Text for the video Basic life support

Narrator: This video will demonstrate the principles of Basic Life Support.
In any first aid situation you should follow D-R--B-!-D.
D-R--B-!-D will help you to prioritise your actions and enhance the chances of survival for
the casualty.
The si" #asic steps are:
Dan$er% Response% irway% Breathin$% !ompression% Defi#rillation.
&usic
!hec' for dan$er.
&usic
(nsure that the area is safe and free from any ha)ards or ris's for you and others.
!hec' Response. ssess the casualty*s response usin$ a ver#al and touch stimuli.
+oman: !an you hear me, !an you s-uee)e my hand,
Narrator: If the casualty does not respond% immediately call for help.
+here you can% have someone else call ... for help and also as' to access a defi#rillator if
one is availa#le.
Remem#er - in any emer$ency situation% every second counts.
s' the operator for the am#ulance service.
+hen you are connected to the am#ulance service% provide all information includin$ the type
of emer$ency and e"act location.
Never han$ up until the operator instructs you to do so.
Ne"t assess the casualty*s airway.
Tilt the head #ac'% $ently lift the chin and loo' for any visi#le si$ns of forei$n material such as
#lood or vomit in or around the mouth and nose.
If the airway is clear% leave the casualty on their #ac' and chec' for #reathin$.
/owever% if the airway is o#structed% immediately roll the casualty into the recovery position.

To do this% 'neel #eside the casualty.
0lace the casualty*s furthest arm at 1. de$rees to their #ody.
0lace the other arm across their chest with the hand restin$ hi$h on the opposite shoulder.
Raise the casualty*s 'nee that is closest to you.
0lace one of your hands as a support #eneath the head and nec' of the casualty and your
other hand a$ainst the raised le$.

2ently roll the casualty away from you onto their side.
0osition the casualty*s head sli$htly downwards towards the $round to allow forei$n matter to
drain.
It may #e necessary to use the fin$er sweep to remove forei$n materials.

+hen the airway is clear% tilt the head #ac'% $ently lift the chin.
Loo'% listen and feel for normal #reathin$.
If there is no normal #reathin$% place the casualty onto their #ac' and commence with two
rescue #reaths.

3se personal protective e-uipment% such as face shields and $loves% where availa#le.
&usic
!hec' for si$ns of life.
Si$ns of life include: !onsciousness% Response% &ovement% Normal #reathin$.
If there are no si$ns of life% commence !0R.

!0R is: !ardio 0ulmonary Resuscitation
!0R is the techni-ue of chest compressions com#ined with rescue #reathin$.
The purpose of !0R is to maintain a sufficient flow of o"y$en to the #rain.
0lace the heel of your lower hand directly over the centre of the chest.
3sin$ two-handed pressure on the chest% compress to one third the depth of the chest% and at
a rate of 4. compressions to two rescue #reaths.

If there is more than one first aider% ensure that the am#ulance has #een called and access a
defi#rillator if one is availa#le.
Then chan$e roles in performin$ !0R every 5 minutes to avoid fati$ue.

!ontinue performin$ !0R until medical help is ready to ta'e over.

In some instances an (D% or utomated ("ternal Defi#rillator% may #e availa#le.
n (D administers an electric shoc' and can restore the electrical rhythm of the heart.
ttach the defi#rillator to the casualty as -uic'ly as possi#le and follow it*s ver#al instructions.
(arly defi#rillation increases a casualty*s chance of survival in cardiac arrest.

+hile each unit may have some operatin$ variations% the process will #e similar.
The followin$ demonstration is meant as a $uide only - chec' each unit for specific operatin$
instructions.
0ull the (D machine*s openin$ handle.

Remove o#structin$ clothin$ from the casualty*s chest.
&usic
Select the pads and peel away the plastic liners.
&usic
0lace the pads on the chest of the casualty.
6or adults% place one pad on the top ri$ht of their chest wall and the other on the lower left of
the chest wall.
7nce the pads are in place the machine will analyse the casualty*s heart condition and advise
whether an electric shoc' is re-uired.
+hile the caution li$ht is on and the machine is analysin$% it is important that you do not touch
the casualty.
Defi#rillator: No-one should touch the patient - analysin$.
Narrator: If re-uired you will need to administer a shoc'.
To do this press the shoc' #utton when directed to do so.
Do not touch the casualty whilst administerin$ the shoc' or you will also receive an electric
shoc'8
Defi#rillator: Shoc' advise stay clear of patient% press the flashin$ oran$e #utton now.
Narrator: $ain do not touch the casualty whilst administerin$ the shoc' or you will also
receive an electric shoc'8
+hen the defi#rillator recommends no further shoc' delivery% monitor for si$ns of life.
If re-uired% continue !0R until medical help arrives.
