Business Bootcamp 2014
As part of the Outdoor Tourism Project, Conwy County Borough Council is proud to
present 2 weeks of FREE tourism business training this Autumn 2014. Our focus is on
everything outdoors but as youll see from our timetable, there are courses to suit anyone
involved in welcoming visitors to the area.

Whats hot in Mobile Tourism?
Andrew Lloyd Hughes, TruTourism
This half day seminar will investigate whats hot in the world of mobile tourism at the
moment and highlight a number of exciting, innovative and easy to use smartphone and
tablet applications. During the session, we will share a number of inspiring best practice
examples from around the world and explore how tourism businesses in North Wales
can exploit these opportunities free of charge to impress customers and enhance the
visitors experience. This session will generate fresh business ideas and help improve
your knowledge in a rapidly evolving and developing area of tourism.
Equipment: Tablets and smartphones optional.
Presenter Prole: Andrew Lloyd Hughes is a highly experienced digital tourism
consultant based in Wales who specialises in the application of mobile technology in
travel and tourism. A former post graduate tourism lecturer who has gained an excellent
reputation in Welsh tourism, Andrew possesses a Masters Degree in Tourism and over
20 years experience working in the industry in the UK and overseas. After a successful
career in the public sector, he set up TruTourism Consultancy in 2008 and now also
works as an associate for international digital tourism specialists TEAM, who he joined
in 2011.

social media platforms, your website, and we will get you using videos for cutting edge
online promotion. We have two guest speakers lined up for you, one from a top digital
agency and a guest appearance from a Digital video specialist for discussions on up
and coming technology including practical sessions on making the best of your promo
material. We are not going back, technology is only moving forward. Join us!

Presenter Prole: Shelly Barratt is the Director of Coya Marketing a full service
communications consultancy based in North Wales and Chester. She is also the
Director of The Real Ale Trail Company. She has been marketing companies for over
14 years in the leisure industry and works with Welsh SMEs and Councils across North
Wales.

Diversity is good for business
Arwel Jones & Ian Baker, Catalys
The Outdoor Tourism Project has developed a unique course that puts diversity and
inclusion at the heart of the sector. Outdoor tourism has huge potential to provide
positive, life enhancing opportunities for people from all walks of life and for all abilities.
This course will look at the experiences of outdoor tourism from the perspective of
those who face constraints in their ability to engage and will also consider your wider
goals as well as market potential.
You will take part in exercises during the day that focus specically on your business and
activities. Following the course youll be provided with a full set of course materials and
post-course support in order to develop new business ideas.
Presenter Proles: Arwel Jones is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Environment,
Natural Resources and Geography and a Founder Member of the Welsh Responsible
Tourism Group at the Welsh Institute for Natural Resources, Bangor University. He
wrote the Gwynedd Destination Management Plan, with a strong emphasis on the
outdoor tourism offer in Snowdonia and recently worked as project consultant in the
Dee Valley extension of the Clwydian Range AONB. He was director of the Festival of
the Countryside for 15 years, a multi-agency sustainable tourism initiative operating
throughout rural Wales.

Ian Baker is Director of Catalys consulting who provided the equality impact assessment
for the Outdoor Tourism Project. Arwel and Ian work together in Catalys and have
produced evaluation and impact assessment throughout the UK. Ian has worked at
all levels of government in the UK, including responsibility for rural tourism at Defra,
Recreation planning in South Wales and equalities and diversity at Telford and Wrekin
Council. An experienced trainer, Ian has designed and delivered participative training
for a number of national and international bodies. Ian is passionate about how all
organisations can innovate from within, and the course is designed to stimulate creative
thinking and positive change.

Catherine Miles, Snowdonia-Active
Conwy is a great destination for outdoor activities but where do your guests disappear
off to for their days in the outdoors? Todays familiarisation visit will answer just that. An
excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge of the activity products available in the
area, meet other like-minded local businesses, gain a thorough knowledge of whats on
offer outdoors in Conwy and consequently be able to offer an improved service to your
customers. Well visit popular outdoor activity attractions and various outdoor activity
hotspots, meet local business owners and end the day with an optional taster session at
the Llandudno Ski Slope and Snowboard centre.
Equipment: We recommend you wear sensible outdoor clothes and comfortable
foot wear. Waterproofs will also be needed as well be spending a lot of time outdoors.
Presenter Prole: Snowdonia-Active is a social enterprise and creative consultancy
whose aim is to support and develop the outdoor sector in North Wales. Catherine
Miles has has been involved in a number of Snowdonia-Active projects with her primary
focus being on the North Wales Environmental Charter which operates to ensure the
sustainable growth of the outdoor sector. In addition to her work with Snowdonia-
Active, Catherine manages North Wales Active, a local, independent outdoor activity
business.

Marketing Authentic Tourism Experiences
Dr Xavier Font
This course will make you see sustainability differently. We will help you stop writing
jargon and start thinking about the aspects of sustainability that are relevant to your
customers enjoyment the real experiences they look for and help you communicate
just that! As part of the session we will work together to develop a plan for your company
to prepare meaningful messages, relevant to the decisions your customer needs to
make, that will help reassure them you are the right company for them.
The session will cover why your current sustainability messages make little impact on
your customers and how integrating sustainability in your company strategy will give you
more meaningful, customer-focused results. Youll have time to debate, reect on your
current practices and draft your sustainability marketing and communication plan.
Presenter Prole: Dr Xavier Font is the director of Respondeco, the responsible tourism
communication consultancy at Leeds Metropolitan University, and co-director of
the International Centre for Responsible Tourism. He conducts training workshops
and website reviews on how to use sustainability, authenticity and sense of place as a
marketing opportunity for small rms. His simple vision is to help sustainable tourism
small rms around the world be more competitive and protable.

This half-day course will give you an opportunity to gather and prepare wild foods. It
will give you condence to identify wild plants and to learn about their benets both
culinary and medicinally. Wild edible plants are often viewed with a cautious eye and
overlooked as a food resource. Through this workshop we will learn how tasty and full of
important nutrients and energy these plants can be.
Presenter Prole: Jim Langley runs Natures Work, an education consultancy promoting
outdoor learning through innovative educational courses and training events throughout
the UK. He is also an approved provider for the Institute of Outdoor Learning and runs
professional development workshops through Mountain Training Association. Natures
Work brings to life the natural world through a range of wildlife walks, educational
courses and training events.
Equipment: We recommend you wear sensible outdoor clothes and comfortable

Making the most of Afon Ddu.
Understanding Biodiversity and how to
minimise impact.

Workshop accredited by Mountain Training Association (MTA) and Association of
Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) - 1/2 a CPD credit will be awarded to those who
attend the workshop and are registered with MTA and/or AMI.

This workshop is specically for gorge walking instructors. Afon Ddu marks the
southern edge of the Coed Dolgarrog National Nature Reserve which is designated as a
Site of Special Scientic Interest for broadleaved woodland. The gorge itself is home to a
number of rare species such as Wilsons lmy fern, globeower, water avens and beech
fern. It is also one of the most popular venues in Wales for carrying out gorge walking,
bringing an estimated 1.5 million to the local economy each year. Lead by ecologist Rod

Gritten, this interactive workshop will look at how we can achieve a balance of recreation
and conservation within the Afon Ddu gorge. Rod will guide us through sections of the
gorge highlighting rare species whilst discussing how to minimise environmental impact,
knowledge which can be passed on to clients. This workshop offers an ideal opportunity
to explore how sensitive management of a protected environment can balance
demands for a high quality visitor experience.
Take away resources created by Snowdonia-Active as part of their reconciling
conservation and recreation series will be available to participants.
Equipment: This will be a wet session own personal protective equipment required.
Presenter Prole: Dr Rod Gritten was the Senior Ecologist for Snowdonia National Park
for many years until he left in 2008 to set up his own ecological consultancy, Gritten
Ecology. Since closer monitoring of the Afon Ddu began, Rod has written two ecological
surveys on the Afon Ddu where the latter indicated that despite the estimated high
volume of usage in the gorge, its diverse ora remains remarkably intact suggesting that
the group leaders are treating the gorge with respect and brieng their clients effectively.

Top Tips for Running a Sustainable
Tourism Premises

Want to improve the environmental and economic sustainability of your operation?
This workshop is aimed at tourism businesses with premises. The session will focus on
practical, easy to implement actions which will reduce both the environmental impact
of your business, and your overheads. Topics covered will include how to understand
and improve energy and water efciency, as well as environmentally friendly cleaning,
waste management and low energy lighting. We will consider how you can market
such improvements to your guests, using the lesson learnt in Xavier Fonts workshop
Marketing Authentic Tourism Experiences on 25th September. You do not need to
attend Dr Fonts workshop to attend this session.
The workshop will be informal, enabling you to ask questions pertinent to your
operation and premises.
Presenter Prole: Dr Emma Edwards-Jones coordinates Green Snowdonia for
Snowdonia-Active. Green Snowdonia is a business network that supports and
promotes the adoption of sustainable practices by the tourism industry. Emma has 20
years experience, as project manager, academic and consultant in the environmental
sector. Particular areas of interest include stimulating behavioural change towards
sustainability in industry and society.

Networking Evening with guest speaker

Tristan Gooley
To celebrate our fortnight of excellent training opportunities in Conwy wed like to invite
you to attend an informal networking evening at the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre. The
evening will be a great opportunity to learn more about what is happening in Destination
Conwy, socialise with other tourism businesses and enjoy a locally sourced buffet and
after dinner talk by the Natural Navigator Tristan Gooley.
Tristan Gooley is a writer, navigator and explorer. Tristan has led expeditions in ve
continents, climbed mountains in Europe, Africa and Asia, sailed small boats across
oceans and piloted small aircraft to Africa and the Arctic. He has walked with and studied
the methods of the Tuareg, Bedouin and Dayak in some of the remotest regions on
Earth. Tristan has appeared on TV and radio programmes in the UK and internationally,
and is regularly invited to present worldwide, having just completed the festival circuit
this summer. Tristan draws on two decades of pioneering outdoors experience to offer
