Family, Friends and Supporters,

Walking home with mud all over my feet and ankles, and most of my body covered in
sweat, I realized how unimportant some things are. Living in Ecuador has taught me to not
sweat the small stuff. I find a dead cockroach on my floor and I just push it aside. Ive real-
ized that there are much bigger issues than how clean you are or the 10 ants that just
crawled across my sandwich. I watch the little boys get completely covered in mud as they
hurl mud balls at each other and I see that they are happy. Amidst all the uncertainties that
are in their lives, they find pure joy in just playing with their friends. I believe that these
children are going to teach me many more things than I might teach them in this short year.
For the first three weeks that I was here in my new home, I spent a lot of time acclimating
to the culture and the differences that come with it; the biggest one being the language. I
spent time in teacher meetings that were entirely in Spanish and felt very overwhelmed at
first. I slowly understand more and more as the days go on. Phrases and words are all
starting to mean more and more. Food is often different, also, but I love it already! I have
found a great place that serves a mean hamburger, so that helps, too. I love the Latin cul-
ture! There are eight other missionaries working here at Casa de Fe with me. They have
made me feel at home since the beginning and are becoming a second family.
During the first week of teacher in-
service, we went on a hike to water-
falls just 30 minutes from Shell. Often,
the trail turned into no trail, which
made it difficult, but we did it! The
waterfalls were beautiful! Its crazy
to think about all the things that God
has created and how beautiful they
are. It was great to see such a beauti-
ful sight after all the hard work to get
there. Afterwards we had almuerzo,
which is lunch that usually consists of
some type of meat, rice, and a small
salad. It was a great day and a great
way to get to know the other teachers
a little bit better. They are very under-
standing when I dont know what
they are saying. They are also very
eager to learn a bit of English.

School started on September 1. I am teaching the oldest English class, all music classes, and the youngest English
class. Ill also help keep the library in order and running smoothly. I have big challenges ahead of me but Im so ex-
cited to get to know each and every child. Their faces lit up when I told them that Id be here for the whole year. I
work with three other English teachers and ten Ecuadorean teachers. We have just under
40 students, total.
I cant believe that Ive been here for a month already! Thank you so much for your sup-
