Referencing Citing

Why?
To acknowledge the work of others
To give your work credibility and reliability
To demonstrate that you have read and considered the relevant literature or the
body of knowledge on which you have based your work
To validate points that you have made
To enable other researchers to trace your sources and lead them on to further
information
To follow academic writing standards
To avoid plagiarism
Citing is the process of giving credit to the sources you used to write your paper.
Citations can be located in the text or at the end of the work in a bibliography.
What?
If you knew a piece of information before you started doing research, generally
you do not need to credit it.
You do not need to cite well-known facts, such as dates, which can be found in
many encyclopaedias.
ll other information such as !uotations, statistics, and ideas should always be
cited in your papers.

"asic Rules for Referencing
%eferences > 0ibliography must be arranged alphabetically, according to author.
reference list must contain an entry for each in-text citation.
$ther sources, not cited in the text, should go in a separate 0ibliography.
lways note the full details of your references and !uotes as you read and write,
so that you do not forget your sources. It will then be easier to make the final list
of references.
Include a page number if your citation is a direct !uotation from your source.
