Rectangle & triangular notches
Aim:
To investigate the pressure and characteristic through different type of notches.

Apparatus:
P6225 Elementary Weirs, P6107 Hook Gauge and Scale

Procedure:
1. The pump was started and the bench regulating valve was opened slowly until the
water level reaches the crest of the weir and the water level was measured to
determine the datum level.
2. The bench regulating valve was adjusted to give the first required head level of
approximately 10mm. The flow rate was measured using the volumetric tank or the
Rota meter. The shape of the nape was observed.
3. The flow was controlled by opening the bench regulating valve to set up heads above
the datum level in steps of approximately 10mm until the regulating valve is fully
open. At each condition measure the flow rate and observe the shape of the nape.
4. The regulating valve was closed, stop the pump and then replace the weir with the
next weir to be tested. Repeat the test procedure.
5. A graph of In Q vs In H was plotted to observe the experiments aim.

Theory:

The discharge of a rectangular notch is given by the formula

Where:

=coefficient of discharge
L=Width of the notch
H=Height of water above

The discharge of triangular notch is given by the formula

)(

Where:
=angle of notch

Discussions:
In this experiment, the flow of the water through the two different notches effect the different
result. As we see the result in the theory, the water flow through the rectangular notch is more
smooth and slower than triangular. From 9mm to 25mm head, the water flow take time 17s to
3s filling up the 3 liter water. Beside that , in the second theory about the triangular notch, the
water is flow more fast and pressing compare to the rectangular notch. From 25mm to 40mm
head, the water take 12s to 3s to filling up the 3 liter water. So the increase in the head cause
increase in the volume flow of the water.
