ABSTRACT
Tenriawaru Taslim.2012. The Effectiveness of Small Group Discussion based on Gender to Improve The Students Ability in Speaking English.Thesis. Departement of English, Faculty of Language and Literature, State University of Makassar.(Supervised by Syarifuddin Dollah and Kaimuddin). The objective of the research is to find out whether or not the implementation of small group discussion based on gender significantly improves students speaking ability. The population of this research was the twelfth year students of SMA Model Negeri 2 Watampone, academic year 2012/2013. The method used in this research was quasi experimental design that involved two classes as sample which were given different treatment. Sample of this research was taken by using cluster random sampling technique; there were 60 students, 30 students in class Exact 1 as experimental group and 30 students in class Exact 2 as control group. Furthermore, in collecting data, the researcher used speaking test, pretest and posttest. The mean score of pretest in experimental group is 45 and mean score of posttest is 71.48. While the mean score of pretest in control group is 44.63 and mean score of posttest is 52.01. it can be concluded that the students in experimental group make progress and better than the students in control group. It also proved by the result of the t-test value; the result of the t-test value in pretest is smaller than t-table (0.136 < 2.021) and the result of the t-test value in posttest is greater than t-table (7.517> 2.021). It is indicated that there is significant difference of the students speaking ability after the implementation of small group discussion based on gender.
