Empowering the faith and healthcare conversation

MARSHALLTOWN MEDICAL & SURGICAL CENTER

Faith on FridaysConnecting Faith and Healthcare

In the Gospel of St. Matthew Jesus sent out the twelve disciples to the work of
God. Where these first to be sent out scared, feeling perhaps diminished in
their own abilities to do what Jesus had commanded, or were they confident in
the promises that Jesus had spoken over them?

How exactly does God use the everyday efforts that we offer to our patients
and their families? Seems like such a tall orderhealing the sick, raising the
dead, driving out demons. Do we have such power in us to do such things?
The apostle Paul was clear to point back to Christ who grants such strength to
carry out the tasks of serving, healing, and bringing back life. God who grants
life will so grant the power to bring change. Insomuch we do become differ-
ence makers. The mundane nature of procedures, surgeries, medical challeng-
es, and life altering conditions takes on new life we recognize the power God
gives to bring change and be agents of change.
As simple prayer that I try to pray before leading worship on Sunday mornings
speaks truth to the humbleness and openness that God asks for in us.
Lord God, You have appointed me as a Bishop and Pastor in Your Church, but
you see how unsuited I am to meet so great and difficult a task. If I had lacked
Your help, I would have ruined everything long ago. Therefore, I call upon You: I
wish to devote my mouth and my heart to you; I shall teach the people. I myself will
learn and ponder diligently upon You Word. Use me as Your instrument -- but do
not forsake me, for if ever I should be on my own, I would easily wreck it all.
Before we begin our day of service here at MMSC let us pray together that God
would be our helper. May we devote our hands, feet, mouths and intellect to
be agents of change in the lives of those we are called to serve. Collectively our
prayer is that God would use us as instrumentsto be difference makers and a
hospital set a part for the work of God.
Peace in your Journey!

O God, early in the morn-
ing I cry to you. Help me
to pray and to concentrate
my thoughts on you: I
cannot do this alone. In
me there is darkness, But
with you there is light; I
am lonely, but you do not
leave me; I am feeble in
heart, but with you there is
help; I am restless, but
with you there is peace. In
me there is bitterness, but
with you there is patience;
I do not understand your
ways, But you know the
way for meRestore me
to liberty, And enable me
to live now that I may an-
swer before you and before
me. Lord, whatever this
day may bring, Your
name be praised.
