The poster, and the system that goes
with it, are a change to the schools visitor policy, and one that will spread to the
rest of the Verona Area School Districts
school as soon as this week.
The system, from Raptor Technologies,
has been fully operational at VAHS so far
this year and the computing system will
be installed over the next couple of weeks
at other schools, said VASD school safety
coordinator Todd Endl.
Raptors main attraction is that it automatically scans sex offender registries
from all states for names that match a
potential school visitors after scanning
an ID. In addition, Endl said the schools
can program in information on restraining orders or custody issues pertaining to
specific students so we dont have the
mistake of the kid going with somebody
theyre not supposed to.
The system, which cost $15,034 to
set up in all district schools, requires

That ID includes the visitors name, the
place they are visiting and what time they
arrived. When they leave, they hand back
that nametag and whoever is at the desk
checks them out of the system.
All of those measures provide more
information than the district had available
at times in the past, said VASD superintendent Dean Gorrell.
Youve got another level of security,
Gorrell said. Thats always what its
about knowing whos in the building
and when they come in and when they
leave.
So far, Rochelle Pagel, who works in
the visitors office at VAHS, said the system has run smoothly, and shes glad for
the extra step of security. She even said
the process is faster than the previous
check-in protocol.
Its so slick, its less work, she said.

Overall scores drop but state

The Verona Area School District once

again received good reviews from the state
Department of Public Instruction.
DPI released the 2013-14 District
Report Cards Sept. 16, and VASD
received a 73.4 out of a possible 100. That
put the district just above the 73 minimum
for the Exceeds Expectations category,
the second-highest rating possible.
Last year, the district scored 74.4.
Statewide, 159 of the 424 school districts reached the Exceeds Expectations
level, with only nine reaching the highest
mark, Significantly Exceeds Expectations. Milwaukee Public Schools was the
only district that Fails to Meet Expectations, according to a DPI news release.
The overall scores are based on student
achievement, student growth, closing gaps
and on-track and postsecondary readiness.

and leases for the remaining 10,000 square feet of
the new building are being
negotiated, Slaby said. Two
other planned buildings in
the 240-acre development
already have city approvals,
including a 193,000-squarefoot hotel and a retail building featuring two restaurants, a karate studio and
four smaller offices.
Reinke was as apologetic as he ever gets in public when explaining to the
dozen or so people on hand
Thursday that some businesses interested in locating in the development will
simply have to wait their
turn as architects and contractors put together one
building at a time and deal
with those already in the
pipeline, as he put it.
Right now were taking

Thats a stark contrast
from a couple of years
ago, when financing and
red tape were holding up
the long-planned project
but the market was still too
soft to force anything to be
accelerated.
Now, the first building
is weeks away from being
finished, and while the
development almost certainly wont meet its firstyear obligations under the

Tuesday.
In the second building,
Badger GraniteWerks is
roughly doubling its current
footprint in the tiny Venture Court industrial park
to an 11,000-square-foot
chunk on the south side of
the building, and Zerorez is
too, planning to move from
its location on Locust Drive
to a 4,000-square-foot home
in the middle of the building. Slaby told the Press on

Tuesday that the remaining

space will be filled either
by one 10,000-square-foot
tenant or three smaller ones.
Ive got too many tenants for that one, Slaby
quipped.
The retail building, which
has acquired leases but has
not yet begun being built,
features Freschii, a Toronto-based company that
produces health-conscious
food, such as salads, shakes
and wraps, and is expanding to three stores in the
Madison area, including
one at West Towne Mall,
Slaby said. That restaurant
will use a pickup window
but not a drive-through, and
will be 2,300 square feet.
Its website says its mission is taking a stand and
being good to the earth
by eliminating traditional
industry staples: excess
packaging, heavy energy
consumption, and greasy
processed meals.
A second restaurant
locating there will be an
expansion of Sun Prairiebased Salvatores Tomato
Pies, as was reported in
other media several weeks
ago. That Italian restaurant
serves comfort food that
you can feel comfortable
feeding to your family,
according to its website.
Hell be making this his
flagship restaurant, Slaby
said.

Veronan seeks
crowdsource
funding for project

Pushing for $12,000

According to kickstarter.com, as of Monday
afternoon, 54 people had donated a total of $4,519
toward Hartjes project. If the project does not
receive $12,000 by 9 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, it
receives no funding. If it does, it is funded the full
amount. See Hartjes Language in Motion project
proposal at KCK.ST/1B9HQQH.

The world may be heading to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2016 Summer
Olympic Games, but that
doesnt mean the people
expected from hundreds
of countries will be able to
understand each other.
Veronas Julia Hartjes is
hoping to help fix that problem, but she needs some
help.
During several years
abroad in Europe and South
America in both study
abroad programs and work,
she noticed an impressive
amount of demand for
English language education
abroad. In particular, while
spending a recent summer
break in Rio de Janeiro, she
was struck by a growing

demand for
private English classes in that
increasingly
global city
that recently hosted
Hartjes
World Youth
Day and the
2014 World
Cup and is preparing to host
the upcoming Olympics.
Hartjes, 24, who began
studying languages at a
young age, founded Language in Motion a year
ago to address the need
for flexible, personalized

Fall Sale

and affordable language

classes with native speakers
around the world. Classes
are held in-person and via
Skype to fit the schedules
of students and teachers.
Once a request is received,
teachers and students are
matched, and the company
manages the curriculum,
scheduling and payments.
Hartjes said after gaining traction in Brazil, the
company recently expanded to Western Europe and
the U.S. To increase the
available number of classes, Language in Motion
launched a crowdsource

fundraising campaign
through Kickstarter at the
beginning of the month,
with the goal of raising
$12,000 by Oct. 2.
Money is collected only
if the goal is reached. So
far, more than $4,500 has
come in.
Hartjes said the funds
would be used to manage
the rapidly growing number of student requests by
improving software used to
match teachers and learners
globally, as well as support
implementation of a free
entrepreneurship course
with English classes for
Rio de Janeiro small business owners in low-income
areas, in preparation for the
Olympics.
O u r g o a l w i t h L a nguage in Motion is to create
opportunities through language education, to increase
cultural understanding, and
to leave a lasting positive
impact on local communities, she said.

VACT relocation is a win-win

I am writing today to express
my gratitude to the City of Verona
for voting to move forward with
the Verona Area Community Theater (VACT) relocation project.
I remember my oldest daughters first audition at VACT 11
years ago. As a 5-year-old, she
was cast in the ensemble and
was quickly bitten by the theater bug. After playing in over 20
shows with a variety of theater
companies, VACT will always be
her home.
I have two other children who
also have grown up doing a couple of shows here and there with
VACT. They are always welcome
in the VACT community and have
learned to appreciate the dedication and hard work it takes to put
on a quality performance.
The growth of VACT is not
surprising as their commitment to
children of all ages who find their

love in the arts can engage and

enhance their talents in all facets
of theater (on stage and behind the
scenes).
It is important that VACT be
able to expand their space so they
can provide a state-of-the-art venue that will serve as an incubator
and focal point for theater arts in
Verona and the surrounding communities.
I strongly support the citys
decision to move the fire station
site as I want VACT to continue
to provide an atmosphere that
will provide a variety of theaterrelated programs to a diverse body
of participants that will assist in
developing talent and character
while building the audiences of
tomorrow.

College students should

learn financial responsibility

lot of things are making

me feel my age these
days. Im approaching a milestone birthday, Im
no longer the youngest person
at industry conferences and I
recently discovered that I
can wear my
oldest sons
shoes (seriously how is
that possible?).
But perhaps the
hardest thing
for me to face
Arndt
is watching the
beautiful little
flower girl from my wedding go
off to college.
Ive had several conversations with both her and her
parents recently and I have no
doubt that she will excel. She
is bright, mature and motivated
all of the ingredients of a
successful student. But I hope
she learns more while in school
than just what is taught in the
classroom.
Going away to college is
often the first official step into
adulthood. For many students
it is the first time that they are
on their own without a parent
there telling them what to do
and when to do it. Some students really struggle with the
new found freedom while others flourish as they decide when
to go to bed, how much time to
study and when (or if, in some
cases) to go to class.
For many, it will also be
the first time that they will be
handling some of their own
finances.
Regardless of who is going
to be paying for college costs
it is important that parents
and students sit down and talk
about what they are and who
is responsible for paying them.
Parents should be clear about
what they might cover and also
what the student is responsible
for on their own.
If the student will be responsible for any of their own
expenses, whether it be room
and board or just entertainment,
they need to have a plan for
how they will do so. Talk with

them about the pros and cons of

using savings, taking out student loans or working part time
and let them be involved in the
decisions. It gives the student
a sense of ownership in the process and hopefully an appreciation for where the money comes
from.
As part of this process help
the student develop a budget.
Even if the budget is just for a
spending money allowance it
is a great life lesson to have to
save up for a bigger goal or to
learn what happens if you spend
too much, too soon and dont
have any money left for the rest
of the week. Want to go somewhere for spring break? You
have $50 a week available for
spending money so you better
start setting some aside now if
you want to go somewhere in
March.
Students will also have to
learn to be responsible for keeping track of bills and making
sure that they get paid on time.
It comes as a shock to many
parents but most colleges only
send the bills to the student
not directly to the parents. So
the student will need to take
responsibility for making sure
that everything from the tuition
bill to their books get paid for
in a timely manner.
Eventually, many students
decide to move into apartments
off campus which leads to all
kinds of new lessons. Things
like paying for utilities (you
mean there was a reason mom
always kept the heat at 67 in
the winter??) are often a foreign concept for students but
something that everyone needs
to learn. Adding a roommate(s)
to the mix and having to work
out shared expenses can add a
whole other layer of life lessons.
One of the biggest pitfalls
that students can face is the
whole concept of credit. I still
remember getting pre-approved
credit card applications in my
dorm mail box as a freshman
in college. I had no assets and
little income but I was going
to college so banks apparently
considered me a good risk.

Once a student reaches 18

years of age they can legally
sign a contract and that includes
filling out an application and
getting a credit card. Having
a credit card isnt necessarily
a bad thing. In fact, if used
responsibly, a credit card can
be an excellent way for a young
person to begin building a good
credit history. Unfortunately,
credit cards can also be an easy
way for people of any age to get
themselves into trouble.
The best thing that parents
can do is have an open, honest
and on-going dialog with their
child about finances.
Help guide them in developing a budget and periodically
check in to see how it is going.
Keep track of upcoming due
dates but try to let the student
be the one to take the lead
in making sure that the bill
is handled and payment processed. Work with your child
to start building credit and
think carefully before trying
to forbid them from having a
credit card (we all know what
teenagers tend to do when told
no). Consider either taking out
a joint credit card with them
(which can allow you access to
information about it) or helping them to take out their own,
preferably with a fairly modest
credit limit.
College is a time of transition and learning in many ways.
With some help hopefully your
student wont have to learn all
their lessons the hard way.

Seize the Day After Tomorrow

We are told in a variety of ways to seize the day: Carpe
Diem; eat, drink and be merry; and in short, enjoy life
while you can, for tomorrow we may die. But, more likely
we will not die tomorrow and so there is something to be
said for delaying gratification and planning for the future.
All of this talk of seizing the day, when taken even half
seriously, is often just a way to rationalize not planning
and preparing for the future. This doesnt mean we have
to be overly anxious about the future, but it does mean
that we should plan prudently for a long and healthy life.
Two good ways to do this are education and saving.
Aristotle claimed that education is the best provision
for old age, presumably because it cultivates the mind
and allows one to reflect on the most important things,
i.e., the divine things and how to live a virtuous life. And
of course we should be saving for that proverbial rainy
day, for assuredly, for most of us at least, tomorrow will
come, and the day after tomorrow as well. He who does
not plan for the future is ensuring that it will be a meager
one.
Christopher Simon via Metro News Service
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap
bountifully.

Bridge Snapshot Day

adno=363364-01

The Upper Sugar River Watershed Association (USRWA), in partnership with the River Alliance of
Wisconsin, hosted a statewide Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Bridge Snapshot Day on Saturday, Sept.
13. Volunteers gathered at Paoli Park to learn how to identify invasive species that threaten the waters,
dispersed to priority bridge crossings in hunt of them and reconvened to submit their findings.
Above, volunteer Christal Campbell places an aquatic plant from the river into a plastic bag for
observation.
At right, volunteer Bill Keen finds and removes a tire from the water, an object that is definitely considered invasive to the river. At left, volunteers try to determine whether an aquatic plant found under the
bridge along Riverside Road is native or invasive.

recently had a child, what should we do to prepare ourselves

financially?
A. When you add a child to your family, its an exciting time in your life and a busy
time, too. Still, youll want to think about making some key financial arrangements to
accommodate your new childs presence. Here are some suggestions to consider: First,
apply for a Social Security number for your new child. Next, review all your insurance
health, disability and life to make sure your new child is properly covered. Also,
look to the future by starting to save for college. You may want to consider a taxadvantaged college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. Finally, update the beneficiary
designations on your IRA, 401(k), life insurance and other accounts. And consult
with your legal advisor about any other arrangements that might make sense for your
situation. The future is not ours to see so it pays to be prepared.

A. In my experience, section 529 plans (like Edvest) make better college savings
plan than Roth IRAs. Roth IRAs are great, and you can take advantage of a special
penalty exemption if the money is spent for higher education, but taxpayers tend to
have trouble keeping records and filing the right tax forms.
Treating your Roth like a piggy bank money in and out can get confusing for

Q. Why should I get my duct work cleaned?

A. There are a lot of reasons why people get their duct work cleaned. The two most common rea-

sons are indoor air quality and energy savings. Through normal everyday life, we generate a great
deal of contaminants and air pollutants, a common home generates up to 40 pounds of pollutants
per year in their air ducts. These pollutants are then pumped through your air ducts 5-7 times per
day. This creates problems for people with environmental allergies, respiratory health conditions,
and autoimmune disorders. The other most common reason, is to save some money. According to
the US Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling a home
is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the
life of your system. When an HVAC system is clean, it doesnt have to work as hard to maintain
the temperature that you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to lower monthly bills.

facility if I am a healthy senior?

A. Even though you are currently in good health, it is never too early

to start looking for an assisted living facility. More and more facilities
for seniors offer graduated living options. Many facilities have 2 or 3
levels of living that range from no care needed, to some care needed,
or even if full assisted living care is needed. We recommend you look around, visit several
places, ask a lot of questions about activities and what price options they have. You will find
the right place for you. Planning ahead today will make the transition easier tomorrow!

or numbness in the hands and wrists. Once we make a proper diagnosis we can
treat your pain, without surgery, utilizing a four-step approach. First, we would
assess your ergonomics at work or at home so that you could make immediate
corrections to your environment which is helpful in preventing the situation

subluxations of the spine and extremity. Correcting the subluxation is essential
in restoring function to the nerve, muscle and joint area. Third, we would begin
massage treatment of the arm and wrist to reduce adhesions and maintain flexibility of the wrist flexors
and extensors. Lastly, we would prescribe exercises that could be done at work or at home to maintain
strength and flexibility. With these four simple steps you can typically avoid having to resort to surgery
and you come away with the knowledge and ability to prevent it from happening again.

Q. Why do some dogs get dental disease while some seem to never have a prob-

Q. My dentist recently told me that two of my fillings need to be replaced. I have had
these filings for 15 years; they dont hurt, so why do I need to have them replaced?

lem with their teeth at all?

A. Periodontal disease is 30% bugs and 70% host response. By this, I mean, that while colonization of

the oral cavity by bacteria is a necessary trigger for the development of periodontal disease, the patients
inflammatory reaction to these pathogens is what causes the majority of the tissue damage. This response
is thought to be genetically determined and some breeds are more likely to respond in this way than others.
The first step in the oral assessment and treatment of periodontal disease is a thorough antibacterial rinse
and tooth scaling both above and below the gumline by one of our experienced veterinary technicians.
During the exam, the doctor will be assessing the teeth for obvious fractures, wear, discoloration or
malalignment. He will also be examining the soft tissues of the mouth (tongue, gums, tonsils, lymph nodes,
Brian Hoelscher
etc) for injury, inflammation or cancer.
D.V.M.
As part of the anesthetized cleaning and exam, intra-oral x-rays are of utmost importance as 60% of the
tooth structure is below the gumline where we cannot assess it. These x-rays will help us find and treat painful conditions early so that
we can avoid more invasive procedures and prevent discomfort. The most important component of home care is daily teeth brushing.
Calculus forms on the teeth within 40 hours if the teeth have not been brushed, therefore it is very important to brush teeth at least
once per day. There are products such as dental treats, chews and water additives that
help to minimize the colonization of oral bacteria. These are in no way a substitute for
brushing. Happy, healthy mouths lead to happy healthy pets....and owners!

A. Although a well placed filling can provide service for many years, the harsh environment of the
mouth will slowly cause fillings and any dental work to wear, deteriorate and sometimes even corrode.
Constant pressure from chewing, grinding, clenching and even abrasive or acidic foods and drinks may
cause a filling to wear away, chip, crack or leak. When fillings begin to wear, chip or crack, small
gaps or spaces develop between the filling and the tooth. Although you may not be able to feel these
gaps, decay-causing bacteria can easily find their way under the filling and cause decay. This kind of
decay can grow more aggressively under a filling and can be very difficult for the dentist to identify.
Dr. James Sands, DDS
Sometimes fillings that leak or have decay may become sensitive to cold, hot or sweets but often by
the time they become sensitive, the decay has caused great damage possibly needing more extensive
treatment like root canal therapy and/or a crown. At times an old large filling that is failing may need
something stronger such as a crown to prevent fracture. A crown is like a splint or cast placed over
a tooth to hold it together just as a cast is placed around a broken bone to stabilize it while it heals. A
crown just isnt removed. One of our many roles as dentist is to try to prevent disease or further damage
to your teeth. Replacing the failing fillings can and does prevent bigger problems later. Waiting for
something to hurt may be too late and will likely be more costly and time consuming.

the best thing I can do for them to be successful in

A. There are some very simple things that will encourage your

child to do well. Read TO them and WITH them, when they are old
enough to read on their own. Speak positively about school. Ask your child about their day every
day and ask them who they are playing with at school. Periodically check in with their teacher to
get his/her perspective on your childs adjustment and performance. Create a quiet place in your
home that will be their homework station and give them a few simple school-related tasks until
they have true homework.

Q. Can evidence that I refused to take a breathalyzer test be used against me in court?
A. Typically, the Fifth Amendment prohibits the State from using a defendants statements against

him. A defendants refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test is a statement, which could be used in
court to convince the jury that he did not take a breathalyzer because he had consumed alcohol. As
such, the Supreme Court has ruled that it violates a defendants Fifth Amendment rights for the
State to use his refusal to submit to a breathalyzer against him. Wisconsin drivers, on the other hand,
have no constitutional right to refuse to take a breathalyzer test. State law requires a driver to take
a breathalyzer or other test for intoxication when requested by a police officer. The reason for this
statute is to identify and remove drunk drivers from the public roads in order to prevent accidents.
The consequence for a driver refusing to take a breathalyzer test is that evidence of that refusal may
be used in court against him. The bottom line is that you have a constitutional right to refuse an
intoxication test so long as you are not driving.

budget?
A: Spend some time de-cluttering. Kitchens are infamous for being a
catch-all. Remove unnecessary items including counter top, appliances,
utensils, and extra towels. And don't forget to clean off the front of the
fridge! Consider updating the cabinet hardware, replace small items like
faucets and light fixtures that are old or outdated. Set the table. Make it
an inviting space with matching place mats, settings, and centerpiece.
These are all fairly easy tasks to get your home all set for selling!

A. According to the EPA, the air inside your home can be up to 100 times more
polluted than the air outside and considering the fact that most Americans spend
approximately 90% of their time indoors, air quality indoors may present greater
health risks than outdoor air pollution. A variety of products are available to help
control the quality of air in your home. These include high efficiency air cleaners,
automatic humidifiers and dehumidifiers, air exchangers, zone control systems and
UV lamps. To learn more about any of these products, contact Dave at OK Heating

often occur when a person changes activity, starts a new sport/hobby, or has

Nelson breaks more records at Parker Nameth cuts into rivals lead
JEREMY JONES
Sports editor

Its never too early for junior Beata

Nelson to break a few records. Nelson, the Verona/Mount Horeb girls
swimming record holder in nine of
11 events was at it again Friday in a
131-39 drubbing at Janesville Parker.
Nelson set a new Parker pool
record in the 50 free (23.53), helping the Wildcats sweep the top three
spots. She also set a new school
record in the 100 breaststroke with a
1:05.43.
Nelson was joined by Maizie Seidl,
Olivia Prescott and Carrie Snodgrass
as Verona opened the meet taking the
top two spots in the 200 medley relay
(1:56.75).
Verona/Mount Horeb head coach
Bill Wuerger said the highlight was
Sarah Schultz, who was the surprise
of the meet for the Wildcats, dropping 57 seconds from her 500 free
time-trial to finish with a meet-best
5:48.72. Teammate Sammy Seymour
finished runner-up one of four 1-2
finishes by the Wildcats.
Natalee Drapp led Veronas 1-2
finish in the 200 free with her time of
2:08.07, while Kristi Larson helped

Verona match the finish in the 200

IM, taking the event in 2:25.34. Seidl
paced Verona in the 100 free, leading
another 1-2 finish in 56.15.
Sophie Henshue (1:07.49) helped
the Wildcats sweep the top three
spots in the 100 backstroke.
Verona/Mount Horeb also dominated in the two remaining relays as
Schultz, Nelson, Drapp and Prescott
led a sweep of the top three spots in
the 200 free with a time of 1:45.57,
while Lindsey Steinl, Caroline Hagelin, Larsen and Snodgrass helped
Verona sweep the 400 free to close
out the meet in 4:01.07.
Our girls had some very good
swims in off-events across the
board, Wuerger said.
Maddie Nelson secured Parkers lone win in the 100 butterfly
(1:04.64).
Veronas JV team added a 131-26
win over the Vikings.

Brookfield East Invite

Verona swam well enough to
sweep all three relays and two individual events Saturday at the Brookfield East Invitational. Still, it was
not enough to help the Wildcats hold
off Big Eight rival Middleton.

JEREMY JONES

Though Verona defeated the Cardinals earlier this season in a conference dual meet, the Wildcats fell
35 points shy of Middleton over the
weekend.
We swam well, but Middleton
swam better, said Wuerger, whose
team fell 439-404.5.
Junior Julia VerVoort, Shelby
Rozeboom, Larsen and Seymour
took the 200 medley relay to start the
meet in 1:52.38.
Larsen, Seidl, Rozeboom and Nelson went on to win the 200 free relay
in 1:38.1, while Seidl, Henshue, Nelson and VerVoort added the 400 free
relay (3:40.45).
Nelson highlighted the meet by
breaking the meet, pool and her
own school records in the 200 IM
(2:02.74) and 100 free (51.19).
Roozeboom finished runner-up
in the 50 free (24.6), while Seidl
(1:58.77) and Larsen (1:11.09)
took second in the 200 free and 100
breaststroke, respectively. Seidl
added a third-place finish in the 500
(5:24.52).
Freshman Maggie Nunn made her
high school debut in diving and finished fourth.

laurels, he said.

This year, VASD scored

lower than last year in all
four of the priority areas,
though it was still above the
state average in three of the
four.
In both years district
report cards have been
released, the district scored
below the state average in
the closing gaps category,
based on narrowing the
achievement and graduation gaps discrepancies
in test scores and graduation rates between white
and minority students. Its
a problem district officials
have discussed at length
in recent years, including
bringing in outside speakers and looking at reworking prerequisites to take
Advanced Placement classes at Verona Area High
School.
The state average as a
whole also dropped in that
category, from 66.8 to 66.3.
State superintendent
Tony Evers, formerly a
VASD superintendent, said
in the release the scores
make districts around the
state accountable, and are a
good starting point for discussions with parents and
others in the community on
how schools can improve.
Most of our public
schools and school districts
are providing a solid education to our children, but we

Of the nine VASD
schools with enough data
to receive a grade, all met
or exceeded expectations,
with one significantly
exceeding expectations.
Six schools received lower
scores than in 2012-13.
New Century School,
a charter, was the highest
scorer in the district with an
84.9. One factor may have
been the NA rating for
the closing gaps category
because of a low enrollment
and a 79 percent White not
Hispanic population, well
above the districts 67.6
percent.
Savanna Oaks had the
districts second-highest
score with a 77.5, and
scored well above the state
average in each of the four
priority areas, including
closing gaps. The school
scored a 70 in that area,
above the middle school
state average of 66.5.
VAHS, Stoner Prairie and Glacier Edge also
received exceeds expectations grades.
The rest of the districts
schools, excluding Verona
Area International School
and the Exploration Academy, all met expectations.
VAIS and EA did not have
enough data for a grade, but
were both given a Satisfactory Progress rating.

Security: System scans sex offender registry from all 50 states for name matches
Continued from page 1
we possibly can for being
more secure, Endl said.
Because of that database,
after one visit, visitors will
no longer have to show an
ID. Just provide their name,
and the school secretary can
look up the name and photo to confirm their identity
and print them off a visitor
nametag.
Gorrell said he felt the
district also needed a measure of consistency in
policies among its nine
school buildings.
Folks were kind of
doing their own thing, he
said of previous years.
The system doesnt come
without a hurdle or two,
though both Gorrell and Endl
said the issues shouldnt
be major. Gorrell said the
potential of someone without photo identification, for
whatever reason, is something the board will address
at its Sept. 22 meeting with
specific policy language.
Weve had that issue
before, he said. Weve
been doing background
checks on volunteers for
several years now.
He declined to discuss
specifically the language
the board will look at next
Monday.
The system also can create an awkward moment
for someone who shares a
name with a sex offender.
But secretaries can use toe
pictures to determine if it
is the offender or just an
unlucky coincidence.

Photos by Scott Girard

Left, Spanish teacher Carol

White helps visitor Marla King
get a visitors badge. King had
visited previously and did not
need to give White her ID.
Above, the scanners the district
purchased from Raptor that
provide a screen of identification
information, below.

In fact, Endl said one

such incident already happened this year at VAHS,
but the sex offender was
African-American, the visitor white.
It only took a week to
run into that issue, Endl
said.
Gorrell said the systems
use would be limited to
school hours, so it wouldnt
be a problem for a parent
walking a child to a classroom before school or similar situations.
This is really going to
be for after the doors are
closed and locked and youre

coming in to do volunteer
work, youre coming in to go
visit a classroom, he said.
I dont anticipate this being
used for dropping your kid
off in the morning.
Gorrell said recent school
shootings were part of the
reason for increasing security over the past few years,
even though the district
itself hasnt had any issues
to speak of with visitors to
schools.
Every time theres an
incident someplace, you
learn something from it,
he said. Youre just aware
of other things that are
going on.
