1 Place the soldering iron in a location where you will not have to reach across
it, and when soldering under the microscope, always be aware of the position
of your free hand relative to the bit.

2 When unsoldering a wire, make certain that no spring tension is contained
within the wire.

3 Plug the soldering iron into the correct supply socket, keeping the socket free
from loose strands of discarded wire.

4 Avoid breathing flux fumes and use appropriate fume extraction.

5 When cutting wires, apply and shield the cutters correctly so as to limit the
ejection of wire clippings beyond your personal workspace.

6 Disconnect all electrical equipment before working on a chassis.

7 Ensure that flat-blade screwdrivers are in good condition and the blade size is
correct for the screw being tightened.

8 Always connect airline hoses to the nearest point; keep hose away from
walkways.

9 When using compressed gasses make certain that the gasses are directed
away from the face and away from other persons.

10 Be aware of any under-bench projections such as vice clamps, which could
cause thigh injury.

11 When working with solvents keep the minimum amount on the workplace, and
avoid breathing the fumes. Always store the bulk stock correctly in a safe
container.

12 Safety glasses should be worn when wire cutting, soldering or solvent cleaning,
particularly if it is performed overhead. Careless priming of pump-type solvent
containers, can result in solvent spraying outwards.

13 Safety glasses should be worn when using the solder pots.

14 Know how to contact a first aider and know where there is an eye wash or
running water.

15 Personnel working in the solder area should wear low-heeled shoes with closed
toes and heels. Other recommended apparel includes hair nets for persons with
long hair, and trousers or coveralls to protect the legs. Loose clothing is
dangerous around moving machinery.

16 Avoid startling anyone using a soldering iron or other hazardous equipment.

17 Lift the soldering iron, whether hot or cold, only by the handle.

18 Keep the soldering iron in its holder when not actually in use.

19 Wipe excess solder off the iron tip, never flick it off.

20 Take care when using scalpels and other sharp instruments. When finished with
the scalpel, do not place it in a general-use toolbox where it could cut someone
unaware of its presence. Return it to the instructor for safe storage. Return used
sharps to the instructor for safe disposal.

21 Microscope eyepieces and shields can be cleaned using optical wipes or a lens
cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

22 Continuous ringing of the fire bell indicates that all personnel should evacuate the
room by the nearest stairwell. Do not use the lift. Evacuees should congregate in
the Anglesea/Burnaby car park at the Burnaby road side of Anglesea building.

23 For ESD or any other reason, personnel should never be connected directly to
"hard" ground.
Residual current circuit breakers (RCDs or ELCBs should be employed where
appropriate.
