FACULTY OF EDUCATION

Course Number Title
1st Semester AY 2014-2015

ASSIGNMENT GUIDE

Collaborative Essay (CE)

Date due: 12 September 2014
Percent equivalent of final grade: 15%

Material and Evaluation Criteria

The output requires students to work as a group to complete an essay that
reviews the assigned readings in Unit I, Modules 1-2. Groupings will be posted
on the course site in Week 2. The essay will be rated according to how much it
exhibits knowledge and understanding of critical information. These skills are
in the context of Blooms Taxonomy. The latter shall also be the context of skills
to be tested in the next assignments.

(see http://teaching.uncc.edu/learning-resources/articles-books/best-
practice/goals-objectives/writing-objectives)

Review Format

The group can use any acceptable approach/format for a review paper as long it
is cited in the essay with a link to the online source. The important thing is,
regardless of the chosen format, what the CE needs to demonstrate is
knowledge of the crucial arguments, ideas and concepts in the readings and a
clear understanding of the same. The group can collaborate on beginning with a
theme or a question and organizing the essay into sections and using headings
that demonstrate these two skills in the course of addressing the question. The
group must remember that the purpose of the CE is not to demonstrate research
ability but to develop the foundational skills.

Platform of Collaboration

Each group will develop the CE through the wiki activity that corresponds to the
group. Asynchronous discussion forums shall also be available for group
members to plan and discuss the content and development of the CE. Both the
discussion forum and the wiki shall be inaccessible by 11pm of the designated
day of completion.

Style Guide

The CE should be 1500-1600 words in length, single space, size 12 font, Times
New Roman. The word count excludes bibliography, in text citations, figures and
tables. Citation should follow the APA format (See
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/13/).

Collaborative Presentation (CP)

Date due: 3 October 2014
Percent equivalent of final grade: 20%

Material and Evaluation Criteria

The output requires students to work as a group to complete a
presentation/slideshow that reviews the assigned readings in Unit II, Modules 3-
4. The CP will be rated according to how much it exhibits application of
information and analysis of the same.

The group must identify a question that is of critical interest to a particular
audience (policymakers, business sector, etc.). The content of the CP should be
able to answer the question.

A sample question is:

What major institutional challenges account for the uneven economic
development in ASEAN?

Presentation Pointers

The CP should be 20-22 slides long. The group can use all possible tools to
make the presentation of content effective. Tools include pictures, charts/graphs
or infographics. The group can also opt to embed audio. Voice narration is a plus.

Collaborative Blog (CB)

Date due: 24 October 2014
Percent equivalent of final grade: 25%

Material and Evaluation Criteria

The output requires students to work as a group to publish a blog that reviews
the assigned readings in Unit III. A blog, short for web log, is a site where
information is published online through short posts. Blogs today follow various
formats. The CB will be rated according to how much it exhibits the skill of
synthesis.

The group can develop a blog using any free sites such as
https://wordpress.com/ and http://www.weebly.com/.

Review Format to Apply on the Readings

As a tool for synthesizing the readings in Unit III, the group can use any
acceptable approach/format as long it is cited in the essay with a link to the
online source.

Blog Presentation

In terms of text content, the CB should only be 2000-2100 words in length. The
text can constitute only 1 post or can be distributed across multiple posts. For the
sake of doability given the limited time, the CB should only have text and pictures
(with the proper scholarly citations if applicable). In terms of style, the group can
use all creative tools possible to aid the effective presentation of content.

Collaborative Multi-Media (CM) Online Site

Date due: 13 December 2014
Percent equivalent of final grade: 40%

Material and Evaluation Criteria

The CM requires students to work as a group to publish an interactive online site.
The group should first complete an evaluation essay (25%) using the assigned
readings in Unit IV, which covers Modules 7-9. The essay with a word length of
2500-2600 words will be rated according to how much it exhibits the skill of
evaluation. The latter includes the ability to make judgments on the information
and ideas in the readings. The essay should be organized according to sections
with headings, which will allow the essay to be broken into shorter discrete
posts in the site.

Second, the group shall manage the site my populating it with other materials
such as the three previous collaborative outputs and other useful material like
videos, online articles and e-books. The group can explore incorporating other
features into the site such as simple online polls. The challenge of each group is
to make their site a useful archive for potential users. Similar to the CB project,
groups should use free blog sites to construct their CM.

Evaluation Format to Apply on the Readings

As a tool for evaluating the readings in Unit IV, the group can use any acceptable
approach/format for an evaluation as long it is cited in the essay with a link to the
online source.
