Throughout the centuries, the quest for meaning has created
countless stories on how to live life. The common thread in
mythical stories, spiritual books, or philosophical texts is reflected in what was carved in the Temple of Apollo: Know Thyself. Even then, in the 7th century BC, this was seen as long established wisdom. Ask someone: Who are you?, and in most cases you get an answer that represent the idea of who they think they are. Often this idea of self is a mix of labels and attributed characteristics, describing the roles we play in life. I am Bartholomeus, author, facilitator, and creator of The Natural Self personal growth system. I am a father of two, a surfer, and martial artist. But am I? A sneak preview of what is beyond, thanks to my near death drowning experience, suggests otherwise. Who I think I am is what I do - labelled upon myself. The mix of my doings has given me the thought of my being. We all have a deeper sense of self. Some kind of essence, and somehow we are aware that this is the true self. This deeper sense of self does not have thoughts and words to express itself. Its much quieter voice speaks in senses and feelings. It signals contentment when our labels are experiencing what is wanted and aligned with our true nature. Discontentment in the form of stress, anxiety, and fear is signaled when the experience is undesired, unwanted, and at odds with our essence. Knowing yourself allows you to play your role well, to bring the best of what you have to the roles environment. It allows you to not take it personally when things go awry, and it allows you not to get dependent on the roles environment (other people, material objects, and status) for your own core contentment. You will be better with undesired change, quicker to recover from negative emotions, and freer to love unconditionally. The Natural Self Fundamentals: 1. You are not what you do. What you do changes as its environment changes, what you are does not. 2. When it rains, you will get wet. If you think you are the raincoat, life will be unpleasant in times of rain. 3. Thoughts, Emotions, and Behaviours result from how things seem (to us). Clarity of who you are, and what you do in your roles brings better quality thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. The Natural Self system enhances our capacity to understand our roles in life by following the anthropological principles of human development. The system uses a fun experiential way to emerge what cannot be defined; as this is unique and personal to us all; . . . The Natural Self. The Natural Self is available as a self study book, one to one coaching, and as 1-, 2-, or 6-day retreats hosted by my(natural) self.
