Catastrophic Risks.
7. Nick Bostrom comments that it is important to attempt (as best we can)
to distinguish futuristic scenarios put forward for their symbolic signicance or
entertainment value from speculations that are meant to be evaluated on the basis
of literal plausibility. Only the latter form of realistic futuristic thought will be
considered in this paper. See Bostrom, Future of Humanity, also published in
Olsen, Selinger, and Riis, New Waves in Philosophy, 2. Such an approach effectively
wipes out cultural history in one fell swoop, and in the manner akin to his
Oxford colleague Richard Dawkins, he dismisses religion as in the same category
with science ction. Like Dawkins, he is trying to convince his readers that his
speculations are based or grounded in hard science.
8. Olsen, Selinger, and Riis, New Waves, 5.
9. Harris uses a similar argument to argue his case for transhumanism in
Enhancing Evolution, 1213.
10. Bostrom, Future of Humanity, 16. He discusses a swath of other possible
methods of cognitive enhancements, some in use, and some more speculative; see
Bostrom and Sandberg, Cognitive Enhancement.
11. It is worth noting that Bostrom has worked with physicists and cosmologists,
and his understanding that this is possible according to physical laws seems to be
broadly correct. See, e.g., Bostrom and
