A NOVEL SMART BILLING SYSTEM FOR
ENERGY CONSUMPTION THROUGH WIRELESS NETWORK
Stream: Electrical Engineering
INTRODUCTION
The advantages of remote meter reading and spot billing are well recognized by the
various electricity boards in the country today. Not only does spot billing lead to much
greater revenue-collection efficiency and better decision systems, it also brings intangibles
like transparency and better customer service to the system. Though there exist various
devices in the market that aid in spot-meter billing, none has become either an industry
standard or widely prevalent. The reasons range from limited computing power and lack of
customizability to high price and absence of local technical support.
Remote electricity billing is a unique concept, in which the electricity board can
collect the consumed units data from consumer on mobile phone using GSM network. Each
consumer is provided with a unique energy meter, which is having a GSM modem,
microcontroller unit and a display unit internally. A SIM card is required for communication.
Whenever this system receives an SMS from electricity board, it calculates the number of
units consumed and billing amount on slab rate, displays on LCD for user interface. This
system also sends the same message to the electricity board for departmental information and
database.
The unique feature of this system is, the electricity board can disconnect or reconnect
the connection from remote place through the mobile phone. As this project works on GSM
network, the system can be controlled from any part of the world.
ABSTRACT
Our Project aims at creating a smarter way of energy consumption and billing system.
We are realizing this idea using networked energy meter grid. Our idea is to create a network
of consumer energy meters that connect to a centralized server at the regional electricity
board using WLAN/Radio transmission and reception. Using this project on a large scale it is
possible to identify higher power consumption regions in the entire power grid and hence
possible to distribute power in a smarter way. As the meter communicates with the server
continuously it is possible for the person at EB to monitor energy consumption in real time as
well as to check the meter for faults and take corrective measure without consumer
intervention. This project is tamper proof as it communicates with EB server in real time.

DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM
In India we are stuck to the ancient manual billing system carried by the various
electricity boards. Such billing system has many faults. For every area a person is appointed
to check the meter readings by going door to door. This process is too time consuming and
due to some unavoidable reasons people dont get the bill on time. Even at the time of meter
fault due to technical problems general public has to suffer.
OBJECTIVES
Using this project on a large scale it is possible to identify higher power consumption
regions in the entire power grid and hence possible to distribute power in a smarter way. It is
possible for the person at EB to monitor energy consumption in real time as well as to check
the meter for faults and take corrective measure without consumer intervention. Manual
Work load can be avoided. This method gives the route to analyses the power demand on
time to time and monitor peak hours of power utilization.
METHODOLOGY
The electricity that is consumed by the consumers is calculated in digital electronic
meter and is converted to radio wave forms and then fed to the server at the EB through radio
transmission or WLAN. From the EB the bill is transferred through the same path to the
consumers and the amount is printed by a small printing unit implemented in the meter unit.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Circuit Diagram of Proposed Smart Billing System

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM EXPLANATION
The led pulse from the meter is connected to the microcontroller, which counts the
pulses and stores it into its EEPROM. The stored units are displayed to the user through a
LCD display. The two microcontrollers communicates with each other continuously. The first
microcontroller does all the displaying and calculation of units and sends the units to the
second microcontroller. The second microcontroller sends the calculated units through the
GSM modem network to the server at EB side when a unit request is send to the meter via the
same channel from server. The software at the EB server can calculate the amount and send
the bill to the consumers registered mobile number.
This proposal also comes bundled with power demand management. The circuit splits
the main line into two separate lines (low power line & high power line) managed using two
separate relay. These relays are run using the relay driver IC ULN2003 which is controlled by
the microcontrollers. During the peak hours the EB can send a signal that can cut off the
supply to the high power lines while maintaining the supply to the low power lines thus all
the heavy equipment can be shut down to manage the power demand. When the peak time is
over the EB can reactivate the high power lines remotely by sending the enable signal.
In the event of non-payment of the bill, the EB can send a cut-off signal that will cut
the power supply of all the line to a particular user. The supply can then be re-enabled
without any hustle upon bill payment.
ACCOMPLISHED WORK
In this system we are using electronic digital energy meter. The digital energy meter
is inbuilt with a printer and a wireless adapter. We have to note the Mac address and the
consumers name once in record after that every aspect of billing rating is automized. A
wireless router is installed at every region .Each router is connected to the server at the
electricity board. So every single consumer which are connected to that regional rotor will be
available in the regional electricity board server.

OUTCOME
The outcome from proposed work will be certainly revolutionary in the energy
consuming sector. With the launch of such automized system manual error and over tiring
work load can be minimized. Using this system its easier for electricity board to analyses
which region the energy consumption is more and where are the unauthorized consumers.
Thus by using this concept the whole system of power sector is going to be benefitted as
installation cost is very low and it is highly efficient.
ACHIEVEMENTS
An economical prototype of our concept has been developed, in which wireless
communication is based on GSM standard. Bill generation software has been programmed
using Java, interfaced to a MySQL database server. Successful implementation and
demonstration of the project has made it possible to be implemented on a large scale in
industrial areas and urban cities.
