The programme Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics (M. Eng.) consists mainly of elective modules. Only the masters thesis is an obligatory module. Applicants submit their individual choice of modules in their application form. Other documents like attested degree certificates, transcripts, curriculum vitae, letter of motivation and language certificates make up the application. The Evaluation Committee reviews all applications and draws up a ranking list and informs the applicants approx. 14 days after the deadline for admission. The choice of modules is binding. If possible at all, sub- sequent changes are subject to available capacity.
Application form Applicants submit their individual module choice on the application form. The information should always be given for three semesters in advance. Full-time students can thus define their complete programme in advance. Under normal circumstances they can be sure that the offered modules will take place. In the course of time however, the offer of modules may change. The university does not fix the modules more than three semesters ahead. Part-time students should also describe their individual choice and priority list three semesters in advance; the rest of the modules will then be fixed at a later stage. The detailed module description (www.fh-kl.de/master-ME-MT) allows a well-founded choice. The lan- guage of instruction follows the language of the module name: Product development is hence offered in English whereas Prozessentwicklung is offered in German. Pop-down-menus in the application form represent all available modules. For example, the menu reveals that writing the masters thesis is permitted during the second semester already. This flexibility enables choosing more than three modules from the same semester (i. e. summer or winter semester). Further- more the pop-down menus show that a mobility module cannot be chosen in the first semester. The first semester must always be completed in Kaiserslautern.
Evaluation of the applications The evaluation procedure is defined as follows. There are four criteria: Scientific qualification (degree, specialisation, marks etc. If your Transcript of Records does not contain an average mark, please calculate a weighted average mark (based on the size of the modules) yourself and submit it in your application form) Personal qualification: curriculum vitae (relevant personal information and details on activi- ties/responsibilities before, during or - if applicable - after your studies) Personal qualification: letter of motivation (short but meaningful, credible, personal) Linguistic proficiency (certificates of approved language tests)
In general it is important to deliver a logical, meaningful and complete application. A pre-evaluation with respect to quality or completeness is not performed. The assessment can render a maximum of 17 points. Applicants that are valued with less than 9 points in total or with 0 points in one of the four categories are rejected.
Linguistic Proficiency As the number of applicants from outside Germany has grown to incredible numbers totally unrealistic in terms of capacity - we have adopted a general requirement that ALL international applicants must give proof of German proficiency of at least Goethe Zertifikat Deutsch B1. As the immigration rules in Ger- many have become quite friendly to German graduates in the past few years, we believe to thus support the employability of our graduates successfully. The Goethe Zertifikat Deutsch B1 does not yet allow to choose German-taught courses from the start at our university (as we require Goethe Zertifikat Deutsch B2 or equivalent), but we train and encourage candidates coming in with B1 to achieve B2 before the start of the second semester and choose German- taught courses if desired.
Admission The admission letter contains the modules for which you have been admitted.
R&D- and mobility modules The R&D- and mobility modules are tailored to individual requirements. They need approval of the Exam- ination Board that normally meets shortly after the start of the semester. Hence, at the time of applica- tion the modules cannot be guaranteed. If R&D- and mobility modules are chosen it is hence required to select an alternative module.
Masters thesis Writing the masters thesis can start after having successfully finished 30 ECTS. Hence part-time students cannot plan their masters thesis in the second semester already.
Job Opportunities By experience, this information is especially meant for foreign students. Before applying to this pro- gramme you have to be aware that life in Germany costs at least around 700 per month. Job opportuni- ties during the studies are negligible. So, at the start of your studies you must have resources of approxi- mately 18 x 700 =12,600 available, even if the Immigration Authorities only ask you to give proof of about a years expenses. As studies are generally free of charge in Germany there are not many scholarships available. Those that become one will of course enjoy that. At the time of application or registration it is however totally unre- alistic to plan that you will receive one.
