A few gallons of mis-

placed chlorine prompt-

ed the evacuation of
Lake Shore High School
Sept. 11.
The chemical was mis-
takenly dumped into the
wrong tank by workers
servicing the schools
pool.
On Thursday, Sept. 11,
after students were dis-
missed for the day, the
contracted pool company
came to deliver chemicals
into the pool mechanical
room (a room separate
from the pool area), Lake
Shore superintendent
Chris Loria said in a state-
ment. In doing so, the
contractor poured the
wrong chemical into a
tank causing a vapor.
This vapor prompted
the evacuation of the
building.
The fire department
and hazmat team was
called in, Loria said.
Through natural chem-
istry and time, the two
chemicals stopped creat-
ing the vapor. As a pre-
caution, Lake Shore did
contract a company to
remove the tank.
Hazmat crews cleaned
up the facility, conducted
multiple air and pool-wa-
ter quality tests following
the incident, Loria add-
ed.
The results of these test
cleared the way for the
school to reopen to stu-
dents and staff the next
day, causing no interrup-
tion to the students at all.
The Lake Shore fami-
ly would like to thank the
multiple emergency re-
sponse teams that assist-
ed throughout the eve-
ning and into the night to
make the building safe
for our students and
staff, Loria said.

Gas cloud forces
school evacuation
Its a distinct honor.
Its the culmination of,
in many cases, years of
work, dedication and at-
tention to detail.
Being selected by the
citys beautification
commission as the re-
c i pi ent of a
Beautification Award is
a rare honor.
Its individuals that
take time and put the ef-
fort in, Mayor Kip
Walby said. And they do
this to make their neigh-
borhoods and St. Clair
Shores better.
At the city councils
Monday, Sept. 15, meet-
ing, Walby, and along
with Councilman John
Caron, read formal
proclamations aimed at
officially recognizing

City votes

By John McTaggart

A 5-2 vote at its
last meeting offi-
cially approved the
citys membership
into the Macomb
County Chamber.
Several endors-
ers of the chamber
addressed the
council, explaining
the benefits of
membership and
the asset the orga-
nization could be
to the city.
As an organiza-
tion we are already
fulfilling our role to
support and pro-
vide services to St.
Cl ai r Shores,
Macomb County
Chamber CEO
Grace Shore said.
We are already
here. We have not
abandoned you.
We will not aban-
don you. I think
your vote shows
support of the busi-
ness community.
Several members
of the citys busi-
ness community
followed Shore and
sang the praises of
the chamber.
Jim Kaza of Sail
Time and Kathleen
Zenisek from First
State Bank spoke
of their support di-
rectly to council
members.
The Macomb
County Chamber
provides a real
benefit, Kaza said.
It enables you to
develop relation-
ships throughout
all of Macomb
County.
Perhaps theres
a business person
like me in Clinton
Townshi p who
wants to get into
St. Clair Shores
who doesnt know
how to do it,
Zenisek said. Its
the personal con-
nections that you
get from the cham-
ber that can help
that.
The council vot-
ed not to join the
Macomb County
Chamber in 2013.

up, Frederick said. I
think its time that we
step up and recognize
this chamber as our
chamber.
Mayor Kip Walby add-
ed to the support.
I do appreciate their
effort and what they do
for the community,
Walkby said.
They do a very good
job helping to promote
our businesses, Rubino
said. When we voted not
to become part of the
chamber, they did not
stop with their promotion
in helping our business-
es. That says a lot about
the organization. I was
for it then, and Im for it
now.
Councilman Chris
Vitale, who voted no, in
2013, explained his
change of heart.
I have seen the work
theyve done in the last
year, Vitale said. Ive
seen the value. So, Im re-
canting.
Vitale then introduced
the motion to join the
chamber.
Council members
Candice Rusie and John
Caron were the two dis-
senters.
Macomb County
Chambers Director of
Mar ke t i ng and
C o mmu n i c a t i o n s ,
Michelle Fusco, ex-
pressed her support of
the bodys vote.
Were really happy to
have them as an official
partner, she said. Were
really excited to be work-
ing with them in partner-
ship to help them build a
stronger business com-
munity.
Fusco explained how
the chamber can help
make connections within
the city and for the city.
These connections,
this networking can help
businesses, and the city
itself, make these con-
nections in other commu-
nities and grow as a re-
sult of that, Fusco ex-
plained. I think the
chamber, as a connec-
tion, is an important ele-
ment.
Fusco said there are
plenty of ideas and ways
the chamber can help the
city, but those have yet to
be discussed with city of-
ficials.
Were going to get to-
gether and talk with
them, Fusco said. And
were going to exchange
these ideas and help the
city and the business
community in St. Clair
Shores.
The business awards
were handed out to a
trio of businesses locat-
ed al ong Harper
Avenue.
The Copper Penny,
Harper Associates and
ANK Ent erpri ses
earned the distinction in
2014.

Pet of the Week
Lawn equipment
taken
Lawn equipment was
stolen from a residence
on the 24000 block of
Overlake. A pair of
blowers and a line trim-
mer were taken.
Witnesses told police
the suspects were in a
red 1990s-era Chevy
pickup truck.
Suspect takes
the money
and runs
A server at a popular
downtown St. Clair
Shores eatery was jilted
by a thief Sept. 6, when
a white male in his 50s
stole cash off of a table
that had been placed
there by patrons to pay
their bill. Witnesses told
police the man, wearing
a purple shirt and red
cap, simply swiped the
money, approximately
$14, off the table and
raced out of the restau-
rant. Police were called
and were able to arrest
the suspect shortly after
the incident.
Road rage incident
An Eastpointe man is
under arrest after he as-
saulted a St. Clair
Shores resident on the
27000 bl ock of
Blackburn Sept. 6. The
victim told police he be-
lieved the incident start-
ed as a case of road
rage. The suspect fol-
lowed the victim to his
house, then assaulted
the victim, hitting and
kicking him several
times. Witnesses were
able to obtain the li-
cense plate number of
the suspects vehicle,
and St. Clair Shores po-
lice tracked the plate
number to an Eastpointe
address.
Car theft
Police recently re-
sponded to a report of a
stolen vehicle on the
23000 bl ock of
Recreation. The vehi-
cles owner told police
he noticed the car gone
somewhere between 8
p.m. Aug. 27, and 3:45
a.m. Aug. 28. The victim
also told police he be-
lieved the Chevy Impala
might have been stolen
by his grandson.
Hockey gear and
television stolen
The contents of a vehi-
cle were reported stolen
in the 23000 block of
Lingemann. Included in
the items stolen was a
television and hockey
equipment, the report
stated. The owner of the
vehicle told officers the
vehicle was parked in
his driveway when he
went to bed, then, when
he woke the following
morning the television
and equipment were
gone. There was no
signs of forced entry in-
to the vehicle and the
items have yet to be re-
covered.
Repo gone bad
An attempted repos-
session of a vehicle went
south when a male, ap-
proximately 50-55-years
old, came from inside
the house and threat-
ened the tow-truck driv-
er, punching him and
threatening him with
what the driver believes
is a gun. The vehicles
owner told police he be-
lieved the car was being
stolen, and that the gun
was in fact a chrome
flashlight. The driver
did not need medical at-
tention, the report stat-
ed.

These honorees dem-

The Macomb Hall of

Theres a committee,
Fusco said. They deter-

someone who has done
good work in Macomb
County. Someone who
has built a career or busi-
ness here and really
helped to define the com-
munity. Its a very select
group of people and busi-

PHOTOS BY JOHN MCTAGGART
Debra Adamcik draws a caricature portrait.
Adamcik's booth was a popular stop for children, in
particular. The art show featured a wide array of
artistic mediums
Above right, creations of all shapes and sizes were
available for guests to admire and purchase. Above
left, Miss St. Clair Shores, Lauren Brown, greets
patrons heading into the Art Fair. The proceeds
from the event benefitted the Miss St. Clair Shores
Scholarship Program. Right, Dan Hays intricate
works of art were very popular attractions at the
fair.
Art lovers from all over
the area come to the Lac
Ste. Claire Art fair at
Veterans Memorial Park.
This year was no excep-
tion, despite the brisk
weather and rain that
greeted spectators on
Saturday.
I would come here in
everything short of a
monsoon or blizzard,
Paula Lee, from
Richmond, said on a
chilly Saturday after-
noon. Ive been coming
here for years. Cant let a
little wet weather break
that streak.
Lee came to the fair
looking for photographs
to add to the decor in her
freshly remodeled base-
ment.
Cameron Centrifino,
however, came to the fair
in search of the unique
and unusual.
My entire yard is made
up of crazy sculptures,
he said. Ive tried to do
them myself, but I real-
ized that it might take
some talent to do that. I
dont have much for that.
So, I come here every
year and get something to
add to my collection.
The event is more than
just a destination for cus-
tomers and fans of fine
art sculpture. Its also a
fundraiser for the Miss St.
Clair Shores Scholarship
Pageant.
Were not getting a lot
of cooperation from the
weather today, Miss St.
Clair Shores Scholarship
Program head Elizabeth
Munger said Saturday af-
ternoon. But were opti-
mistic it wont keep the
people away.
It didnt.
By Sunday, the shows
final day, the cloudy skies
cleared and more patrons
flocked to the park for the
event.
I looked at the fore-
cast and saw the weather
was going to be better on
Sunday, Gary Gardner
said. So thats why Im
here today. Its a beauti-
ful day to enjoy the art
and maybe even pick up
a piece or two for my
place up north. Who
knows? I came last year
and found something.
Same thing will probably
happen this year, too.
Either way, its a great
way to spend a Sunday
morning.

City Council approved
the sale of yet another par-
cel of vacant property at
its last meeting, this one
on Stephens.
The property was a for-
mer blight property, and
the structure on the prop-
erty was demolished by a
bank prior to the city ac-
quiring the land,
Community Development
and Inspection director
Chris Rayes said.
The property was origi-
nally listed in Oct. 2013,
then re-listed in April of
2014.
Weve got plenty of lots
down in the South Lake
district, Councilman
John Caron pointed out.
And this is the first one
that, I believe, has come
forward for a sale to build
a new home on. Thats
good to see.
Even with a sale price
of $9,000, down from the
original asking price of
$11,400 the city is still
on the positive side in
terms of profitability on
the lot.
The city has about
$7,900 into the property.
City sells vacant parcel
on Stephens
Members of the citys
Cultural Committee
work very hard to cre-
ate a schedule of diverse
and enriching things for
residents to take part in
each year.
In the past, theyve of-
fered everything from
art shows to guided
tours of the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
The group's latest of-
fering, however, is a
new and exciting idea.
At 10:30 a.m. Sunday,
Sept. 28, residents (and
non-residents alike)
have the chance to
board a bus at the li-
brary and take a trip to
the historic Redford
Theater.
The theater is an icon-
ic piece of Detroit cul-
tural history, dating to
1910, and complete with
intricate and breath-
taking architecture and
scenery.
It is really a spectac-
ular place to see, com-
mittee member Kelly
Saullo said. Its one of
those places that every-
one should see. Its real-
ly something amazing.
This committee offer-
ing doesnt end at just a
visit to the theater.
For a ticket price of
$25, patrons not only
get a bus ride to the
Redford theater, they al-
so get a ticket to see one
of the countrys most
treasured films West
Side Story.
Its a movie that is a
real classic, Saullo
said. The musical itself
has been done by so ma-
ny theaters, schools
you name it. I think ev-
eryone knows the story,
and the songs are so
recognizable, too. West
Side Story appeals to
just about everyone.
Prior to the films
screening, legendary
star, Rita Moreno, will
be available for photos,
autographs and to talk
about her Oscar-
winning performance in
the 1961 film, which
won the Academy
Award for Best Picture.
There is a $10 charge
for photos and auto-
graphs with Moreno,
Saullo added.
How the committee
wound up with this idea
is simple, Saullo said.
We sent out e-mails
to people who had par-
ticipated in other things
weve done in the past,
she said. We got a lot of
responses that asked
about a trip to the
Redford Theater. So, we
looked into that and
found this event.
The theater has been
restored and is operated
by an all-volunteer orga-
nization.
This is the first event
like this the cultural
committee has offered
and been a part of,
Saullo said. Were very
excited about it.
For tickets, go to the
St. Clair Shores Public
Library at 11 Mile and
Jefferson or call (586)
771-9020. Tickets must
be picked up prior to
Sunday, Sept. 28.

1B BOATING 2014/WINTERIZATION | 2-4B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014
The 2015 Ford F-150 is the toughest,
smartest, most capable F-150 ever. Its
signature fully boxed ladder frame is
all-new, with more high-strength
steel. High-strength, military-grade
aluminum is used throughout the
F-150 body for the first time, improv-
ing dent and ding resistance and sav-
ing weight. When it arrives in show-
rooms later this year, the all-new
F-150 will have undergone the equiv-
alent of more than 10 million miles of
torture testing to ensure it meets or
exceeds Built Ford Tough standards.
In addition to an all-new 2.7-liter
EcoBoost engine offering a complete
lineup of powertrains lets customers
tailor the toughest pickup truck to
their needs. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost
engine returns an all-new normally
aspirated 3.5-liter V6 debuts and
there is an improved 5.0-liter V8. The
F-150 is manufactured at the
Dearborn Truck Plant and Kansas
City Assembly Plant in Claycomo,
Mo. The manufacturer's suggested re-
tail price starts at $26,615.
