Quel sentimento della mia infanzia era ancora vivo in me! With a cruise speed of 82 knots, it was too slow to travel the distances I needed to cover for business trips. In addition, my passengers were sick of looking at the back of my neck as we bounced along. It was time to go airplane shopping! While I should have looked at more sen- sible airplanes, my heart won out. In December of last year I purchased serial number 40-019, a SF 260AM that was a retired Italian Air Force trainer. She is a good example of a late model 260. 70 *50 was IRANed 950 hours ago, when she received new wings, an automatic fuel system, and other updates. She was imported by Mike Patlins Airpower International and certified as Experimental Exhibition Category by the FAA. Soon after, she was sold to Bill Burdis, and 70*50 started her transfor- mation into a very capable and exceptio- nal example of the SF 260. The SIAI Marchetti shared hangar space with Bills beastly YAK 3U fighter. Bills experience with the 260 and his other planes came into play when he decided to update the plane to make flying her as enjoyable as possible. After 90 hours of flight time, it was time to bring this girl into the 21st century! Bill stripped out the military avionics, antennas and wiring, which saved 150 pounds in useful load. The experimen- tal category certification allowed for modern, non-TSOed avionics to be used, saving a huge amount of expense and a bit of weight compared to certified elec- tronics. Vincoli cos evaluation just after the First World War. The former was a rather conventional reconnaissance seaplane, already used by US Navy pilots over the Adriatic; the latter was a diminutive seaplane with a Mickey Mouse appearance, usually described with a smile half way betwe- en curiosity and complacency. The M.16 was designed by Eng. Alessandro Tonini (1885-1932), then Technical Director of Nieuport-Macchi. Described as an economical single-seat sport plane and trainer, the M.16 was entered in the Touring Aircraft Competition launched by the National Aviation League (LAN). In order to mini- mize hangarage costs, the rules limited wing span at 6 metres, with engine displacement set at 3.75 litres to reduce fuel consumption. These requirements led to very small aircraft. The M.16 was about four metres long and its empty weight came to just 160 kilograms, justifying the nickname motorcycle of the sky bestowed upon it by the press. It had an all-wood struc- ture, with a rigid truss fuselage that eli- minated bracing wires and the atten- dant rigging. The constant-chord bipla- ne wings carried ailerons only on the stretti produssero aerei davvero minimi. Work proceeded quickly. The general arrangement drawing, which calls for the British 40 HP ABC Gnat two-cylinder engine, is dated July 1, 1919. Static tests were carried out in Varese in September with an airframe fitted with a 30 HP three-cylinder Anzani. Upon reaching a load factor of 10 a strut bowed slightly, but a lack of sufficient sandbags prevented the test from continuing to 11, where the struc- ture was expected to fail. The aircraft had possibly already flown, but the date, place and name of the pilot are now apparently lost. The LAN competition was held between 5-7 July 1920 at Taliedo, the Milan air- field near the present Linate airport. Macchi brought two M.16s with ABC and Anzani engines, which competed against the Breda-Pensuti triplane and the Ricci R.6, the latter arriving from Naples at the very last moment. Three other airplanes the Bergonzi Ardea canard, the Sarri Vampiro triplane and a Gabardini biplane missed the deadli- ne. Il peso a vuoto ture of a dozen M.16 with Italian milita- ry and civil registrations, but nothing is known about the American sales. Despite this, the little plane undoubte- dly came to the attention of the US authorities. The US Navy had already understood the potential effectiveness of an airplane-ship team and was the- refore experimenting with it in every possible form. This included placing abo- ard submarines and destroyers small reconnaissance aircraft requiring mini- mal maintenance, storage space and water deployment and recovery gear. The M.16 floatplane variant offered in 1921 with an Anzani engine fitted the bill perfectly. Advertised by Macchi as the worlds smallest seaplane, the variant was obtained by replacing the wheels of M.16 c/n 3051 with two 2.8 metre floats. The empty weight climbed to 200 kilos and the top speed dropped by 10 kmph, but things remained otherwise pretty much unchanged. The exact route followed for the acqui- sition is unknown, but it should be recal- led that just three years earlier many Americans had gained their wings on various Macchi types at the school on The M.16 could be fitted with a two-cylinder ABC Gnat engine or with the three-cylinder Anzani seen in this photo taken probably at Malpensa airfield. Ensign Charles Hammann flew an M.5 in the action which led his receiving the first Medal of Honor awarded to a US naval aviator and two M.5 had been evaluated in 1917-18 at Hampton Roads Naval Air Station, in Virginia. All this certainly created links which were quickly put to good use when the new requirement cropped up. Against the M.16, or more accurately in parallel to it, the US Navy also tested several other types, all biplanes. The first was designed in-house by the Bureau of Aeronautics, the US Navy aviation branch, and then built by commercial firms in all-wood or aluminium versions which became respectively the Cox- Klemin XS and Martin MS. Both were powered by a three-cylinder Lawrance L4 engine and had rigid bracing rather than wires in order to simplify assembly and disassembly. The Lawrance also powered the J.V. Martin K-IV, a tiny landplane designed in 1917 which reap- peared in 1921 in seaplane form with power doubled to 60 HP to compensate (Martin MS). The Caspar U-1 was acquired from Germany and sported a 60 HP five-cylin- der Siemens engine; more importantly, its impressively modern cantilever wings eliminated struts and rigging altogether. American military programmes were already quite large. The US Navy purcha- sed 20 aircraft in all, including six XS, six MS, three K-IV, two U-1 and, indeed, three M.16 that received serials from A- 6004 to A-6006. All were tested at Hampton Roads (which, by the way, was the same place which in 1926 would see Mario De Bernardi win the Schneider Trophy with his M.39). As the US naval attach in Rome wrote in November 1922, during the last two and a half years this machine has proven itself to be very serviceable and satisfactory, although it was doubtful whether the mere installation of floats would allow it to render efficient service as a sea- plane except in quiet water. The judge- ment applied equally well to the entire group of aircraft, none of which found practical use. Although the idea of carrying mini-air- planes on submarines would resurface periodically up to the Second World War, technological limitations and the harsh saltwater environment conspired against them. Among those who disco- vered this reality was the Italian Navy, which in 1928 sought to carry aircraft on its Fieramosca class submarines, lea- ding Macchi to tender its M.53 monopla- ne. A further indication of the positive impression left by the M.16 came in 1927, when the US Navy purchased a set of M.39 floats for use in assessing the con- version of the Curtiss F6C-4 landplane to floatplane. The biplane flew in Pensacola, but once again failed to enter production. In 1928 the last US Navy posizione fino alla seconda guerra mondiale, i limiti tecnologici e lestrema difficolt dellambiente marino limitarono infatti a lungo le possibilit dei mini-aerei imbarcati su sommergibili. A con- ferma del fatto che anche in America lM.16 non si era comportato male, I-BAGC was one of the very few M.16 on the Italian register. By 1921 Macchi had built 3090 aircraft, as the construction number on the rear fuselage shows. I primi tempi in questa fase ti senti- the Macchino checks by heart. I dont remember checklists on more recent pla- nes, but those I do. One never forgets the first love; especially because we had stu- died the aircraft well during the first phase of instruction which took place at the Alitalia training centre at Fiumicino. During three months of a very intense instruction programme we had been stuf- fed with theory, with a generic link-trai- ner (which could easily have been that of the T-33) and the Viscount 785 simulator; and finally the specific MB-326 aircraft course. After that, we all went to Brindisi for the first flight selection phase. Finished with the checks after engine start, which meant trying the speed brake as well as extending the flaps completely before setting them to the Take/Off (T/O) position, we would bring the engine to 80% to make the aircraft roll from its par- king position. We would release the bra- kes and after a few seconds we would again bring the throttle to idle with a sin- gle-foot braking action to effect a 90 turn and follow the taxiway centre line. At the beginning of the course at this point you would feel as if driving a mon- ster in size and power. During taxiing you would adjust the kneeboard with the procedures, mentally vi alla guida di un mostro di grandezza e di potenza. I had to draw on all the determi- nation I had in me to overcome the various steps which came up, first of which was certainly the solo takeoff. The instructors all came from the Italian Air Force, had vast instructional experience, and were really very good. I still think so today, after almost 40 years with Alitalia, where I became Captain, Senior Instructor and Examiner. The 19th mission conclu- ded the first training phase. Arrivato al parcheggio in prossimit del In fact, out of 45 student pilots in my group, only 18 finished the course with the coveted 3rd Degree licence what we would today call a Commercial Pilot Licence. In any case, the instructor bore a great responsibility and held the fate of a person in his hands. I remember my 19th mission very well. Before climbing aboard the aircraft I was a little tight, then, as soon as I sat down, I forgot about the exam and thought only about my Macchino. During all my flights on that aircraft I had always had the fee- ling - a feeling shared by all the other stu- dents, I might say - that it was not I who piloted, but that the aircraft and I were as one. My instructor was Antonio Usai, a splen- did person and a real gentleman. He was very tough when it was necessary to be hard, and affable in other moments, and unknowingly, he also taught me to be an instructor. During the first part of the mis- sion he never opened his mouth, I just could hear him letting out an occasional grunt, as if disapproving of what I was doing. Then he asked me to perform some manoeuvres and then he unloaded on me. He started to tell me that I could do nothing right, that my manoeuvres were Nanni Pomanti makes is first solo landing on the Brindisi runway. Io ho risposto : A casa mia a Roma. E lui: No! Ho riallaccia- to le cinture, ho rimesso in moto e via substandard and some were downright wrong. Then he took over the controls, descended to one thousand feet, turned the aircraft belly up and pointed to the fields below saying: You see those fields? Thats where you can use your hands and arms, not for piloting an airplane! He then turned the controls back to me with the plane upside down and instructed me to land it. At this point, I brought the plane back from its unusual position, climbed to get into the standard circuit and I landed, thinking that for me the course was over. When I arrived at the par- king apron near our hangar, I turned off the engine, ran the checks, and undid my harness. Just as I was getting ready to leave the plane, I heard his voice with a per la 20^ missione. He said to me, and I answe- red:Home, in Rome. And he:No, you still have to make your first solo! What an emotion! I strapped in again, started the engine, and off I went for the 20th mis- sion. Actually, the 20th was really no big deal. It consisted of a simple flight in the work area and a return to base with the usual circuit, but alone this time, with all that this meant in terms of pride and exci- tement, as well as a certain amount of anxiety. Every little noise seemed amplified a hun- dred fold in our mind and would become suspect. As a precaution, even the sim- plest manoeuvres were performed with a great deal of attention and finesse and rarely would we embark in accentuated manoeuvres. Coming back in, after the downwind checks (landing gear, down; speed brake, up; visual landing gear check, siren mute; light off; flaps T/O), one would perform the base turn and, under the wat- chful eye of the instructor below, inside the mobile control tower, would get on final approach extending the Full flaps and trying to correct for the wind so as to have the proper final approach attitude sotto gli occhi vigili dell'istruttore in biga, si impostava il finale mettendo i Full flaps e cercando di correggere bene il vento in modo da presentarsi correttamente in corto e non sbagliare la richiamata. Anzich il bagno forzato nella and not make an error on the flare. Fortunately, Brindisi had, and still has, two angled runways (14-32 and 05-23), giving the advantage of always flying with a headwind. The primary runway was 32, which meant that the final turn was prac- tically all over water, without visual ter- rain reference points. In this case the use of the stopwatch was essential, started abeam of the runway threshold. But what really saved us was an oil tanker moored in port (there was always one at that dock) and it coincided perfectly with the start of the base turn, so that if one for- got to turn on the stopwatch it was still possible to set up the base turn correctly. Once, the ship was away for four days, and some had to go around again because of a missed base turn, and as a consequen- ce set up final incorrectly. The first solo flight could not go unnoti- ced; in fact it absolutely had to be cele- brated in some way by the colleagues. At the Lecce Air Force Flight School the tra- dition contemplated a forced bath i.e., being dunked by colleagues in the foun- tain of the base. At Brindisi the ritual involved the cutting of hair. The classma- tes would shave your hair only partially, thereby forcing you to go to a barber to complete the work and come out with a more dignified appearance, if one can say that. In my case, they cut all the hair on the back of my head and a little on top. As a result, I looked normal from the front and absolutely horrible from the side. But it was a clipping which made us proud, as it meant that we had overcome an impor- tant phase in our lives. Eventually it was the turn of Tony Falcone (also now a reti- red Alitalia Captain), the handsome guy of the course whom we all envied on The training syllabus did not include flying in pairs, which was reserved for impromptu meetings in the skies over Brindisi. The joke on him, therefore, took on a comple- tely different connotation and was the subject of a five-column article in the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno newspaper, an article which I still keep among my best memories of that period of my life. Shaved like a Mohican, stripped and then dressed up in a sack with openings for the head and arms, and obscene phrases (which I will spare you) written on the front and back, he was taken barefoot and with a rope around his neck to Piazza Vittoria, Brindisis main square, where he was tied to a post. A movie camera filmed the surprise of the passers-by who stop- ped to see this strange individual, while other student pilots snapped lots of pho- tos. The gathered crowd finally attracted the attention of a policeman who took the poor fellow to the police station along with the other course members, but without taking the rope from around his neck. After the situation had been explai- ned, the Franciscan habit removed and a normal set of clothes put on, we made our way back to the airport with Tony, but not before having received a stern dres- sing-down by the police officers. Once we passed the 20th mission, the course proceeded rapidly because the entire instructional period had to be com- aeroporto non senza aver subito una ramanzina da parte dei funzionari di Polizia. At the 29th mission there was a practical exam for the 1st Degree Licence, followed by another at the 58th mission for the 2nd Degree Licence (todays Private Pilot Licence). At this point, we returned to Fiumicino for another five- month trai- ning period, which once again consisted of theory, link-trainer activities, and the Viscount 785 simulator, and finished with the theoretical exam for the 1st and 2nd licences. We then went back to Brindisi for a little more than a month where we flew another 23 missions primarily devoted to navigation. In contrast with the Air Force Flying School syllabus we did not fly in pairs nor in formation, and aerobatics were limited to familiarising with basic aerobatic figures to demonstrate comple- te control of the aircraft in unusual posi- tions. It goes without saying that once in a while we would meet in the air, at which point the mission ended with some aero- batics in pairs, something at which our instructors were particularly good. At the 81st mission we underwent a prac- tical exam for the 3rd Degree Licence; but the course was by no means over. We went back to the Alitalia Training Centre at Fiumicino once again, where we went through three more months of lessons to prepare for the 3rd Degree theoretical exam; the Navigation Officer, 2nd class exam; and the English radio communica- tions exam. The 9th course had begun in January 1966 and ended in March 1967. As I write I am again leafing through my flight log of that period, and I realize that in tutte le sue fasi, una grande cavalcata di 15 mesi fortunatamente intervallata da bellissimi periodi di volo che alla fine riuscivano a portare ad un eccellente livello addestrativo anche coloro che, come me, non avevano precedenti espe- rienze aviatorie. Infatti poco dopo l'Alitalia abbandon questi corsi preferendo cedere i velivoli all'AM e ritirare un prodotto finito. Resta il ricordo di quella che io considero una vera e propria epopea e l'esperienza professionale pi bella della mia vita anche se ho volato con questa macchina solo 100 ore di volo e fatto 172 atterrag- gi, come ben riporta il mio fedele libret- to, quello in pelle marrone con le scritte in oro per intenderci, che quelli della mia et conoscono bene. it was an extremely intense course in all its phases, a great cavalcade lasting 15 months, fortunately broken up by beauti- ful flying periods which, in the end, brought up to a high level of competence even those who, like myself, had entered it devoid of all flying experience. My professional life has been a very lucky one. There are not many who have beco- me airline pilots training on a civilianized version of a military jet. In fact, not too much later, Alitalia shut down its Brindisi school, turned over its MB.326D to the Air Force, which in turn provided it with well- trained pilots. What remains is the memo- ry of what I consider a true epic, and the best professional experience of my life, even though I had only 100 flight hours and 172 landings in this plane, dutifully recorded in my faithful logbook, the one with the brown leather cover with gold lettering that pilots of my generation know so well. Italy-Israel meeting AVIATION UPDATE NOTIZIE DAL MONDO DELLAVIAZIONE Incontro Italia-Israele O n March 25 Never give up, the detailed biography of Ermanno Bazzocchi, was presented at Villa Recalcati, the splendid seat of the Varese Province. In a hall crowded with local officials, Aermacchi personnel, test pilots and Bazzocchi family members, Province President Engineer Dario Galli underscored the aeronautical vocation of Varese and its surrounding areas, as well as the tangible support the Province gave the book from the very beginning. Giulio Valdonio, who worked closely with Bazzocchi, traced a deeply penetrating portrait of the father of the Aermacchi MB.326 and the MB.339 trainers who, for half a century, was the companys charismatic reference figure, also emphasizing his character as innovator and doer. Aviation historian Gregory Alegi underlined the value of the book, particularly in explaining what-if scenario which might have seen Aermacchi abandon airplanes for motorcycles. A small display of airplane models designed and built by Bazzocchi during his long career had been set up in the foyer. An excerpt of this book, based largely on unpublished sources made available to authors Paolo Mezzanotte and Sandro Neviani by the Bazzocchi family, was printed in AMW-16. Finmeccanica, a leading sponsor of the new museum, underscored its role by bringing to Piazza del Duomo three milestones in Italian aviation history: the Ansaldo SVA 10 owned by Alenia Aeronautica, the Bell 47G which marked the debut of Agusta in the helicopter business and of course the M.67 Schneider racer. Its present beautiful condition is due to the restoration sponsored by Alenia Aermacchi and MBDA in 2003 for the centennial of the first flight of the Wright brothers.
