Elections keep India democracy alive, but its a tenuous situation says Jamie Chandler
a political scientist at Hunter college in New york. its democracy requires much
improvement particularly in strengthening government institutions, curtailing repression and
lowering income inequality if these trends continue, instability could put democracy in
jeopardy. in a book entitled Beyond a Billion Ballots, author VinaySahasrabudhe boldly
states that democracy is fragile and decaying the country. Democracy in India is more
impressive in form than substance he said People no longer believe that politicians pursue
politics for some great cause Part of the problem lies with deeply entrenched and
unmovable leadership in the top rungs of party hierarchies. Indeed of the 50 of officially
recognized political parties operating in India, only the right wing Nationalist BJP and two for
left parties, the communist party of India (CPI)and the Communist Party of India _Marxist (CPI

Passage 1
Education if looked at beyond its conventional boundaries, form the very essence of al our
action. What we do is what we have learned either through instruction or through observation
and assimilation. When we are not actively learning, our mind is always processing new
information or trying to analyze the similarities as well as they tiny nuances which make the
topic stand out or seem different. If that is the case then the mind definitely holds the
potential to learn more however it is we who stop over selves from expanding the horizons of
our knowledge with self-doubt or other social, emotional or economic constraints while most
feel that education is a necessity, they tend to use it as a tool for reaching a specific target or
personal mark, not wanting to seek higher education thereafter, Nonetheless the importance
of education in society is indispensable and cohering which is why society and knowledge
cannot ever be separated into two distinct entities. Receiving a good education helps make
you strong enough to look after yours self in any given situation. It keep you aware of your

Passage 2
Monsanto has begun the process for introducing another genetically modified crop into
India, its proprietary maize variety called Roundup ready com. The Governments review
committee on genetic manipulation (RCGM) has given permission to Monsanto to bring in
breeding material and star its work. Roundup ready com is a herbicide tolerant maize variety
which offers no advantages to the Indian farmer with Farmer respect to yield, no protection
against disease, not ability to tolerate saline soils, no drought tolerance and no improvement
in the quality of the grain , to mention a few of the reasons why new varieties are introduced.
Monsantos herbicide tolerant maize is a very which contains genes that will allow it to
tolerate the poisons contained in the herbicide roundup. When sprayed it will kill all the other
plants which become weeds in the field.
Round is a herbicide (a chemical used to kill weeds )which also belongs to Monsanto,
which until very recently held the patent on it. This means that the farmer has to buy the
package, the roundup ready variety and its matched herbicide, roundup since one is
dependent on the other Herbicide tolerance is a clever strategy developed for the company,
not the farmer it allows Monsanto to make a double killing, first on the seed and then on the
herbicide tolerant crops to the extent that, globally, herbicide tolerance is the single most

commonly prevalent trait in the cultivation of GM Crops the other being insect resistance,
that is BT cotton.
Herbicide tolerance was developed as atria in crops to address the problem of
agriculture in industrial countries where landholdings run into a few thousand acres and
where practically no labour is available for farm operations. with just two to fiver per cent of
the population in farming, agriculture is largely mechanized. Weed control therefore, cannot
be done by hand. The preferred way of controlling weeds in these countries is by aerial
spraying which is a wistful and ecologically destructive method.
In developing countries, agricultural holdings are small and densely packed. Fields
growing different crops neighbor one another and agricultural fields are set within or border
natural ecosystems with natural biodiversity. So if fields of other crops and even borders of
natural vegetation or the forest edge flanked a field growing Monsantos Roundup herbicide
would affect the neighboring crops and natural vegetation and kill them.
31. Why has Monsanto decided to introduced the herbicide resistant variety of maize in
India?
(a) To Kill the other crops in the vicinity of the maize
(b)To allow Monsanto to run tests real time in natural conditions.
(c) To allow Monsanto to validate its patient on a global scale.
(d)To facilitate the process of maximizing Monsantos monetary gains
32. With reference to the passage, consider the following statements?
(1) Roundup ready maize is an essential requirement in Indi because the country is facing
serious problem of
herbicide resistance
(2)Mechanization of farming in industrial countries has spawned the issue of weed control
(3)RCGM is corrupt institution
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only
(b) 2 only
(c) 3 only
(4) 1,2 and 3
33. According to the passage, which of the following can be classified s a weed?
(a) Other plants growing in the same field in which roundup ready corn is planted
(b) Insect resistant Bt cotton
(c) A pesticide resistant strain of maize
(d) All of the above
34. Why is herbicide tolerance the single most prevalent trait in the cultivation of GM
Crops ?
(a) It was developed as a trait to address the problem of agriculture in developing countries
(b) The uncontrolled growth of weds is a universal phenomenon.
(c) Monsanto is marketing herbicide resistant crops worldwide.
(d) Herbicidal spray are the most effective means of controlling weeds.
35. How would ecosystems in developing countries be affected if Roundup ready maize is
introduced therein?
(a) It will blur the boundaries between natural vegetation and domesticated crops.
(b) It will severely affect floral diversity in the vicinity.
(c) It will induce herbicide resistance in the neighboring crops
(d) It will poison the soil, causing the other crops to experience slowed growth.
36. What are the reasons for the introduction of new varieties of crops into a country?
1. Ability t cross breed with indigenous (local) varieties.
2. Tolerance to sating soil
conditions.
3. Protection against fungal infections.
Which of the statement give above is /are correct?
(a) 1,2 and 3

Economic disparity have risen more from 2007 to 2010 then in the preceding 12 years.

financial crisis, which it says is Squeezing income and putting pressure on inequality and
poverty.

the economic downturn the economies of china and India grew above the OECD average over
the past decade and are continuing to develop. Though these emerging economics have
reduced levels of poverty , they have also seen increased levls of income inequality.

Passage 1
The idea or rewriting history is under a cloud. From the discussion that has followed
the ICHR move to stop the publications of the towards Freedom project volumes and the
NECERT directive deleting passages from existing school text books the very notion of
rewriting has tragically emerged tainted as it inevitably means the play of hidden hands,
unrevealed agendas and manipulating minds. For historians, rewriting is a creative act, it its
the way history as a mode of knowledge develops. In developing new perspectives, historians
critique dominant frame works - their enclosing limits and repressions, their silences and
erasures and rework accepted notions of history,
The past does not come to us with a unitary truth embedded within it; the facts that
historian mine do not ever speak in unison. As our perspectives as change, we look at the
past in new ways reinterpret event, discover new meaning within them and pose new
questions that count not even be formulated with the limits of earlier frameworks of analysis
So historians tell different stories of the same past, refigure evidence in divers ways in the at
of rewriting history an act that enriches our conception of the past.
The act of rewriting history is not objectionable. But all forms of rewriting are not the
same. If rewriting is o integral to the growth of historical knowledge, we need to continuously
examine the nature of rewriting, the assumptions underlie the argument the questions that
are posed, the mode in which knowledge is authenticated and the structure of the story that
is elaborated. In scrutinizing the process we need to differentiate between ways of rewriting
that are to differentiate between ways of rewriting that are legitimate and productive and
those tat are problematic and intellectually unacceptable.
It is through practice of rewriting that historians of Inda have continuously rethought
their notions of the past. History in India began the modern career implicated in projects of
colonial knowledge. And post colonial knowledge. And pos colonial subjects. Just as much as
historians have struggled against this legacy - alegacy embedded in the sources that were
collected and stored the institutions of research that were built up and the colonial
conceptions of history that became part of our commonsense.
