Basic phone users migrating to Android

Findings from the State of the Android Mobile Web report by Opera
Software

India is home to the largest population of
Opera Mini users in the world. It is also
home to the fastest-growing
smartphones market in the world. With a
plethora of options available at attractive
prices, more and more Indian Opera
Mini users are now upgrading to
smartphones.

The Opera Mini user base in India
increased by 25% over the past year,
while the smartphone user base surged
by 120%. Leading the pack is the
Android smartphones user base, which increased by an impressive 160%.

In our latest State of the Android Mobile Web report, we decided to take a closer look at
Opera Mini users on Android - the types of devices they are using and what keeps them
busy online.


Highlights from the State of the Android Mobile Web report:

Android and Java users almost equally split
Opera Mini is now used by more smartphone users than basic Java phone users. Out of
all Opera Mini users, 47 % are now on smartphones. Android and Java are the two most
used mobile operating systems. According to our statistics they are on an almost equal
footing, with user bases of 44% and 45% respectively. This is a huge jump from last
year, when Android users stood at 21%, while Java users claimed 70% of the total
Opera Mini user pie.

Micromax overtakes Samsung
A breakdown of the top 100 handsets shows that Micromax has the biggest share
(30%) in this category, followed by Samsung (25%). Last year Samsung was the leader
in this category. However, its interesting to note that all the top 10 Android handsets
used by Opera Mini users are Samsung.


Samsung users browse more
Samsung users consume more data and view more webpages compared to other
users. In all, 56% of data consumed on the top 100 Android devices is by Samsung
users, followed by Micromax users at 21%, according to Opera Mini statistics. Looking
at all page views, 59% are viewed by Samsung users, followed by Micromax users at
20%.

Money matters
There are 77% of Opera Mini users on Android, accessing the web from phones that
cost Rs 10,000 and under. Ultra-economical handsets priced under Rs 5,000 are also a
fast-growing segment of the Indian Android market.

Indian handset OEMs put their trust in Opera
Given Operas data compression technology, which lets users browse faster, Opera
Mini is a great fit for mobile handsets used in India. Opera has partnerships with 16
Indian OEMs who preinstall Opera Mini across their entire portfolio of Android
smartphones and tablets. More than 350 models of Android devices have been
launched by these partners with Opera Mini preinstalled on them.

All eyes still on Facebook
When it comes to data usage, Facebook is still the top data consumer for Opera Minis
Android users. Facebook also leads in terms of page views and users. Seven out of
every ten webpages viewed by Opera Mini users are from Facebook.

Shopping portals thrive
Shopping portals experienced a mammoth 356% growth in user visits over last year.
The most accessed site is Flipkart which grew by 366%, followed by Amazon which
grew by 443% and Snapdeal which grew by 473% in terms of unique users. Flipkart
also leads the pack in terms of time spent per user, followed by Snapdeal and Myntra.

Classified information
During the last year, Opera Mini users on Android visiting online classifieds jumped by
150%. While Quikr and Olx were neck and neck in terms of user visits last year, Quikr is
now the leader of the segment, with year-on-year growth of 243.5%, followed by Olx at
120.7% and Sulekha at 65.83%. It is, however, interesting to note that users spent the
most time on OLX.

New kids on the block: Education & job portals
Several other segments are also gaining more attention among Opera Mini users on
Android. More and more users are now accessing education and job portals, as well as
blogs.


Video is the rising star
Android users on Opera Mini love watching videos on websites, with this category
growing by 205% since 2013. YouTube leads this category, followed by Dailymotion
and Metacafe, which grew by 175%, 450% and 205% in terms of users, respectively.

The top 3 features Opera Mini users love in their browser
1. Speed: Opera Minis compression technology shrinks data by 90%, translating into a
super fast browsing experience.
2. Download manager: This feature allows users to start, stop or resume downloads
between browsing sessions easily.
3. Security: Opera Mini does not store or cache users' private information, so users feel
safe while surfing.

The top 3 features Opera Mini users love in their browser were tabulated from a survey
conducted among Opera Mini users in July 2014.

Due to the explicit and potentially offensive nature of their contents, adults-only sites
have been excluded from our analysis.
