Should everybody go to the college? Are Do all the students have the eager and
desire to learn? Are Do all the students haveing the hungry hearts? These are just of
some of the questions that Mark Edmondson states in his essay Educations Hungry
Hearts. In this article, Edmondson illustrates the most vital things that make anyone to
be well taught in life and as a college student (521). He believes that not everyone
deserves to go to college and the ones who truly worth to go to college are the ones
who have the energy and passions to learn (521). He states that college is not a good
investment for the people who are going to be a car mechanic and home health care
aide because its not the right way to spend their money; however, Mark Edmundson
says its a good investment for the students that have a hungry hearts (521). In Carlo
Rotella essay No, it doesnt matter what you majored in. In this article, Carlo explains
the problems that college students may face after gradating from college (516). Rotella
states that college and tertiary education in this day and age is an irreducible minimum
and requirement that these times have forced the people to have (516). Also, he says in
order for a person to join the increasingly competitive job market and earn a decent
salary and subsequently join the middle class, one must have a college education as a
basis (516). He assumes that this scramble to join the colleges and make a name for
oneself have made the cost of college education to increase, which would become a
social problem (516). Furthermore, he thinks this is notwithstanding the current
economic crisis and conditions, which have since made the situation more difficult for
the public institutions even as they increase their charges of cost of college degrees

nevertheless, the weaknesses in their argument were in repressing facts and logic
evidence.
The two authors use various techniques and approach to present their case and
try to make an impression on the reader. Rotella fundamentally uses ethos to provide
an insight into his view on the matter. This approach is used because he uses a factual
method to appeal to the reader to understand that in the United States, the job market is
influenced more by the desire of employers to use a college degree to separate the
middle class from the upper class. Thus, he utilizes the technique of realism as a means
of presenting his view and gets the reader to become aware of the point he has in mind
by merely stating and reinforcing what actually exists. Ethos is mainly about presenting
the guiding principles and ideals that characterize a nation or community. Therefore,
Carlo Rotella presents his views by stating what the job markets look like and how it
influences and affects the worth of college education.
Pathos and ethos are significantly present in the argument of Mark Edmondson.
This approach is preferred because Mark Edmondson appears to present a view that is
personalized. He starts by presenting the concept of "hungry hearts" that constitutes his
unique worldview that he seeks to get the reader to understand and believe. This views
ias not the same as conventional views and theories as Rotella presents in his
arguments. Thus, Edmondson goes on to present important ideas that are vital in
convincing the reader that college degrees are worth what a person makes it worth to
him or her.

foundation for the presentation of his subjective view of the concept. He, therefore,
argues about students who will never apply their degree study and its components on
the job. He presents observations of his thirty-five years of teaching in institutions of
higher learning, and this helps him to convince the reader of which student is "hungry"
and which one is not. This form of communication is also another subjective view that
he uses pathos and ethos to present to the reader. He then gives an example that
consolidates his worldview and gets the reader to accept his case by building credibility
and trying to change the way the reader thinks about the realities that exist in America.
Carlo Rotella presents the facts as they are. He presents objective information
steeped in empirical observations. And an objective thinker is likely to accept that as the
truth and hence, the reality. On the other hand, Mark Edmondson uses a more powerful
emotional tool, which includes ethos and pathos to present his personal sentiments and
views and tries to get the reader to accept it as the truth by using various tools that
appeal to the reader of his article. This effect causes him to win some degree of
credibility, and this kind of credibility gets him to change the worldview of the reader.
The approach used by Mark Edmondson first gets the audience to disregard the reality
or the ethos of the situation and then get them to accept his subjective theories, through
his personal observations and made-up examples.
