Temperature Sensors
SMSC temperature sensors employ highly accurate measurement techniques allowing for 1C accuracy.
Several special functions, such as Resistance Error Correction and Beta Compensation, minimize measurement errors. This
reduces engineering time normally spent on calibration and characterization.
Each sensor is differentiated in its class by unique features such as Anti-parallel Diodes, which allow three sensors in a two-
sensor package.
Temperature Sensor Technologies
Resistance Error Correction - This automatically corrects for series resistance effects that can occur for trace or substrate resistance.
Without correction, four inches of trace metal will add 0.6C error to a temperature measurement. This technology allows designers to
spend less engineering time on new board layouts.
Anti-Parallel Diodes - A rst-to-market feature, this unique conguration allows two remote temperature monitors to occupy two pins. The
EMC1414 extends the common dual sensor footprint to three temperature monitors.
Ideality Conguration - Developed by SMSC, Ideality Conguration compensates for the common error effect present in substrate diodes
and discrete transistors. Without this conguration, the ideality effect can create a spreading error over temperatures as shown in the
diagram below. Ideality Conguration improves BOM exibility while maintaining accuracy.
Hottest of Zones - A special register congured to report the hottest of several temperature readings. This implementation makes it simple
to poll all the temperatures in applications looking for the same trip point among all measurements.
Beta Compensation - This feature is also known as using the Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) or transistor model for temperature
measurement. Injected current is used to measure the temperature of a transistor; however, error in measurement occurs when forward
gains or betas change over temperature and injected currents. Beta Compensation offsets these small transistor geometry effects
commonly present in substrate diodes of CPUs, GPUs and ASICs.
Digital Filter - This feature reduces the effect of noise and temperature spikes on the system or thermal sensor. The External Diode
Channel uses a programmable digital lter. This lter can be congured as Level 1, Level 2 or Disabled.

Fan Controllers
SMSC designs thermal management solutions for most of the top-tier PC vendors worldwide.
SMSCs fan control ICs provide additional reliability to a systems thermal management by shifting the need for constant supervision by
the microprocessor. Once congured, alerts bring only those events requiring action to the attention of the host processor.
Lower acoustic noise can be attained with an SMSC fan control IC. Fan spin up noise reduction, fan speed ramp rate limiting and tracking
fan speed to temperature can all be done without extensive software overhead, development or constant processing. This reduces design
time, prototype validation time and time-to-market.
The use of fan controllers shortens development time compared to microcontroller software solutions. Real-time fan control from a
microcontroller is not easily programmed and often results in longer development cycles.

Fan Controller Technologies
High-Frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) - SMSC fan control employs low and
high (>18kHz) frequency fan drive signals. Levels above 18kHz are compatible with
four wire fans and above what a human ear can detect as switching noise.
Fan Speed Ramp Rate Control - This limits quick changes in fan speed. Sudden
increases in fan speed are more easily detected as audible noise.
Multi-Temperature Control - One fan can be controlled by up to three temperature
measurement zones, centralizing control for greater accuracy.
RPM Closed-Loop Control with PID - By measuring the fan speed with a closed-loop,
the speed can be maintained over the life of the product. This is essential because
an aging fan will change its response to a given drive signal or a change in system
back-pressure over time. This minimizes fan to fan variations that are present in
open-loop control systems. The effect is to maintain a constant cooling level for
a given temperature. PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) Control can reduce fan
speed over/under shoot.
