The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centres independent, annual report Global Estimates: People Displaced by Disasters has become the established reference for policy-makers providing evidence on the global scale, scope and nature of displacement caused by disasters related to storms, floods and earthquakes.
Over the first five years reported on so far around 143 million people became displaced due to disasters worldwide, mostly related to climate or weather hazards. The 2014 report includes the latest global figures and analysis of displacement in 2013 and the previous five years (2008-2012) covering 161 countries. The largest mass displacement of 2013 involved 4.1 million forced to flee their homes in the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines. The evolving situation is looked at more closely, as is the complex crisis in South Sudan where natural hazards and violence collide.
For the first time this year, IDMC sets the displacement caused by disasters in a wider historical context, by modelling the rising displacement trend since 1970. While extreme and frequent natural hazards act as an important trigger to disaster and displacement, findings point to the exposure and vulnerability of growing populations as the main driver shaping this trend for the next few decades. This shows that much more can be done to prevent, mitigate and prepare for the increasing amount displacement disasters are expected to cause in the future.
We hope that you can join us for this important event.
