mothersandchildrenaroundtheworld.TofurtherthegoalsofEveryWomanEveryChild,aglobal
movementspearheadedbyUNSecretaryGeneraltoimprovethehealthofwomenandchildren,Philips
willtargetthepopulationsofwomenandchildrenwherematernalandchildmortalityareconcentrated
andwherenutritionandenergychallengesaremostacute,withaspecialfocusonsubSaharanAfrica
andSouthEastAsia.

Weaimtoimprovethelivesofatleast100millionwomenandchildreninAfricaandSouthEastAsia
by2025bycommittingto:

1. Deliverthenextgenerationofcareformothersandtheirchildren.Rightfromthestart.
Wewilldothisbydevelopinginclusivehealthcareinnovationsthatsupportthestrengtheningoflocal
healthcaresystemsandthathelpimprovehealthoutcomesspecificallyforbothmotherandchild.
Withourintegratedsolutionsweareabletotrackthehealthandwellbeingofmotherandbaby,from
conceptionthroughpregnancyandlabor&deliverytopostnatalcare.Wewillactivelyworkwith
governmentsinemergingmarketstodevelopanddeployaffordableandeffectivenationalhealthcare
infrastructures,healthcaretransformation,andprovideclinicaleducationandskillstrainingforHealth
careProfessionals.

Philipsalreadyhasexperiencewithdeliveringlargescalehealthcaretransformationandrevitalization
programs,suchasinZambia,Tanzania,Ghana,Vietnam,IndonesiaandthePhilippines.Wewill
continuetodosoofferingrecipientcountriesaffordablefinancialsolutionsthroughourPhilipsCapital
organization.OurHealthcareTransformationServiceshasbeentaskedtoprovideconsulting,design
andeducationservicesandenabletransformationsalsoinmotherandchildcare.Since2011,wehave
trained2,500healthcareprofessionalsinAfrica.ThroughourannualPhilipsAfricaRoadshowand
partnershipswithorganizationssuchasAMREFweaimtotrainmanymoreinthefuture.Wealsorun
aprogramwithImagingtheWorlddeployingalowcostultrasoundsolutionthathasalreadyresultedin
increasedantenatalclinicvisitsandattendeddeliveriesinruralUganda.

Wewillcontinuetoadvocatefortheimprovementofmother&childcaretoallrelevantstakeholders
throughourthoughtleadershipactivities,ourpartnershipswithcivilsociety,andengagementswith
membersoftheUNorganizations.

PhilipswilldevelopthoughtleadershipactivitieswhichwewilldisseminateviatheEWECcommunity,
ourpartnershipwiththeWorldEconomicForum,UNOPS,UNICEF,thePhilipsFoundation(tobe
launchedinQ3of2014),ourannualPhilipsAfricaRoadshow,theFabricofAfricaplatform,andour
advocacynetworkinthecountries.

2. Providebetteraccesstohealthcare.
Creatingsolutionswhichenablehealthier,saferliving.
Wewillcontinuetodevelopanddeployqualitysolutionsandnewbusinessmodelsthatenableaccess
andimprovequalityofcareformothersandtheirchildreninlowresourcesettings,particularlyin
SubSaharanAfricathroughourglobalresearchandinnovationcentersinKenya,India,Chinaand
TheNetherlands.ThePhilipsAfricaInnovationHubwasfoundedin2014andcurrentlyalreadyemploys
closeto30researchers,corporateentrepreneursandsalesandmarketingstaffwhoconnecttoour
businessand1500Philipsresearchersglobally.Healthier,saferlivingsolutionsincludecleancooking
stoves,automatedrespirationmonitorsthatsupportsthediagnosisofpneumoniainchildrenunder5,
andsolarlighting,aswellaseandmHealthsolutionswhichcanprovidehealthylivingandnutritional
advice.Forexample,wedevelopedamobileobstetricalmonitoringsolutioninIndonesiawhich
remotelymonitorpregnantwomenforearlyhighriskidentificationviaanewtelehealthsolution.

Currently,500millionAfricans(includingwomenandchildren)havenoaccesstoelectricity.
Furthermore,itisestimatedthat2550%oftheprimaryhealthcareclinicsinAfricahavenoaccessto
electricity.InsupportoftheUNSE4ALLHighImpactOpportunityofEnergyandWomensHealthwewill
continuetodeploy(solar)communitylifecenters(CLCs)whichprovideoutdoorlightingandgenerate
sufficientelectricitytoimproveaccesstohealthcare.HealthcareservicesenabledthroughCLCs
includetherefrigerationofvaccines,basichealthcaretechnologies,andindoorlightformotherstobe
abletodelivertheirchildrensafelyduringthenight.

ThePhilipsFoundationwilldriveforpartnershipswhichwillfocuscollectivelyonimprovingthehealth
ofinfantsintheirfirst1000daysoflife.Thefirst1.000days,frompregnancytotoddler,aredecisivefor
survivalandahealthyfuture.ThePhilipsFoundationwillcombinetheirinnovativestrengthswith
partnerstomakeadifferenceonpreventablecausesofinfantmortalityandimproveaccessto
healthcare.

3. Promotehealthyandnutritiousdietsformothersandchildren,understandingbarriers
tobreastfeedingandsupportingbreastfeedingintheworkplace.
Werecognizethecriticalimportanceofnutritionforthehealthydevelopmentofbothmothersand
children,andwearecommittedtosupportnewmothers(andthehealthcareprofessionalsthat
supportthem)toenablethebeststartinlifefortheirchildren,fromfamilyplanningandconception
onwards.Wewillstepupourresearchtoevenbetterunderstandtheadoptionofhealthyand
nutritiousdietsformothersandchildrenfromtheprenatalperiodthroughthefirst1000days.

Wewillcontinuetosupportbreastfeedinginparticularinthefirstyearafterbirth,givenitsopportunity
toovercomefeedingchallengesparticularlyindevelopingcountriesandacknowledgingthatworking
womenneedspecialsupporttocontinuebreastfeeding,includingaccesstopumpsandasupportive
breastfeedingenvironmentathomeandatwork.Forexample,wewillconductresearchinGhanaand
Kenyainthesecondhalfof2014tobetterunderstandhowtosupportAfricanwomenwhowork
outsidethehometocontinuetobreastfeedtothelevelsrecommendedbyinternationaldevelopment
agencies.Theresearchwillprobeattitudestobreastfeeding,tobreastfeedingsupportivetechnologies
includingbreastpumpsandtobreastfeedingsupportivepolicies,particularlythosethatrelatetothe
workplace.

Wewillforgemorepartnershipswithcivilsociety,publichealthandotherstakeholderstoprovide
educationonbreastfeedinganddriveadvocacyfortheimprovementofbreastfeedingfacilitiesinthe
workplace.Forexample,in2014Philipsprovidedbreastfeedingclassesfornursesandmidwivesin
Yangon.
