Back Tension Measurement/Adjustment (Fig. 6, 7)
1. Confirm that the position of the tension pole is correctly positioned. If not, refer to the "Tension Pole Position Adjustment
Proccedures".
2. Play back cassette torque meter (play torque) for about 20 seconds (wait until the tape transporting system comes to be stable).
3. Measure the back tension by reading the spart of torque meter. The measured result must meet the specification (35-55 gr).
4. If the result is not within the specification, get rid of cassette torque meter from the mainbase and adjust the tension spring (If the
measured result exceeds the specification, locate the spring on the hook "A". If the value dose not reach the specification, locate the
spring on the hook "B".) and repeat the step 1 thru 3 of "Tension Pole Position Adjustment" (Fig. 7).
NOTE:
It is recommended that the measurement should be repeated at least three times to guarantee an accurate reading.

27
Operating the VCR Without a Cassette Tape
1. Remove the cassette Loading Mechanism.
2. By hand revolve the worm counterclockwise 7-8 times until the pole base loading process starts automatically.
3. Then PLAY mode appears. If you want ANOTHER mode, Press the desired button.
4. If the mechanism is in the desired mode, remove the Power.
Tension Pole Position Adjustment
1. Make the mode PLAY without a cassette loaded. Refer to "Operating the VCR Without a Cassette Tape".
2. Confirm that the datum hole of the tension lever is coincident with that of the main base.
3. If the above confirmation is not satisfying, turn Band Brake Cap clockwise or counterclockwise until the two holes are coincident
with each other.

MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS (Continued)
Tape Path Alignment Procedures
The tape transporting system is precisely aligned at the factory and under the normal circumstances will not require adjustment.
However, if noise appears in the playback picture, then either the tape damage occured or the tape path has been changed, and readjust-
ment of the tape path is necessary.
Use the following flow chart when Tape Path Alignment is necessary.

2) FUNCTIONS BY BLOCK
!CTL Amplification & Waveshaping circuit
CTL amplifier amplifies CTL signal read by CTL () Head, about 60dB regardless of modes.
This amplified signal becomes a waveform in point A, and then output to CTL waveshaping through C508.
Rec CTL signal is recorded to CTL (+) terminal by pin #21 during Rec mode.
CTL wavesheping circuit which changes CTL wavefrom at A into square wave, is composed of schimitter trigger circuit using OP
Amp IC and then input to 25pin.
42
@START/END SENSOR CIRCUIT
As it is difficult to deliver light due to direct insertion of IR LED & sensor on main PCB, it is delivered by reflection through prism.
#Reel sensor circuit
Reel sensor is directly inserted on main PCB and the transmission type is applied as below. Capstan motor speed in high-speed rewind
mode is controlled by calculating the remain time of a tape with supply reel and take-up reel pulse.

6) Operation
When the RF signal received by antenna is input to TMI Antenna Input and user selects a channel, the CH control data (clock, data,
enable) memorized in a MI-COM is output. The data runs PLL IC of TMI tuner part and outputs the selected channel to IF module. The
input signal in IF module is demodulated to video signal on video detector part through IF amp and saw filter, and is output through
4.5MHz trap circuit. The demodulated signal is input in FM detector circuit through 4.5MHz BPF circuit, and is demodulated to audio
signal on FM detector circuit, and is finally output. During the above process, AFT voltage is input in a MI-COM which detects AFT
() in 1.875V or less, or AFT (+) in 2.812V or more and the best point of the tuning is got.
In case of Hi-Fi model, video signal out of TMI, is input to pin 3 of SW IC, where as video signal from input jack is input to pin 6. In
both cases, signal is selected by tuner/line selection signal input to pin 4. Every signal selected by SW IC, is output to pin 8 and then
input to video part.
Audio signal out of TMI is input pin 12 of MPX module (SBX1837) through variable registor for stereo separation adjustment. MPX
module makes stereo and sap signal separatedly and then they one input to MATRIX circuit through demodulation circuit MATRIX circuit
controls L out (pin 3) or R out (pin 4) by stereo/sap control signal input to pin 9,10 of MPX module, and makes them input to audio part.
In case of mono model, video signal output of TMI is input to Pin 12 of SW IC, where as video signal from input jack is input to Pin 1 of
SW IC, and Audio signal output of TMI is input to Pin 5 of SW IC, where as audio signal from input jack is input to Pin 3 of SW IC.
In both case, video & audio signal is selected by tuner/line selection signal that input to Pin 9, 10, 11.
Video signal selected by SW IC is output to Pin 14 and then input to video part. Audio signal selected by SW IC is output to Pin 4 and then
input to audio part.
7) The operation of AFT
Sync search checks whether there is sync or not, and the search starts at center frequency. Tuning frequency is increased by 0.5MHz up
to +2MHz and decreased by 0.5MHz upto -2MHz from center frequency. If sync is detected within this range, fo 2MHz, window
search at a detected point starts. If not, the first fo data is output as it is. AFT window search decreases/increases PLL data by 62.5 KHz
upto maximum 2MHz (32 steps).
i) The first data is within AFT window
ii) The first data is under AFT window
iii) The first data is over AFT window
Refer to "NEXT PAGE DIAGRAM"
Sync search should be carried out in advance in order to get AFT voltage. If a channel is selected by user, channel data memorized in a
MI-COM are output to PLL IC. The PLL IC sends the fvco (local oscillation frequency) of the equivalent channel to tuner IC, and the
MI-COM check whether there is sync or not 150ms after the data output. If the sync is "low", window search is worked, and if it is
"high", sync search is done.

8) The operation of MPX IC (SBX 1837) Hi-Fi Only
!L + R (MAIN)
MPX signal is input from Pin 39 (COMP IN), and SAP and TELEMETRY signals are suppressed by stereo LPF.
Then, pilot cancel is carried out. Finally L-R and SAP signals are eliminated by MAIN LPF and frequency characteristics are rendered
flat by de-emphasis to be input to the matrix.
@L R (SUB)
Up to pilot cancel, the course is the same as for L+R signal. As LR signal is the amplitude modulation of the double side band quies-
cent carrier (DSB-AM modulation), there is no carrier signal. To this effect the carrier signal (dummy sine wave) is played back using
the pilot signal. As a result LR signal is demodulated. Finally high band residual components are removed by means of SUB LPF and
LR signal is input to dbx-TV block through NRSW circuit.
#SAP
As shown in Fig. 1 SAP is an FM signal with a 5fH carrier. First SAP signal alone is extracted using SAP BPF. This is FM detected.
Finally high band residual components are removed by means of SAP LPF, frequency characteristics are rendered flat and SAP is input
to dbx-TV block through NRSW circuit.
$Mode discrimination
Stereo discrimination is executed through the detection of the pilot signal amplitude SAP discrimination is executed by means of the
5fH carrier and noise detection around 20KHz after FM detection.
%dbx-TV block
SAP and LR signals input to Pin 24 (ST IN) and Pin 21 (SAP IN) respectively, are selected by means of mode control inside NRSW
circuit, and only one of the 2 is input to dbx-TV block.
The input signal of this block passes through the fixed de-emphasis circuit and added to the variable de-emphasis circuit. This output
passes through the external capacitance to be added to VCA (Voltage Control Amplifier). VCA output is current-voltage conversed by
means of an operational amplifier and at the end input to the matrix.
The variable de-emphasis circuit transfer function and VCA gain are controlled by the effective value detection circuit. Their respective
effective value detection circuits detect the effective value of signals that have provided the specified weighting through a filter, to
obtain the control signal.

3. VIDEO & AUDIO CIRCUIT
1) Video circuit
!EEmode
1.0V Vp-p video signal out of jack or TMI (Tuner, modulator, If) is input to SW IC151.
One of them is selected and output to Pin 14 and them input to Pin 42 of IC301 (LA71004) for video signal process. This signal is
amplified 6dB through sync and peak AGC (Auto Gain Control) and 2Vp-p signal is output Pin 39 through QV/QH Insert circuit.
It is also output to Pin 5 of TMI and line jack.
@REC mode
A. Luminance Signal Processing
The signal input by pin 42 of IC301 is input to AGC AMP and controls sync level. And then, it is input to first LPF (Fc=6MHz) with
limiting its band.
The signal out of the first LPF is separated into luminance and color signal by comb filter.
The separated luminance signal is passed through 3M LPF and pin 29 and buffer, and is input to pin 30.
The level is clamped in clamp circuit, which fixes sync to a specific level in order to prevent drift of FM frequency.
The edge of the clamped signal is emphasized by Detail Enhancer.
The emphasized signal is supplied to Non-Linear Emphasis circuit for improving S/N. Non-Linean Emphasis circuit adjusts amount of
emphasis, that is, makes it smaller in high frequency and vice versa in low frequency.
Main Emphasis emphasizes the high frequency of the adjusted signal again.
W/D clip is conducted in order to prevent undershoot and overshoot which are occurred during the above emphasizing process.
The luminance signal modulated by FM modulator is passed through REC-EQ and then output to pin 14 and then is input to pin 11 of ICA01.
ICA01 makes the luminance signal mixed with the down-converted 629KHz color signal input through pin 10, and also makes them
amplified. Then it supplies the signal through pin 17 in SP or pin 18 in SLP, into head.
Finally the signal comes to be recorded on a tape.
B. Color Signal Processing
The video signal input by pin 42 of IC301 passes through AGC AMP and 6MHz LPF.
Color signal and Y signal are separated by COMB FILTER and the color signal only passes through 3.58 BPF.
ACC AMP automatically controls burst level.
After Burst Emphasis boosts burst signal 6dB, 3.58MHz carrier is input to main conventer and is mixed with 4.21MHz carrier out of
subconverter.
The output is 4.213.58MHz.
The down converted 629KHz color signal, difference between the two frequencies, passes through 1.3MHz LPF, is output by pin 11 of
IC301, is input to pin 10 of ICA01, and is mixed with FM modulated luminance signal input by pin 11.
It is supplied to head and is recorded on a tape.
#PB mode
A. Luminance Signal Processing
The recorded video signal picked up by head, is amplified 60dB by ICA01.
The amplified FM signal is output through pin 10 of ICA01 and input to pin 15 of IC301.
FM EQ and 629KHz trap of IC301 eliminates colors and passes only Y signal, which is output to pin 18 and 20, and is input to pin 22
after phase compensation.
After FM AGC automatically controls playback output tolerence of CH1 and CH2, it is sent to double limitter circuit which removes
AM noise and prevents overmodulation and lets the signal input to FM DEMOD which changes FM signal in record mode to the video
signal.
When it is recorded in main deemphasis through SUB LPF the boosted high frequency is deemphasized, passed through pin 29 and
buffer, and input to pin 30.
After 3MHz LPF's elminating demoduation noise during the above processes, it is input to YNR circuit.
The signal goes to CCD IC302 through pin 34, becomes 1H-delayed there, and then returns to YNR circuit through pin 32.
The 1H-delayed signal is mixed with signals inside of YNR, and as the result noise is eliminated.
Non-Linear Deemphasis plays a role quite opposed to Non-Linear Emphasis in record mode, that is, it deemphasized the high frequency
level emphasized by Non-Linear Emphasis.
Double Noise Canceller reduces minute noise of video signal. After passing through picture control block, it is mixed with color signal.
The mixed signal are output through pin 39, input to pin 18 of ICS01 output through pin 16, and finally supplied to both line jack and
pin 5 of TMI.

B. Color Signal Processing
The FM signal input to pin 11 of IC301, which is originally come from pin 10 of ICA01, passes through 1.3MHz LPF to pass only
629KHz color signal down-converted in record mode.
ACC (Automatic Color Control) AMP stabilized the color signal.
The stabilized signal is input to main converter and mixed with the 4.21MHz signal come from sub-converter.
Its output is 4.21MHz629KHz. The mixed signal is input to 3.58 BPF in order to pass 3.58MHz color signal only.
In Comb Filter, the signal 1H-delayed by CCD IC is added to the original video signal.
During this process, crosstalk between adjacent tracks is eliminated.
The signal out of comb filter is input to Burst Deemphasis which reduces the 6dB boosted burst level (in record mode).
The reduced signal is mixed with luminance signal, and the mixed signal is output to pin 39 of IC301 through Video Amp.

2) Audio circuit
1) Outline
This Audio Circuit use LA71004M A/V one chip IC of Sanyo's. The major feature of this IC is that has a Recording Bias current auto-
control circuit. So it is controlled by circuit automatically to keep consistent Recording current regardless change of head impedance.
Prior IC is used variable resistor to control Recording current passively.
But, variation range of HEAD Impedance has to be limited because of this auto-control circuit.
R/P HEAD = 58 KOHM 15%(f = 70KHz)
A/E HEAD= 34 OHM 20% (f = 70KHz) Serial Type
= 180 OHM 20% (f = 70KHz) Parallel Type
FE HEAD = 80 OHM 15% (f = 70KHz)
It can be devided a parallel and a serial circuit by form of connection of AE Head & FE Head. In case of D/W, we adopt a serial-type
circuit.

$Rec Mode
When Rec "H" signal is applied, Audio Head (Rec) point will be opened (EE & PB: GND) and coil will be oscillated by switching
circuit for High voltage and then starting rec. mode.
Electronic potential difference between Vcc (5V) and pin #3 has to be in 2.0-4.3V to coil oscillate.
In other words, Voltage of pin #3 has to be in 0.7~3.0V p-p.
Specially if Head impedance of R/P and FE is center level, the voltage of Pin #3 has to be 1.85Vp-p consistantly. Pin #3 might be
over control range 0.7~3.0Vp-p when Head impedance is either max. or min. level unless Pin #3 is 1.85Vp-p.
* Head Impedance Variation Owing to the Variation of Pin port 3 Voltage.
As you see from above chart, the voltage of pin # 3 gose up if impedance of FE HEAD is higher and higer, Impedance of R/P
HEAD is lower & lower. DC voltage of Pin #3 includes AC signal components, this means that Auto Bias is operated. If it does not
include AC signal components, means that Auto Bais is not operated. And, pin # 4 is on/off output port of BIAS control TR (Q205)
which sticks in outside.
During Rec. mode VBE (0.7~0.8V) is output and EE & PB mode the voltage is 0.
Audio signal out of pin # 64 through Rec AMP is mixed with Bias signal of 70 KHz components and then record in Head.
And, This signal input to inside of IC, when has 60KHz HPF so filtering Audio signal and pass only 70KHz components, through
Pin # 1.
Then it is compared by comparator (Standard Voltage is 320 mVrms). If it is bigger or smaller than standard Voltage, the compara-
tor Changes the voltage of Pin #3. So that, the BIAS signal which input to pin # 1 is always 320 mVrms. Bias signal has a tolerane
10% (288-352mVrms)
Recording current is decided by BIAS signal of 320mVrms and resistance amount between pin # 64 and 1.
* The way of recording current estimation
BIAS = 320mVrms (Resistance between Pin 64 and Pin 1)
ex) 320mV 1.3K OHM = 246A
In this case, G-level resistor, which has less error has to be used.
Recording current can be controlled by resistance amount.
But if you use too much or too little resistane, it could be cause of bias signal defection.
Usually, the resistance amount between pin # 64 and 1 has to be in 1.0~2.2K OHM
* The variation owing to the variation of resistance between pin 64 and pin 1.
As you see above chart, It is easy to find that the BIAS signal always in a tolerane range regardless of resistance Amt.
And the Change of Recording current is proportional to resistance Amt when a resistance Amt is changed, The voltage of pin #3 is
also changed, you can controll to make 1.85 Vp-p using R 207 and R208. The resistance is lower & lower, the voltage of pin #3
will gose up.
