Mr Jaideep Bhatia is the Vice President of Agronomy at Pepsico India Holdings Pvt. Ltd. He joined Pepsico in 2006 and has overseen some of the key initiatives the Agribusiness space. Prior to Pepsico, Mr. Bhatia worked at Bayer CropScience as market development manager with a focus on Uttar Pradesh (UP). Prior to Bayer, he was Senior Regional Manager for Marketing at Mahyco Seeds Ltd, an associate company of Monsanto India. Mr. Bhatia has also worked in various capacities for Duncans Industries Limited, Marico and Indo Gulf Corporation. He holds a postgraduate degree in Agricultural Economics from the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. PepsiCo India is a subsidiary of PepsiCo. PepsiCo is the second largest food and beverage company in the world with total net revenues of US$ 60 billion in 2010, US$ 10.6 billion in core division operating profit and a presence in 200 countries. PepsiCo entered India in 1989 and has grown to become one of the largest food and beverage businesses in the country. PepsiCo India has built an expansive beverage and snack food business supported by 37 beverage bottling plants and three food plants. PepsiCo Indias extensive portf olio includes brands like Pepsi, Lays, Kurkure, Tropicana 100%, Gatorade, Quaker, and fast growing brands like Nimbooz and Aliva. In 2009, PepsiCo India achieved a significant milestone, by becoming the first business to achieve Positive Water Balance in the beverage world. Pepsico India accounts for 12% of PepsiCos net revenues, including the companys Asia and Middle East portfolio. PepsiCo India experienced double digit growth in 2010. PepsiCo India is the country's largest corporation involved in potato contract farming and deals with 200,000 tons of the tuber worth about Rs two billion (US $36.4 million) annually. PepsiCo India works with over 24,000 farmers across nine states, including Punjab, Maharashtra and West Bengal, procuring agri-products like potato and barley from them. By 2013 the company plans to reach 30,000 farmers. PepsiCo aims to scale up in the nine states before expanding elsewhere. The company provides technical and financial support to farmers, which includes collaborations with banks and insurance firms. PepsiCo assures buy back of farm produce at pre-agreed prices from cultivators, helping insulate them from market price fluctuations. PepsiCo is supporting local farmers globally through funding and training. In India, for exampl e, PepsiCo is teaching contract farmers sustainable agriculture practices, and helping 12,000 farmers form a cooperative and establish credit through the State Bank of India. PepsiCo supplies high quality planting material, including its proprietary advanced seed varieties and offers advanced plant protection program and technical know-how developed in collaboration with leading agri-input companies like DuPont, Bayer and BASF. The company also facilitates crop/weather risk insurance arrangements for farmers in partnership with leading insurance companies to protect farm incomes.
