Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity (1880)

Death is a mighty ruler that spreads fear and terror everywhere. Blessed are we
Christians that we have a Savior who is Lord of all our enemies, even of death.

Luke 7:11-17

Christ is also Lord over death; we see,

1. how certain this truth is; our Lord Jesus
a. is true and eternal God and therefore life,
b. He has divine power and therefore power to give life as a man by virtue
of the personal union
1
,
c. He died for us and has overcome death by His death and brought life,
d. He has put life in his word, whose power lets us experience His Holy
Spirit;

2. to what end this truth encourages us:
a. we do not need to fear death, but confidently to go to it with Christ,
b. we do not need to grieve too much about those who have fallen asleep
in Jesus, but to comfort ourselves with their former resurrection and
reunion with them,
c. to praise the Lord for His consolation against all mortal anguish
2
,
d. to extol this sole consolation in Christ to others.
