A three-phase full-bride SCR rectifier shown in Figure 1 is used to power the
inductive load. The load inductance is very large. The AC input voltage V is 400 V
(50 Hz). The DC output power is 10.5 kW and the load resistance is 5 Q. Answer the
following questions.
(a) Find the firing angle a
(b) Calculate the rms value of fundamental component in the input current
(c) Find the power factor (PF) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of input
current.

QUESTION 4
(a)Consider a cascaded converter-inverter system in Figure 3. The converter is a
buck type with the specifications as follows;

The inverter is a single-phase inverter with R-L load in series. The values of R
and L load is 5 Q and 10 niH respectively.
(i) Calculate the output voltage of buck converter, V 0 1 .
(ii) If the inverter switches is fed to their gates by a square wave signals (i.e
square wave inverter), with frequency of 50 Hz, calculate the
fundamental output power of the inverter.
(iii) Compute the total harmonic distortion of the output current, by
considering ONLY the first-three nonzero harmonics.

The DC motor has many disadvantages such as generate heat, dangerous due
to sparking and etc. However, DC motors are still significant to the everyday
life. Justify why the DC motors still important.

A six-pole, three-phase, 50 Hz induction machine, 1460 rpm has a rated torque
of 20 N.m. It is used to drive a load with characteristics given by TL
= Kw2,
such that the speed equals rated value at rated torque. If a constant V/Hz
control method is used, find the speed of motor and the running frequency at
0.86 rated torque.
