Supreme Court orders new hearing in 2003 rape case.

The state Supreme Court today ruled that 58-year-old Union County citizen Terry
Jones, who was convicted of raping a 19-year-old girl in 2003 must get a new court
hearing due to his claim that he had an ineffective trial lawyer. Jones was sentenced
to two consecutive 7-year terms in 2005 for the assault, which the victim who was
living with Jones at the time, claimed took place on March 18
th
and March 22, 2003.
Jones says he and the victim were arguing and he threatened to send her back home
and thats the reason for her accusations.
Jones Filed an appeal for post-conviction relief, claiming his lawyer failed to
call an alibi witness who could have provided evidence in his favor. He also claims
that he never testified out of fear of being asked about a prior conviction, and that
the prosecution never told him that his prior history couldnt be brought up during
the trial. Local judge originally denied the appeal, but State Supreme Court
overturned their decision because they felt with Jones Testimony, along with his
alibi witness, his claims would have been supported his claim that the victim
fabricated the allegations.

Crime rate falls to historic lows in the U.S. according to Attorney General

Attorney General Eric Holder said that the U.S. is seeing historic progress in
reducing crime and incarcerations rates. Looking at state and federal statistics, the
overall crime and incarceration rate fell by around 10 percent over the last five
years. Something that officials say hasnt happened in more than 40 years. Holders
theory is that the U.S. earlier attempts to get tough on crime in the past has been
responsible for the growth of the prison system and that the policies created a cycle
of crime and poverty. A report compiled with the help of former Attorney Generals
and federal prosecutors suggest changing how U.S. attorneys offices are evaluated
and funded in order to try to further reduce both crime and incarceration rates.

Secret Service investigators interviewed Omar Gonzalez twice before he scaled the
Whitehouse wall.

Gonzalez is a 42-year-old Iraq war veteran who apparently suffers from PTSD and
hopped the fence of the Whitehouse late last Friday. This happened minutes after
Obama and his daughters flew from the South Lawn to Camp David. An anonymous
official has said that Gonzalez was known to the Secret Service even though he had
never been arrested by the agency before.
He was first questioned by the agency after Virginia State Police contacted them
after being connected to a map with a circle drawn around the Whitehouse. After
standard questioning, the Secret Service determined that he did not pose any threat
to the President. On August 25
th
, just over a month later, the Secret Service Agents
stopped Gonzalez outside the White House after noticing he was carrying a hatchet.
The Secret Service is now reviewing their policies and procedures after the incident.

College now limiting fraternities after death
Clemson University has ended two dozen fraternities just a month into the fall
semester. The university came to this decision after the death of a student and a
high number of incidents involving fraternities. These incidents range from alcohol
related medical emergencies to sexual misconduct. The school felt it was especially
important to suspended fraternities after the death of 19-year-old sophomore
Tucker Hipps. Hipps reportedly went for a run and never came back. Local
authorities found his body in a nearby Lake Hartwell close to a bridge. The autopsy
revealed the teen most likely fell, and his death was not the result of hazing, but to
play it safe, the school decided to limit its fraternity activities.
