It was the best birthday gift that Edmond received from his wife. It was the gift of life.
Edmond suffered kidney failure. He had to start kidney dialysis treatment. Poor man, he had to
go for dialysis treatment four times a week.
Seeing him so fragile and pale, his wife, Eve, did not know what to do. She was sad that
her husband had to suffer so much. One day, she went to see the doctor in-charge of Edmonds
sickness. She asked the doctor whether it was possible for her to donate one of her kidneys to her
husband. The doctor looked at her and said, It can be done but are you very sure that you want
to go ahead with it?
Hes my husband. I love him very much. I cant see him suffer every day. If only I could
save him, replied Eve. Soon, Eve was going for tests, counselling sessions and mental checks.
She did all these without Edmonds knowledge. She didnt want him to object to her decision.
Six months later, Edmond went for a kidney transplant. He felt good soon after. He told
the doctor that he wanted to know who the donor was. The doctor only said, You will know
soon.
After a few days at the hospital, a nurse brought Eve to see Edmond. Tears of joy rolled
down her cheeks when she saw her husband able to eat and walk. The doctor who was at the
ward turned to Edmond and said, She is your saviour.
Edmond was speechless. He least expected his wife to do it without his knowledge.
Anyway, he hugged her and cried. His eyes were moist with tears of joy. The nurse and the
doctor left the room. The happy couple looked at each other and hugged again.
