GOAL
To decrease newborn mortality & morbidity
via protection of breastfeeding and the
establishment of a human milk bank.
OBJECTIVE
To protect each mother and infant dyad by
supporting breastfeeding and providing
human milk as the unequalled source of
immunoprotection and nutrition for sick
premature and full term newborns even
if they are separated from their mothers.
Why a human milk bank
in a hospital?
Human milk has
NO SUBSTITUTE.
 It has immunoprotective properties against
life threatening infections like sepsis,
pneumonia, diarrhea and enterocolitis.
 It has components which mature the
newborn’s intestinal tract allowing easy
digestion, better absorption, faster growth
and better health.
 It has nutrients, the combination of which
no artificial product can duplicate.
Human milk is
ESSENTIAL for SURVIVAL.
Newborns separated from their
mothers due to illnesses are at
the highest risk for death.

possible for the
biological mother to
breastfeed, the first
alternative if available, should be the use
of human milk from other sources.
Human Milk Banks should be made
available in appropriate situations.”

HOW CAN I HELP?
A. BE A BREASTMILK DONOR
IF YOU ARE:
 currently a nursing mom
 willing to pledge to donate
at least 100 oz.
 in good health
 willing to undergo blood tests
 a non-smoker
 not taking medications chronically
(including over-the-counter medications,
and large doses of vitamins)
 able to refrain from alcohol at least 12
hours before sharing your milk
B. BE A FINANCIAL DONOR
Monetary donations for the information
dissemination, screening of milk donors,
maintenance of the milk bank operation and
research are also needed. Your generosity
will go a long way in keeping infants healthy.
C. BE A VOLUNTEER
We need volunteers for the lactation unit and the
human milk bank :
- to help disseminate information
- to help cup feed in-hospital babies
- to assist the lactation team in expression
of milk from the foster moms
