Blind student barred from playing on schools team
Jillian Milton, a blind 12-year-old seventh grader from Middletown, was told she
couldnt participate on her schools cross country team. Jillian was born 14 weeks
prematurely which resulted in her suffering from retinopathy of prematurity. Retinopathy
of prematurity is a common abnormal development of the blood vessel in the retinas of
eyes of premature babies. Jillian has no sight in her left eye and only about 10% of her
vision in her right.
Jillian was told on Monday that she couldnt compete on the team because she cant
participate in her gym class for the fear of injury. Thompson Middle School has a policy
that if you do not participate in gym class, you cannot participate in extra-curricular
sports. Jillians mother, Magaly Milton, is upset because she said the school, didnt
offer any solutions, for her daughter and she cannot find a specific reason in the four
page policy defending the schools decision to not let Jillian compete on the schools
cross country team.
