CHOOSING ELECTIVES IN THE BE

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in delays to your graduation in the BE. Read the
information carefully and consult an academic advisor if you have any questions.

This section aims to give some general advice in the selection of what are commonly referred to as
free electives in the Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering dual degree programs.

These electives which do not count towards engineering majors or minors are credited towards the
BE degree or the BE component of the dual degree.

The availability of electives depends on the engineering major and degree you choose to complete
and varies from #0 to #14.

There are also limits on how many electives can be chosen from level 1 courses. Students are
responsible for ensuring that the number of units of electives taken, and the number of those units at
level 1 are within the range permitted by their degree program and any previous credit for electives.

Note that MATH1050 (Mathematical Foundations) counts as a level one elective, but may
only be taken if (a) you have not achieved a HA or better in high school Mathematics C, and
(b) you take it before taking MATH1051 and MATH1052.

Students are encouraged to choose their electives from the Bachelor of Engineering Part B
electives lists for their chosen engineering specialisation, or other engineering specialisations.

You do not need approval for courses on the BE List. This includes courses from the course
lists for other BE majors.

Selection of courses which are not in the BE list require the approval of the Associate
Dean (Academic). This should be organised before enrolling in the elective course.

Students are advised to seek approval at least two weeks before the appropriate cutoff
dates for addition and cancellation of courses. Failure to obtain approval to do a course
as a non-BE elective before week two of the semester in which the course is taken may result
in non-approval of the course towards the BE. It is the students responsibility to secure the
approval prior to taking the course.

There is no guarantee that courses done without prior approval will count towards the
BE. This may affect your semester of graduation.

Students seeking approval of an elective course not on the BE program list and not on
the approved elective list (below) must apply to the Associate Dean (Academic,) EAIT
Faculty using the non-BE electives form .

There is a section on the non-BE electives form where the student must:
o show how the chosen elective maps to the Engineers Australia graduate attributes
and
o explain in 20 words how this choice of course will enhance their preparation for the
engineering profession.

Hand the non-BE electives form to the EAIT Faculty Office in the Hawken Engineering building.

Any changes of the rules and these guidelines needs a recommendation from an academic advisor
(on the form) and BEFORE requesting approval from EAIT faculty.

APPROVED ELECTIVE COURSES

The following courses are approved as BE electives. BE students do not need to seek approval
from the faculty to enrol in the following courses.

These courses will be automatically approved as non-BE electives for credit towards the BE provided
the accrued total number of units of free electives is within the range permitted by their degree
program and any previous credit for free electives.

COURSES FOR WHICH APPROVAL WILL NOT BE GRANTED

The following courses will not be approved or will only be approved in limited circumstances because:

the content of the subject has considerable overlap with material covered in the BE listed
courses, or
the course is an introduction to a technical topic for a non-engineering person, or
the course is totally unrelated to the professional development of an engineer.

This is not to say that the courses are not informative and useful in their own right. You may choose
to do a course which is not approved, but it must be done as a NON-AWARD course for which full
tuition fees are payable upfront and the course will not count for credit towards the BE. Alternatively,
you may choose to enrol in a dual degree and take the desired courses in the non-BE part of the dual
degree.

COURSES FOR WHICH APPROVAL WILL NOT BE GRANTED
Students enrolled in dual programs need to refer to specific guidelines for ECON1050; ECON1310; MGTS1201;
STAT1201 http://www.engineering.uq.edu.au/dual-degrees )
AGRC1009

AGRC1017
Rural Competencies. This course does not map to engineering
graduate attributes and does not enhance the engineering degree in a
professional manner.
Agricultural Mathematics is similar to MATH1040 which is a pre-
requisite for entry to engineering
COMP1900 Information Access and Internet Skills. Students will cover this content
during their Engineering program
ECON1050
Tools of Economic Analysis. This course is incompatible with
MATH1051, a compulsory BE course.
ECON1310 Quantitative Economic & Business Analysis A. Students must
complete the engineering statistics courses STAT2201 and/or
STAT2202
FINM1401
Personal Wealth Management. This course does not map to
engineering graduate attributes and does not enhance the
engineering degree in a professional manner.
HMST1023
Health & Fitness through Diet & Exercise. This course does not map
to engineering graduate attributes and does not enhance the
engineering degree in a professional manner.
Non-English Language
Courses
Students interested in studying a second language are recommended
to enrol in a BE/BA or a concurrent Diploma in Language where they
are subject to the relevant program rules in the BA or the concurrent
Diploma in Language. Native speakers and high school trained
speakers are not permitted to undertake early year courses.
Courses chosen must relate to the professional conduct of
engineering. A stream of courses should be taken to ensure
proficiency in the language.
MATH1040 This is a prerequisite for entry to the BE degree (Equivalent to High
School Maths B) so credit is not available for this course.
MGTS1201
