DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
A signal is a function of one or more independent variables.
y1 = sin (2 . Pi. 10. t);
How many independent variables?
This is a 1D signal.
How do you represent a gray scale image pixel?
Y = F (x, y);
Y = F (x
1
, x
2
, ,x
M
)
A signal can be M- dimensional.

This photograph is a ____ D signal?
SIGNAL
A black and white video is a ___D signal?
A color video signal is a___ D signal?
3 channel and 3D signal.
SIGNAL
A signal is called scalar valued if its value is unique for every instant
of independent variables.
If a signal has multiple values at any instant, it is called as vector
valued signal.
Ex:
Black and white image ?
Colour image?
In this course we will mostly discuss and process 1-D scalar signal
with time as the independent variable.
Analyze the following signal. Indicate which type of signal is this?
X1(t) = 2t
X2(t) = 3+ j sin (2*pi*t)
X3(t) = (t
2
, x
1
(t), x
2

Digital Signal
Natural signal are analog in nature.
They can be processed by analog processor.
Give example of analog processing device?
The two dimensional benefit has popularized the digital signal processing.

Digital Signal
DSP use digital signals which are basically numbers for processing.
The analog signal F(t) is sampled, then quantized and designated as F[n].
Each sample is F[n] is a integer, which is manipulated using different
algorithmic and arithmetic operations.

Three basic operations used in DSP are:
Multiplication
Addition
Delaying
