Assignment 2 comprises of Questions 1, 2, 4 and 7

Students are encouraged to practice on the remaining questions. Note that you may
submit this assignment as hardcopy in the assignment box or you may prefer to
submit it in digital form on LMS. Either way you choose, make sure that the
assignment has a cover sheet and is submitted prior to the date/time mentioned
above.

Question 1
(a) In a road construction project a contractor is required to compact sandy material in a confined
area. What types of compactors would you think is most suitable?

(b) List principal methods of ground modifications and soil stabilization.

(c) A ditch having a cross sectional area of 4.6 m
2
is being excavated in common earth. The soils
angle of repose is 35 and its swell is 25%. Find the height and width of the triangular soil bank
that will result from the trench excavation.

(a) What are the main objectives of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004
(b) What are the main duties of the employer and employee stated in the Occupational Health and
Safety Act 2004?
(c) What is an Improvement Notice?
(d) What is a Prohibition Notice?


Question 3
Explain advantages and disadvantages of construction employing owner construction team and
construction employing a design/built team.


Question 4
A soil weighs 1163 kg/LCM, 1661 kg/BCM and 2077 kg/CCM.
(a) Find the load factor and shrinkage factor for the soil.
(b) How many bank cubic meters (BCM) and compacted cubic meters (CCM) are contained in
593,300 LCM of this soil?


Question 5
Find the base diameter and height of a conical spoil bank that will contain 76.5 BCM of excavation
if the soils angle of repose is 32 and its swell is 12 %.

Question 6
Local Shire is planning to implement two projects. Details of the two projects are as follows:
Project A Construction of a Picnic Area
Implementation cost $200,000
Annual maintenance cost $3000/year
Major overhaul at the end of year 10 $20,000
Expected revenue $800/year after year 1
Useful life of the project 20 years

Project B Construction of a road
Initial cost $300,000
Annual maintenance cost 1500/year
Useful life of the project 10 years
Interest rate 5%

Due to limited funding only one project can be implemented. If you are the Shire Engineer which
project would you recommend.


Question 7
Given the information below on a shovel/truck operation:

Shovel production at 100% efficiency =283 BCM/hr
J ob efficiency =0.75
Truck capacity =15.3 BCM
Truck cycle time (excluding loading) =0.5hr,

Calculate the following:
(a) The number of trucks theoretically required and the production of this combination;
(b) The expected production if two trucks are removed from the fleet.

A rectangular ditch having a cross sectional area 2.2 m

is being excavated in clay. The soils
angle of repose is 35 and its swell is 30 %. Find the height and width of the triangular spoil bank
that will result from the trench excavation.
