Objective

During this 5-day summer school, the students will receive an

in-depth introduction to the marine CSEM method and its
application to oil & gas exploration. The goal is to give students the
opportunity to learn about a geophysical method that has
experienced very fast industry development over the last 12 years,
but so far has received very little attention in university study
programs and books for students. The summer school will be
taught by industry leading experts from EMGS in an interactive
classroom setting. The school program is designed to cover a
broad spectrum of topics such as the physics of CSEM, data
acquisition, processing, modeling, inversion and interpretation.
Course content
Basic concepts and the physics of CSEM
CSEM acquisition
CSEM data processing
CSEM modeling
CSEM inversion
CSEM interpretation and case studies
Computer lab
See the attached schedule for details.
Instructors
Sbastien de la Kethulle de Ryhove, PhD
(Senior Scientist, EMGS Research Group)
Daniel Shantsev, PhD
(Senior Scientist, EMGS Research Group;
Adjunct Professor at University of Oslo)
Francisco Javier Parga Garca
(Geophysicist, EMGS Villahermosa)
Gabriela Tllez Velazquez
(Exploration Advisor, EMGS Villahermosa)

Target group
The summer school program is aimed at last-year undergraduate
level (BSc) and graduate level (MSc or PhD) Geophysics students.
The students are selected by the participating universities.
Approximately 5 students will be accepted from each institute.
This is to limit the class size and ensure an interactive learning
experience. It is suggested that the students are accompanied
by one professor from their respective institute/faculty.

Pre-requisites
No prior knowledge of CSEM is required. The participating
students should have a good understanding of physics and
applied mathematics. Basic knowledge of petroleum geology
would be benecial.
The students are expected to be comfortable with the use of
English language.
Language
The principal language of the lectures and teaching material will
be English. Three of the instructors are Spanish speaking and
can provide language support as needed.
Dates
15 September 2014
Location
The summer school will be hosted by IPN, Escuela Superior de
Ingeniera y Arquitectura Ticomn ESIA.
Cost
EMGS will cover costs for travel, board and accommodation for
all participants from outside Mexico City. The school will be free
of charge for all participants.

Sbastien de la Kethulle de Ryhove, PhD
Senior Scientist, EMGS Research Group
Sbastien received the MSc degree from the Universit
Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, in 2002 and the PhD degree
from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,
Trondheim, Norway, in 2007, both in Electrical Engineering.
In 2003 he was at the Nippon Telephone and Telegraph (NTT)
Communication Science Laboratories, Kyoto, Japan, where he
worked on separation of mixtures of speech. He has three years
experience performing research on several aspects of marine
controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) methods including
CSEM data processing, modeling and inversion. He is currently
working as a Senior Scientist at EMGS in Norway.
Daniel Shantsev, PhD
Senior Scientist, EMGS Research Group
Adjunct Professor, University of Oslo
Daniel received the MSc degree in Solid State Physics from the
St. Petersburg State Technical University, Russia, in 1994 and
the PhD degree in Physics from the Ioffe Physico-Technical
Institute, Russia, in 1997.
He has ten years of research experience in solid state physics
with focus on electrodynamics of superconductors, magneto-
optical imaging and inversion, mostly at the University of Oslo,
Norway. In 2007, he joined EMGS in Norway as a Senior Scientist
where he is instrumental to developing and maintaining EMGS
industry leading 3D controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM)
modeling capabilities. Since 2010, he also holds an Adjunct
Professor position at the Physics Department of the University of
Oslo. His current research focuses on CSEM in shallow water and
areas of complicated bathymetry.
Francisco Javier Parga Garca
Geophysicist, EMGS Villahermosa
Francisco holds a Physics degree (2008), specialized in solid
state physics, from the Universidad de las Amricas-Puebla.
He has 6 years of experience in the oil business. He worked for
four years in Schlumberger as a borehole geophysicist doing
design, processing and interpretations of VSPs on vertical and
deviated wells as well as analysis of hydraulic fractures with
microseismic monitoring on real time.
He joined EMGS on 2012, since then he has been doing
interpretation and integration of CSEM with seismic and well logs
data, adjusting resistivity models to the geological backgrounds
as an advance Petrel user and CSEM data modeling and
inversion.
Gabriela Tellez Velazquez
Exploration Advisor, EMGS Villahermosa
Gabriela is a Geophysicist from IPN. She has experience on
interpretation in areas as prospects identication, initial
characterization of reservoirs, well designs and salt
interpretation for depth migration models.
She has been working on EMGS as an exploration advisor in
Mxico helping on the interpretation integration for CSEM data
on the deep waters of the Gulf of Mxico.
