Loadmaster programme, launched in November
1996. Aircraft leasing company GATX has taken
over the assets of both the Thrush agricultural air-
craft product line and the Loadmaster turboprop
freighter development programme after foreclosing
on the firm's assets at a bankruptcy auction in
August. GATX had loaned Ayres $15 million in 1998
to develop the Loadmaster. Five potential bidders
have emerged for all the assets, and three more are
interested in the Thrush line. Oneburden had been
the Ayres' loss-making Czech subsidiary Let
Kunovice, which itself filed for bankruptcy last year.
LM-200 Loadmaster
The LM200 started with an order for 100 cargo ver-
sions from package carrier FedEx Express, and at
time of bankruptcy, the company held 27 orders for
the Loadmaster from customers other than FedEx.
In addition to the cargo version, Ayres planned to
market both a 19-seat regional configuration and a
34-seat high density version of the Loadmaster. The
aircraft is a high-winged design, powered by two
HTEC (Allied Signal /Allison) CTP-800 turboshaft
engine modules rotating a single propeller.

Avro RJ/RJX
The Avro RJ family was developed from the BAe
146 and offered in three sizes: the 70/82-seat RJ70,
85/100-seat RJ85 and 100/128-
seatRJ100/RJ115. Main changes from the 146
include introduction o/f Honeywell LF507 engines
and digital avionics. The stretched RJ85 was flown
in March 1992 and offers 85 seats (five-abreast) or
100 seats (six-abreast). A further stretched model,
the RJ100, offers seating for 100 or 112, respec-
tively.
The first production Avro, an RJ85, was delivered
to Crossair in April 1993. The RJ70 first flown in July
1992, has derated LF507s and carries 70 passen-
gers in a five-abreast layout, or 82 six-abreast.
Series production of the RJ70 has ceased, with air-
craft available to order only.
BAE launched an upgraded, re-engined version,
the RJX, in March 2000. Equipped with the
Honeywell AS977 turbofan, the RJX offers 17%
extra range, 5% more climb thrust, 15% lower fuel
consumption and 20% lower overall direct engine
maintenance costs. As with the earlier version,
three sizes are offered: the RJX-70, -85 and -100.
The first example, an RJX-85, flew on 28 April
and has recently undertaken extensive hot-and-cold
testing in the Americas. Certification is due early
next year, with deliveries beginning to launch cus-
tomer British European in the second quarter.
Production
Assembly is performed at BAE's Woodford plant. To
maximise profitability, BAE is committed to building
only 18 aircraft per year, although there is scope to
increase this to 24.

BAe 146
First flown in September 1981, the four-engined
BAe 146-100 entered service in May 1983 with
Dan-Air of the UK. Production ceased in 1993 after
219 of the AlliedSignal (now Honeywell, formerly
Textron Lycoming) ALF502-powered aircraft had
been delivered. The 146 was made in three fuse-
lage lengths (-100, -200 and -300) and BAe also
developed a freighter version, the "QT".
BAE Systems is developing cockpit upgrades for
the 146 that will enhance its operational capabilities
and keep it compliant with new regulations.
Although the programme has not been finalised,
BAE is offering upgrades including Category III low-
visibility landing capability; Honeywell enhanced
ground proximity warning system; reduced vertical
separation minima equipment; new fibre optic and
flat-panel flightdeck displays.
Air circulation modifications will be required, fol-
lowing the Australian Civil Aviation Safety
Authority's threat to ground Ansett's BAE 146 fleet
after a report found that that fumes caused health
problems.
