1 OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project are to:
(i) Develop your ability to take up a poorly defined problem and develop a viable mechanical
solution; and
(ii) Enhance your appreciation of the issues involved in practically applying engineering science
theory in mechanical engineering design.
2 GUIDELINES
Study the project brief below. Develop a solution through the engineering design process covered in
class. Consult the lecturer or assistant in the designated consulting times to discuss queries related
to the project. Your final report should contain the design specifications, concepts, a description of
the design which you selected, basic analyses to determine estimates of sizes of components, an
estimated cost analysis for the production of a prototype, and a full assembly drawing and
component drawings done on Solidworks.
3 PROJECT BRIEFS
3.1 Design a Clothes Hanging Rack for an Executive Business Jet
It is standard practice in executive business jets to have designated areas for clothes hanging racks.
Depending on the size of the aircraft, one or more racks can be accommodated, but they must be
compact and lightweight. The rack must also be safe and easy to use, and must retain the clothes
hanging on it during flight.
Thus, the clothes hanging rack that you must design:
- must enable the installation of multiple racks (in different locations or together) in an aircraft;
- must enable a clothes hanging volume of length = 600 mm, height = 1200 mm and width = 550
mm;
- must be capable of carrying a load of 30 kg;
- must be compact, lightweight and capable of being mounted on the aircraft cabin floor;
- must be covered with a flexible cover that can be easily opened and closed;
- must ensure that clothes hanging on the rack stay on the rack during all phases of flight, including
during turbulence (standard off-the-shelf hangers must be accommodated since passengers could
bring their clothes on their own hangers);
- must use materials that comply with aviation regulations; and
- must comply with aviation design regulations for cabin equipment.
The following images show two random examples of commercial racks to stimulate your
brainstorming processes.
