birthdate(approximateisacceptable),and
birthplace(atleastthestate)forthisperson.Anyfamilyrelationships(children,spouse,
siblings,parents)theyprovideforthispersonwillalsobeveryhelpful.
Uponreceiptofthisinformation,thecommitteememberschargedwithresearch(Elderand
SisterDraperandtheirteam)willdotheneccessary"prework"includingidentifying
significantdocumentsconnectiontothatancestorthatregistrantswillreceiveat
theconference.

ThissessionprovidesanopportunitytowatchFamilySearchandRootsTechvideocontent.A
volunteerwillpresentashortmessageandthenshowvideosrelatedtofamilyhistoryresearch.
OneononeAssistancewithFamilySearch
Thisworkshopwillbesetupininthecommunityroomfollowingtheopeningremarksand
keynoteandwillruncontinuouslyuntiltheclosingremarks.Theintentofthisworkshopisto
provideoneononeassistancewithallaspectsofFamilySearchtargetingbeginningto
intermediateuserswhohavequestionsorneedmoreadvancedassistancefrom
experiencedusers.
