The Parliamentary Debate Competition

The debate competition was held at the lecture hall, on 1


st
October 2013. Chaired by Lexly Mong, it
explored about curfews are effective in keeping teens out of trouble. The judges for the competition
were Pn Sabariah bt Ismail, Pn Sarah bt Abdul Wahab Shahrani and Pn Fauziah bt Abdul Rahman.
The government team proposed a case line saying Curfews are effective in keeping teens out of
trouble because it place a form of restriction that serves as a platform for betterment, and the
opposition proposed a case line saying Curfews are not effective in keeping teens out of trouble
because it makes their life hard.
The committee members that organised the debate competition was Kaliswary, Nivetha, Chan sin
yean, Baara, Lexly and Akmal. The advisers were Madam Evelyn and Madam Sharifah. The debate
started at sharp 2 p.m. and the guest of honour was madam Haleza, the head of the English
Language Department.
The debate started with the first debater of the government, Mohan who defined the meaning of
the topic and her put forward his first point from government saying that, curfew keeps teen indoor.
He gave his supporting details and explanations. That continued by the first debater from the
opposition, Teo who also defined the meaning of the topic , rebate the point of the first debater
from the government and put forward his first point saying curfews waste the energy and the time
of the police force.
As the second debater from the government, Abeeramee who started with her rebuttal for the first
point that put forward by the first debater from the opposition. She continued with her first point as
saying curfews instil obedience in teenagers, the second point is curfew limits misbehaviour of
teenagers and the last point curfews allow family supervision. She made her speech concrete by
giving evidence from research and explanation for her points. So does the second debater from the
opposition, Prithi gave a good competition as she rebate the points from Abeeramee and she put
forward her point saying curfews make teens to rebel and second point curfews make teens be far
apart from family.
The third debater Abby from government and Vitiya from the opposition summed up the points and
the reply speech from the government gave out by Abby and for the opposition Teo did the reply
speech. The debate ended and it took a while for the judges to make decision, at last they
announced the winner which is the Government team and the best speaker was Abby.
The certificates were given out to the participant by the head of the English Language Department,
madam Haleza.
