NEWS Carol Fest: Capturing

Melodies of the Holiday Cheer

The
 College
 of
 Science
 Carol
 Fest
 is
a
 yearly
project
 of
 the
 College
 of
 Science
 Student
 Council
 that
 showcases
the
 musical

talents
of
CS
students
and
celebrates
the
upcoming
Christmas
holiday.

This
 an<cipated
event
 was
held
 on
December
4,
2009,
a
 Friday
evening
in
 Abelardo
 Hall,
College
of
Music.
This
year’s
Carol



Fest
theme
is
Movies
with
the
<tle
“Christmas
in
Film:
Capturing
Melodies
of
the
Holiday
Cheer.”

A
total
of
eleven
different
College
of
Science
organiza<ons
par<cipated
 in
the
2009
Carol
Fest.
They
were
given
two
 standard



pieces
 ‐
 four‐voice
 arrangements
 of
 the
 well‐loved
 Filipino
 Christmas
 carols
 “Pasko
 Na
 Naman”
 and
 “Noche
 Buena”.
 In

addi<on,
each
organiza<on
had
to
perform
a
song
chosen
by
the
members
in
line
with
this
year’s
theme.

The
event
was
scheduled
to
begin
at
7
o’clock
in
the
evening.
Performers
assembled
in
Abelardo
Hall,
decked
out
 in
costumes

that
 ranged
 from
fes<ve
and
flamboyant
to
classic
 and
stylish.
In
addi<on
to
the
CS
students’
musical
prowess,
we
saw
their

talents
in
prop
making
and
choreography.

Performers
 were
 given
 a
 total
 stage
 <me
 of
 thirteen
 minutes.
 In
 those
 few
 minutes,
 the
 audience
 was
 treated
 to
 unique

interpreta<ons
of
 the
 two
 standard
 pieces
and
 wonderful
 rendi<ons
 of
the
chosen
 songs.
 In
 addi<on
 to
 the
 organiza<ons’

performances,
 there
 was
 an
 intermission
 number
 by
 the
 UP
 CS
 Chorale.
 Every
 seat
 in
 the
 theatre
 was
 filled
 with
 fellow

students
and
faculty,
eager
to
cheer
and
support
for
the
many
performers.

Par<cipants
were
judged
based
on
musical
criteria,
linguis<c
criteria,
crea<vity
and
overall
impact.
First
 Place
was
awarded
to

UP
 Pre‐medical
 Honors
 Society.
 Second
 Place
 was
 awarded
 to
 UP
 Math
 Club.
 There
 was
 a
 three‐way
<e
 for
 Third
 Place

between
UP
Associa<on
of
Biology
Majors,
UP
Geological
Society,
and
UP
Microbiology
and
Biotechnology
Society.
There
were

three
 special
 awards
 in
 addi<on
 to
 these.
The
 award
 for
 Best
 Costumes
 and
 Props
went
 to
 UP
 PMHS,
 the
 award
 for
 Best

Choreography
went
to
UP
ABM,
and
the
award
for
Voice
of
the
Night
went
to
the
soloist
tenor
of
the
UP
Math
Club.

Without
the
unwavering
dedica<on
of
the
College
of
Science
Student
Council,
the
enthusias<c
par<cipa<on
of
the
different
CS

organiza<ons,
and
the
endless
support
of
the
students
and
faculty,
the
Carol
Fest
wouldn’t
have
been
the
success
it
was.
From

prepara<on
to
execu<on,
prac<ce
to
performance,
and
start
and
finish.
The
CS
Carol
Fest
 indeed
ended
 on
an
incredibly
high

note.
