REVIEW – REPORT

• Page 104 - Fig. 4.1(b) – instead of T-N diagram, it should be T-S diagram.
• Page 104 - (d) – work done during the process-Since there are two processes
shown in fig. 4.1, the second line should be – work done can be obtained either
from the area under the curve on the p-v diagram or mathematically as………
[area under T-S diagram does not give work done during the process therefore it
is appropriate to clarify as above].
• Page 104 – example 4.1 – Solution should be supported by a figure of the process
to clarify to the students states P1, T1, P2, T2.
• Page 105 – example 4.2 – Given a constant temperature and constant volume
process – incorrect – it is not a constant temperature process. Temperature of
nitrogen increases during the process.
• Page 119 – example 4.14 – Terms like stroke & clearance volume have been used.
If they are not explained in earlier chapters, a brief note is required.
• Page 121 – example 4.16 – calculation on RHS should read
122.146 = 90 x {(9.81) x (1.5) + (1/2) x (V2)}, the last bracket is missing. Also the
equation is not balanced in units. On the LHS we have Kilojoules – on the RHS
we have Joules. Hence the calculation of velocity in the answer is incorrect.
• Page 125 – figure 4.20 – (i) State 1 is not marked in the figure. (ii) Linear law
p=aV+C – units of p and V should be stated in the problem itself –viz- p is in
KPa and V in m3.
• Page 130 – example 4.25 – to calculate thermal efficiency. Is this covered in any
preceding chapter? if not, it should be explained before the problem.
• Page 130 – example 4.26 – Is Carnot cycle covered earlier?
• Page 133 – example 4.29 – External work has been asked. Is the term external
work of evaporation for steam covered earlier?
• Page 140-141 – Review questions – Q.no.4 difference between E & U - not
covered in the contents of this chapter. Similarly Q.no.8 is not covered.
• Page 144-145 – Objective questions – Q.no.5 onwards – not covered in the
content of this chapter.
In my opinion review and objective questions should be asked after the chapters
covering related concepts and explanations.
• Page 188 - High grade – Low grade energy – explanation inadequate.
• Page 188-189 – The term heat capacity should have been clarified.
• Page 189 – Difference between Mechanical cycle and Thermodynamic cycle – a
better explanation expected.
• Page 189 – paragraph above equation 6.1 – The last sentence should read…..from
the difference between heat supply and heat rejection OR difference between heat
supplied and heat rejected.
• Page 190 – article 6.4 – Refrigerator – deference between capillary, throttle valve,
expansion valve needs inclusion.
• Page 192 – article 6.6.3 – Violation of Kelvin leads to violation of Clausius has
been covered but how violation of Clausius leads to violation of Kelvin is not
explained although both are equally significant.
• Page 191 – article 6.6 – Kelvin-Planck statement – single temperature reservoir –
this seems somewhat incorrect. It should be either constant temperature reservoir
OR fixed temperature reservoir OR single thermal reservoir.
• Page 192 – article 6.7 – first Para – language incorrect – It should be – A heat
engine is PMM2 if it absorbs heat…………………
• Page 196 – article 6.11 – The 4th line says – The cycle undergoes the same path
and processes, only their directions are reversed. It could be modified – It is
understood that path and processes are same because it is a reversible cycle.
Therefore it is better to say like this - it is a reversible cycle. When reversed its
magnitude remains same – only directions are reversed.
• Page 205 – example 6.12 – mistake in calculation of Win - it should be
Win = Win /∆t = 20447.6 / 36000 and not 20447.6 / 3600 as given.
• Page 205 – example 6.13 - tonne of refrigeration used in problems but is not
defined anywhere in the chapter.
• Page 228 – example 7.1 – analysis 2 – It says – The reversible efficiency of a heat
engine … – There is nothing like reversible or irreversible efficiency. Efficiency
is simply efficiency. The sentence should read - The efficiency of a reversible
heat engine………..
• Page 228 – example 7.2 – solution incorrect. Equation no. (i) is wrong. It should
read Q1 + Q2 + Q3 = W, (unless W is equal to zero, which is not possible for the
given heat engine and the respective fig.7.5).
• Page 229 – article 7.5 – first Para – last line – fig 7.5 should be fig.7.6.
• Page 234 – article 7.10 – Entropy Generation – Fig. no. mentioned is 7.8. It
should be fig. no. 7.10
• Page 235 – notations mi. me, Q and Q’ need clarification.
• Page 235 – article 7.12 – In the statement fig. 7.9 should be fig.7.11. Also fig.7.10
should be fig.7.12.
• Page 229 / 236 – In article 7.5, relations for air are given but these relations are
derived in article 7.13 on page 236. It is done, probably, to solve the problem on
page 230. Either this part of the problem should be covered later or some
reference about derivation should be given on page 230 itself. This can be done
since both pages belong to the same chapter.
• Page 243 – example 7.18 – assumptions may be mentioned in the example itself.
• Page 276 – Introduction – 2nd line – Incorrect – It should read – Some of these are
measured experimentally and the remaining are calculated using thermodynamic
relations. – Next sentence i.e. In order……………………………are required,
should then be deleted.
• Page 276 – article 9.2 – Principal exact Differentials – matter missing.
• Page 285 – article 9.9 – RHS – 1st Para 4th line – correction - downstream
pressures P2, P2’, P2”, etc.
• Page 285 – article 9.9 – 2nd Para – 8th line – instead of through a maximum point,
it should be through a maximum temperature point.
• Page 293 – example 9.11 is based on Vanderwall’s equation which is not covered
in the contents of this chapter. Similarly problems 5, 6 and 12 on pages 295 & 296
are based on the same equation.
• Page 332 – Introduction –3rd Para - 1st line – should read – Two principal types of
engines are used rotary and reciprocating.
• Page 333 – equation (11.3) should be r = Vmax / Vmin = V1/ V2
• Page 333 – mean effective pressure should be pm and not pm.
• Page 339 – example 11.3 – analysis – rg-1 should be rγ-1.
In many diagrams of this chapter g is used instead of γ which is incorrect because g
is a universally accepted notation for gravitational acceleration.
• Page 345 – example 11.11 – cycle not drawn instead??????? given.
• Page 348 – example 11.14 - Cycle on P-V diagram should be drawn in the
solution.
• Page 349 – example 11.17 – again no cycle drawn.
• Page 368 – article 11.9.1- Equation reference (11.20) is incorrect. It should be
(11.25).
• Page 368 – article 11.9.2 – 1st line should be – From fig. 11.40. Also it should
read – the amount of heat supplied increases by an area 2-2’-3’-3-2. There is an
increase in work done also.
Area 2-2’-3’-3-2 is shown on T-S diagram and area on this diagram gives the value
of only heat not work. Hence the sentences should be separated as above.
• Page 368 – last Para – the pressure ratio should be r p2 > rp1 since there is no rp in
the fig. 11.41
In the entire book T-S diagrams are used even when they are not required in the
solution of examples. They may be avoided.
