Section 3

For flanges and clamped hub connections to reliably contain wellbore pressure the
flange faces must remain in contact at all times. If the environmental forces exceed the
clamping force of the studs (or the clamp for a clamped connection) a separation of the
flange faces will occur with the resulting loss of containment (a leak). Therefore,
adequate torque must be applied to the connection to achieve the desired design
strength of the connection. On the other hand, excessive torque applied to a flange
stud can cause thread distortion and damage. This will reduce the studs strength.
Reduced stud strength also translates into premature loss of clamping force and flange
face separation under load. For this reason correct torque must be applied to
connection studs and nuts to achieve maximum connection strength.

NOTES :
(1) The 4 bolt clamp style only is considered in this bulletin. The 2 bolt clamp is not API which is not
meant to infer that it is an inadequate design.
(2) This is a Cooper (Cameron Iron) part number.
(3) Moly paste means a lubricant with 70% molybdenum disulfide similar to TS-70, NSW #503 or
FEL-PRO #670. The coefficient of friction is 0.07.
