4th year students at CedarBridge
Academy participate each year in
a Trimester course called Pre-
serving Our Heritage.
This course is taught by Social
Studies teacher, Ms Judith Gill.
The class is designed to encour-
age students to learn about Ber-
mudas heritage and culture as
well as their own personal herit-
age and to find ways to share this
heritage with others.
One of the activities that stu-
dents were required to do this
semester was to build a website
that would share with others
what they had learned about
themselves and Bermudas
culture .
On Thursday 22nd May, as
Chair of the ADHT, I was invit-
ed to be one of the assessors
of the students websites. Oth-
er assessors included teachers
from the school as well as oth-
er students from S4.
The student website presenta-
tions were judged on the fol-
lowing: which was most attrac-
tive, easiest to navigate, most
unique, most informative and
Husband and wife, Joanne and
Quincy Burgess and their two
boys are now living and doing well
in Kenya, Africa.
But during May 2014, Joanne,
whose star is shining bright inter-
nationally, come home for a visit.
Joanne was here for the launch of
the most recent Bermuda Anthol-
ogy as she has a story in this
anthology., as well as for the re-
launch of her first book, Lizard
on the Rock, in e-book format at
the National Library. But in addi-
tion to that Joanne also per-
formed in the Griot Lounge at
Chewstick.
While in Kenya, in addition to her
duties as a mom and teacher,
Joanne is a judge on Sakata, the
Kenyan version of Americas
Dance Crew.
Quincy, Joannes husband is
also making his mark over-
seas. Those privileged to
have Quincy as a friend on
Facebook are able to keep up
with his many projects in
Kenya.
He brought his expertise as a
beekeeper to Kenya and has
now branched out to other
projects that provide solu-
tions to the Kenyan people
and their economy. He has
researched the benefits of the
Moringa seed which is available
locally in tea bags and powder
form.
Most recently he has been shar-
ing the benefits of the breadfruit
plant and has been invited to
speak in many countries on the
African continent, including Ken-
ya, Liberia and Mozambique
about the possibilities that har-
vesting this fruit offer.

A Guide to Slave Route Sites of Memory
A Guide to Slave Route Sites
of Memory in the Caribbean
is a new book to be published by
the Caribbean Studies Press
which will be released shortly.
The editors of this book are
Alissandra Cummins , who was a
speaker at the ADHT Confer-
ence held in Barbados in 2012,
and Dr. Tara Inniss, a lectured in
the History Department at Uni-
versity of the West Indies., Cave
Hill, Campus. The United Na-
tions launched the Slave Route
Project in 1994. The ADHT is an
official site on this route which
takes into account countries
which were included in the
transatlantic, Indian Ocean and
Mediterranean slave trades.
The ADHT Bermuda Founda-
tion was asked to contribute
to this publication and we have
included a number of sites of
memory which are found on
our local trail.
The local sites of memory that
will be included in the book
are Jeffreys Cave in Spittal
Pond, Pilot Darrell Square, the
Sally Bassett Statute, the Enter-
prise Landing Site at Barrs Bay
Park and the Cobbs Hill Method-
ist Church on Midnight Lane in
Warwick.
The book is due to come out
later this year, as 2014 is the 20th
Anniversary of the UNESCO
Slave Route Project. The aim of
the book is to ensure that the
slave trade and Africas cultural
heritage assume their rightful
place in the global heritage of
humanity.
Another young Bermudian doing well in Africa, is Quinton Sherlock. Quinton is studying for his Ph.D. in
Psychology at the University of Ghana in Accra. If you check out his Facebook page you will see that he is
thoroughly enjoying his studies and the experience of being in Africa and Ghana in particular. He is im-
mersing himself in the culture and life of the
area in which he lives.
But in addition to his studies in Africa, Quin-
ton still has his homeland at heart and is
finding ways in which he can share his expe-
rience in the motherland with his country,
even while he works on his Doctorate.
During this summer, Quinton will be pre-
senting two (2) sets of seminars for local
audiences. The first will be weekly seminars
on Pan Africanism (see flyer to left) which
will take place on 23rd and 30th June, also
7th, 14th and 21st July at Southampton
Rangers Sports Club Hall.
The ADHT supports Quinton in his efforts
to educate us by offering 2 free tickets to
each of the lectures. In order to go in the
draw to win these tickets, all you have to do
is to give the correct answers to questions
about in the Diaspora in which the ADHT
has previously held our international confer-
ences: Bermuda, Tanzania, Bahamas, Nova
Scotia in Canada and Barbados. Infor-
mation about the contest to follow.

Quinton will also be speaking during the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Emancipation
Week of activities. On Tuesday, 29th July 2014, Quinton will speak on the topic: Putting Up a Re-
sistance: The Friendly Society Movement in Bermuda 19001950.

Lets share books!!
I love to read good,
hardcopy, paper and
typewritten booksnot
e-books.
With the mention of
Quinton and Ghana, I
remembered that I am
reading: MURDER AT
CAPE THREE POINTSa
book set in Ghana by
Ghanian author - Kwei
Quartey. This book is a
mystery, my favourite
genre for light reading,
and is his 3rd book with
Detective Inspector Dar-
ko Dawson as the lead
investigator.
A great read! Available
at our National Library.
