physics: Force and laws of Motion
An object of mass 2 kg is sliding with a constant velocity of 4 m/ s on a
frictionless horiontaltable! "he force re#$ired to keep the object moving with the
same velocity is
%a& '2 ( %b& ) ( %c& 2 ( %d&
* ( Ans: %b+
,ocket works on the principle of conservation of
%a& mass %b& energy %c& moment$m %d&
velocity
Ans: -c+
A car is moving at 4. km/hr!A constant force acts on the car for /) sc !0o that it1s
velocity becomes 2' km/hr !"he distance travelled by car d$ring this interval of
/) sec is :
a& /)) m b& /.) m c& 2)) m d&
.) m Ans: -b+

3hat is the de4nition of balanced and $nbalanced force5
Ans: 3hen two e#$al forces acting on an object in opposite directions called
balanced force! When something does not move the forces are balanced, e.g.
Gravity pulls a tabledown but that table is pushed up by the foor or the ground it
stands on so doesnt move.
An Unbalanced force is needed for something to change movement or change
direction, e.g. a seesaw moving up and down because the forces are not equal.
Net force: 6 "he s$m of all the forces acting on a body is known as net force!
7i8erence between 9alanced force and $nbalanced force!
Ans: Balanced force:6 :f net force on a body is ero it is called balanced force!
9alanced forces do not ca$se a change in motion! "hey are e#$al in magnit$de
and opposite in direction! "herefore; the res$ltant of these forces will be ero!
<=ample: "wo persons p$shing a bo= with the same force in opposite directions!
Unbalanced forces:6 :f net force on a body is non6ero it is called $nbalanced
force!
Forces whose res$ltant is not e#$al to ero are called $nbalanced forces! For
e=ample: An arm wrestling competition among a strong person and a weak one!
"he res$ltant force will be in the direction of the force applied by the strong
person!
3hat :s :nertia
Ans: 9y (ewton1s law we know that ;a body at rest will remain at rest and a body
in motion will contin$e in a straight line $nless it is compelled by an e=ternal
force!"his tendency of a body is called inertia!0o we can say that 1:nertia is that
property of a body d$e to which it resists a change in its state of rest or of
$niform motion!1
3hen the brakes are applied to the bike the back seater moves forward why5
3hen the bike accelerates s$ddenly the back seater who was initially at rest
e=periences a force of friction at the point of contact between him and the bike!
>is inertia of rest tries to keep him at rest which res$lts in a backward p$sh!
"h$s; the back seater moves backwards when the bike accelerates s$ddenly!
3hen the brakes are applied the inertia of motion of the back seater
tries to keep him in motion so he moves forward!
"here are three solids made $p of al$mini$m; steel and wood; of the same shape
and same vol$me! 3hich of them wo$ld have highest inertia5
Ans: 0ince steel has greatest density and greatest mass; therefore; it has highest
inertia!
As the mass is a meas$re of inertia; the ball of same shape and sie; having more
mass than other balls will have highest inertia!
"wo balls of the same sie b$t of di8erent materials; r$bber and iron are kept on
the smooth ?oor of a moving train! "he brakes are applied s$ddenly to stop the
train! 3ill the balls start rolling5 :f so; in which direction5 3ill they move with the
same speed5 @ive reasons for yo$r answer
Ans: Aes! the balls will start rolling in the direction in which the train was moving!
7$e to the application of the brakes; the train comes to rest b$t d$e to inertia the
balls try to remain in motion; therefore; they begin to roll!
0ince the masses of the balls are not the same; therefore; the inertial forces are
also not same on both the balls! "h$s; the balls will move with di8erent speeds!
>orse need contin$es of force in order to move a cart with a constant speed!
3hy5
>orse need contin$es of force in order to move a cart with a constant speed to
balances the force of friction!
3rite a short note on third law of motion
Ans: Third law of motion : "his law deals with the forces between bodies that
appear inpairs! t says that !every action has an equal and opposite reaction"
3hen yo$ stand on the gro$nd; yo$r weight p$shes the gro$nd downwardsB
does this makethe gro$nd to move downward5 (o; beca$se the gro$nd p$shes
yo$ $pward with a force e#$al to yo$r weight and hence these e#$al
and opposite forces cancel o$t and yo$ stand onthe gro$nd balanced!
Force by yo$ on the gro$nd and force on yo$ by the gro$nd are two e#$al
and oppositeforces acting in pairs at the s$rface that is common to both yo$
and the gro$nd!
(ewtonCs '
rd
law of motion is applicable wherever there is action6reaction force
pair! Dike walking; shooting with a pistol; collision; rocket propelling; etc!
>ow a karate player can break a pile of tiles with a single blow of his hand5
Ans: Earate player strikes the piles in a very short time in a very small area!
0ince; imp$lse; : F F G t H F F :/t! :f ItC will be very short the force becomes
very large and act on smaller area !"his prod$ce eno$gh press$re by his hand on
break the brick
7e4ne moment$m5
Ans: Moment$m %Dinear moment$m& for moving body is de4ned as the prod$ct of
mass and velocity! :f a body is moving with velocity; v and having mass; m then
moment$m of body is p F m = v!
Moment$m is a vector #$antity! :ts direction is the same as that of velocity! 0:
$nit of moment$m %p& is kg6m/s
<=plain why it is easier to stop a tennis ball than a cricket ball moving with the
same speed5
Jricket ball has more moment$m than the tennis ball d$e to greater mass! "hatCs
why it is easier to stop a tennis ball than a cricket ball moving with the same
speed!
3hy a goalkeeper in a game of football p$lls his hands backwards after holding
the ball shot at the goal!
Ans: "o red$ce the force e=erted by ball on hand by increasing time as F F :/t!
A passenger in a moving train tosses a coin which falls behind him! 3hy5
Ans: 9eca$se that motion of the train is accelerated!
0tate and e=plain the three laws of (ewton5
Ans: First law of motion: (ewtonCs First law e=plains the Knat$ralL motion of
an object when it is left free! "he law says that6 #very ob$ect continues in its
state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line with unchanging speed,
unless compelled to do otherwise by forces acting upon it!
0o; nat$rally an object at rest will remain at rest and an object moving with
a constant speed in a straight line will keep moving; $nless they are dist$rbed by
a force!
"his property of matter to contin$e its state of rest or of $niform motion is called
K:nertiaL! >ence; this law is also called the Daw of :nertia!
Second law of motion: (ewtonCs 2
nd
law of motion relates the e=ternal force %F&
acting on a body with the mass %m& of the bodyB and is mathematically written as
F F ma; IaC is the acceleration of the body d$e to the force! t states that the
acceleration of a body due to net e%ternal force acting on it is equal to the net
force divided by the mass of the body!
"he diMc$lty yo$ face while p$shing or p$lling a heavier bo= compared to a
lighter bo= is e=plained by the 2
nd
law of motion!
Third law of motion: "his law deals with the forces between bodies that appear
in pairs! t says that every action has an equal and opposite reaction! 3hen yo$
stand on the gro$nd; yo$r weight p$shes the gro$nd downwardsB does this
make the gro$nd to move downward5 (o; beca$se the gro$nd p$shes yo$
$pward with a force e#$al to yo$r weight and hence these e#$al

yo$ on the gro$nd and force on yo$ by the gro$nd are two e#$al
and opposite forces acting in pairs at the s$rface that is common to both yo$
