Fiji Election Hit With Fraud Accusations

Leaders of the Six Opposition Parties Claim Ballot Boxes Were Missing or Opened

Fiji's election has been thrown into

confusion as a united opposition says
it has evidence of fraud, contradicting
international observers' findings that
the election result looked to be in line
with what people wanted.
Provisional results give Rear Adm.
Voreqe Bainimarama's party, Fiji First,
a convincing lead with more than 60%
of the vote, according to data released
by the Fijian election authority early
Thursday. The military strongman has
ruled Fiji for eight years.
The nearest opposition, the Social
Democratic Liberal Party, known as
Sodelpa, won just 27% of the vote, the
election authority said. Final results
aren't expected for several days.
Peter Reith, the Australian co-leader
of the Multinational Observers Group,
said that after talking to 92 observers
from 15 countries, it had been
concluded the elections were "on track
to broadly represent the will of the
Fijian voters."
Leaders of the six opposition parties
dispute this, saying in a joint news
conference that their own observers
had raised concerns about missing
ballot boxes, boxes that seemed to
have been opened, and more votes at
polls than registered voters.
The election is being closely watched
internationally, as it will return the
island nation to democracy after the last
elected government was overthrown

Frank Bainimarama On The Road To Victory

Fiji's self-appointed leader Frank
Bainimarama is set for a dominant
election win, as counting in the longawaited poll continues.
With more than half of the ballots
counted, the leader of the Fiji First
party has a compelling lead with
233,005 votes, or 60 per cent.
The next closest party, the Social
Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA),
led by Ro Teimumu Kepa, has won less
than half that number.
It has 103,463 votes or 27 per cent.
Fiji First president Dr Jiko Luveni
said the party was expecting a bigger
victory.
"We really anticipated a good landslide
victory, given the approach that we
took," she said.
"This election was really just between
two parties and that is Fiji First and
SODELPA."
Dr Luveni said she believes the election
was free and fair.
"This is the first election where the
system has changed and there are a lot
of lessons to be learned and this will be
the basis of how we will approach the
next election," she said.
Claims of electoral irregularities
A coalition of opposition parties said
Wednesday's historic election was far
from free and fair.
They have complained of multiple
breaches including tampering and

illegal removal of ballot boxes.

"We are asking for issues to be dealt
with, satisfactory explanations to be
given, otherwise these can't be regarded
as free and fair elections," Fiji Labour
Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said.
"We don't consider these elections to be
free and fair, I don't think it meets the
benchmark for free and fair elections."
Five political parties want counting
to be suspended until their allegations
have been addressed.
The Multinational Observer Group
(MOG) overseeing the first post-coup
Fijian election has found conditions
were in place for Fijians to vote freely.
"This was a credible election," it said
in a preliminary statement.
"While counting is ongoing and the
results are yet to be finalised, we assess
that the outcome is on track to broadly
represent the will of the Fijian voters."
However, the MOG highlighted that
civil society participation was restricted,
as was the media's ability to examine
the claims of candidates and parties.
Australian MP Matt Thistlethwaite,
who was one of the observers, told
Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program
the election is just the first step on the
road back to democracy.
"It's been eight years since they've had
the right to express their democratic
freedoms and they've turned up in
droves," he said.

"We spoke to many people who were

excited, who were thankful for the
opportunity to have their say in Fiji's
future."
Australia impressed with election
process
Australian Foreign Minister Julie
Bishop has congratulated Fiji on a
successful execution of the poll, paying
tribute to Mr Bainimarama.
Ms Bishop said Australian election
observers have told her the poll appears
to have run well.
"There are over 90 international
observers in Fiji and Peter Reith has
informed me that the process has gone
very smoothly," she said.
"It's been peaceful, there have been no
reported incidents to date of violence or
intimidation, indeed he was impressed
with the way people came out to vote."
But Ms Bishop warned there is more to
democracy than a fair election.
"There are a number of countries that
have held elections but one would
hardly call them democracies," she said.
"We will continue to work with Fiji to
ensure the press can be free, that the
judiciary is independent... to achieve
what I think will be an acceptable level
of democracy and an appreciation of
democratic values in Fiji."
Ms Bishop said she looking forward to
further tightening Australia's relations
with Fiji in the wake of the election.

"We'll continue down that path of

rebuilding trust, supporting each other,
embracing Fiji back into the Pacific
family as well as the international
community," she said.
"There's quite a menu of matters for us
to look at in terms of trade, investment,
defence ties... arrangements between
our respective public servants,
educational opportunities."
High voter turnout
Fiji's election supervisor Mohammed
Saneem said the turnout was
impressive, with more than half a
million people voting.
"I would like to thank all the voters, all
the Fijians who turned out in numbers
to come and vote, who braved the sun
and also all the queues that were there,"
he said.
"The Fijian elections office will ensure
we will assess all the lessons learnt in
this election."
Under the proportional representation
system that Fiji has adopted, the
number of votes the party gets is
factored in as well as the number of
votes a candidates gets.
Seven political parties and two
independent candidates are standing for
representation in the 50-seat parliament.
Under the constitution, a government
must be formed within 17 days of the
election, leaving open the possibility of
a coalition of several minor parties.

Voting has started in Fiji's first election

since the military coup in 2006.
Large crowds gathered outside voting
booths well before their opening times,
eager to exercise their newly restored
democratic rights.
Queues at many booths around the
capital, Suva, stretched for hundreds of
metres.
Fiji's president, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau,
called for a violence-free election
ahead of poll.
He said all parties should accept the
result of a ballot he described as "the
first free and fair elections" in Fiji's
history.
Fiji's military said the lead-up to
the election had been violence-free,
but there have been reports of voter
intimidation.
Speaking to the Fiji Broadcasting
Corporation,
Brigadier
General
Tikoitoga did not release details of the
alleged threats.
"The very same people who didn't want
the military to provide the security

institutions, such as the dismantling
of the Great Council of Chiefs, the
umbrella body of the indigenous
community since 1874.
Every citizen can now call himself or
herself a "Fijian", whereas historically
that name was associated with the
indigenous community. Fijian land
rights, it is claimed, have been
endangered. Part of the difficulty
is that many fundamental changes
were decreed with no consultation
whatsoever, especially with principal
stakeholders.
But the very thing that has alienated
Bainimarama from many traditional
Fijians has also endeared him to others
for whom his rhetoric of equality
and merit is appealing. Many have
benefitted from his largesse: bridges
built here, roads sealed there, with
promises of more good things to come
if he is elected.
The threatened demise of traditional

free and fair environment," he said.

Brigadier General Tikoitoga said the
army is on standby.
Observers call for fair election
The European Union is part of
the multinational observer group
monitoring the elections.
European Commission spokeswoman
Maja Kocijancic said credible elections
would allow the EU to resume full
development cooperation with Fiji.
"Fiji's return to democracy is crucial
for the country but also for the wider
Pacific region," she said.
"We as the European Union are
providing support for the democratic
process and will continue to accompany
Fiji on this journey."
Interim prime minister Frank Bainimarama,
a former military commander, is favourite
to win the election.
There are a number of parties fielding
candidates including the mainly
indigenous i-Taukei Social Democratic
Liberal Party, the Fiji Labour Party and
the United Front for a Democratic Fiji.

institutions is not universally mourned
by those who were on the margins
but who can now dream of place in
the sun for themselves. But whether
the support is firmly committed or
contingent remains to be seen, most
probably the latter. People in Fiji know
which side of the bread is buttered.
Indo-Fijians, polls show, will vote for
Bainimarama's Fiji First Party in very
large numbers. There are at least three
reasons for this.
Bainimarama's public and muchtouted embracing of a non-racial
vision has touched a chord with many
Indo-Fijian voters long at the receiving
end of Fijian nationalist politics.
Whether Bainimarama's enthusiasm
for multiracialism is shared widely by
his own party, which includes many
previous supporters of coups and
political instability in the country, is
an open question. But the illusion of
equality is appealing. Its realisation is
another matter.
Secondly, Bainimarama, campaigning

on the public purse, has pitched his

campaign at the "average" voter
struggling to make ends meet in
difficult economic times. Nearly half
the population of Fiji lives below the
poverty line, and many residents of
Fiji's mushrooming squatter settlements
are Indo-Fijians. To them free school
bus fares, abolition of school fees, and
free water supply mean much more
than the principles of democracy and
the practice of transparent governance.
Their eyes are firmly focused on the
brutal realities on the ground.
There can be no peace if a very
large section of the community feels
disaffected and alienated from the
body politic.
And thirdly, many Indo-Fijians see
Bainimarama as the bulwark between
them and a Fijian nationalist backlash.
Among the most prominent supporters
of the regime are Indo-Fijian academic
leaders, business people and moral
leaders of the community. Without
him at the helm, many genuinely fear
they might be done for. No one wants
to revisit the chaos and violence of
previous coups, and Bainimarama
loses few opportunities to remind the
people of his critical role. The army
will be in line and arsonists kept at bay
as long as he is in charge.
On present predictions, Bainimarama's
Fiji First Party is on target to get the
largest numbers in parliament, but
whether he gets an outright majority,
as he insists he will get, is another
matter. If he does not, would he form
a coalition government with another

party? His track record shows no

signs of an ability to comprise or forge
a consensus. The cut and thrust of
politics is not his cup of tea, or bowl of
yaqona (kava). It is either my way, or
the highway.
If he doesn't get his way, he might well
say that his mission is not complete,
the reforms he has put in place are
jeopardised and he will continue to
lead the country until "people get it
right". He is on the public record as
saying that Fiji can't afford him not
leading the country.
There is another scenario. The military
has been given a guardian role in the
constitution, the ultimate guarantor
of the wellbeing of the nation. In
most democracies worth their salt,
that responsibility rests with the
parliament. A number of political
parties have indicated their wish to
revisit parts of the constitution to make
it more democratic. The military could,
citing its constitutional role, step in
to prevent that possibility and ask the
Bainimarama regime to continue.
If Bainimarama wins, these questions
will become moot. But a democracy
dependent for its survival on the goodwill
of one person is full of peril. There can
be no peace if a very large section of
the community feels disaffected and
alienated from the body politic.
At best, Fiji under Bainimarama will
enjoy a fragile peace.

history and politics at the Australian
National University's College of Asia
and the Pacific.

Mida Cautions Media

Organisations

Overseas media have been cautioned by the

Media Industry Development Authority to
refrain from irresponsible reporting.
Chairman Ashwin Raj says certain
media organisations from abroad are
creating an air of insecurity and angst
by disrespecting local processes.

He made the reference to a New

two occasions questioned Fiji First
leader Voreqe Bainimarama on the
possibility of another coup.
Raj warns that accreditation of overseas

The PDP leader and his family patiently

the queues were long however we now

But certainly its a good day for the

people should turn out today to vote.
said Felix Anthony.
For PDP, Anthony stated that it was
now just a matter of waiting for results
to come out.
Well we certainly will be monitoring
the results as they come in. Dont
expect results to come in before 8 or

of excitement and as usual we will
just have to wait for the results as they

Yet even as the election was welcomed,
some raised concerns about its

Flanked by representatives of all the

Fijian Workers' Conditions

Under Scrutiny

Pressure is expected to ramp up next

season to ensure kiwifruit orchard
workers are not being ripped off, a
Tauranga kiwifruit contractor says.
Peter John was commenting on the
investigation launched by Immigration
New Zealand into a potential case of
exploitation in which Fijians lured
to work in Bay kiwifruit orchards
were alleged to have received vastly
inferior pay and living conditions than
promised.
Mr John said if the case under investigation
involved a contractor employed by a
packhouse, then the industry had "an
absolutely major problem".
He predicted there would be a shortage
of pickers next season because of the
impact of the new G3 gold variety in
which the areas planted was forecast to
increase by 913 hectares.
It meant the packhouses would be
under real pressure to get the kiwifruit
picked, packed and shipped.
"Millions of trays have to be picked in
a certain time frame. There will be a
real shortage of workers ...all the big
boys will be looking to import people
to work," he said.
The company he contracted to, Apata,
regularly checked the documentation of
his pickers to ensure he complied with
employment law. It meant he always

carried copies of their IRD numbers,

bank account numbers, photocopies
of passports, work permits and time
sheets. They had to receive more than
the minimum wage.
"It was beholden on the packhouses
to make sure all their employees and
contractors were compliant," he said.
Despite the industry's efforts to ensure
compliance, there were always "cracks
in the vinyl".
He had heard how some of the orchard
workers brought in from India,
Pakistan and Bangladesh were being
ripped off. Mr John said the number
of non-compliant contractors was very
small and the industry usually heard
through word of mouth who they were.
Contractors who broke the law were
able to do the work at a cheaper rate
than he could offer.
Meanwhile, the allegations around the
Fijian workers prompted a Tauranga
woman to disclose details of a young
Indian man who she says worked for
$5 an hour in Bay kiwifruit orchards.
She asked not be named, fearing she
would be targeted for speaking out.
She said the man was sleeping in a
garage. Accommodation of $80 a week
was allegedly taken out of his pay,
along with $5 to $7 a day for transport
to the orchard.

New Court Complex To Strengthen Western Judicial

Services
8

The construction of the new courthouse

complex in Lautoka City will
strengthen the services of Fijis judicial
sector in the Western Division.
This was recently highlighted by the
Hon Chief Justice Anthony Gates as
he officiated at the groundbreaking
ceremony for the six storey complex
that will house 18 court rooms and
other facilities including an archives,
court registry, remand cells, a media
room, a sick bay, a crche, undercover parking, a Legal Practitioners
Common Room, interview Rooms,
standby generator, water storage tanks,
solar water heating, audio and video
recording in all courtrooms, lifts to all
floors, a Juvenile Court, a Tax Court,
Family Courts, Employment Relations
Court and various registries, chambers,
and secretaries rooms.
Justice Gates pointed out that the
construction of this courthouse
complex would finally bring to end
years of struggle for court officials who
have often faced challenges because of
the challenges of their working space.
The users of the existing High Court
Building at Lautoka have known for
many years of its inadequacy for the
amount of business to be undertaken
at that premises. It is a massive project
for Fiji and is likely to cost around
F$35 million. So far it is destined to

be an infrastructure improvement to
be borne by Government alone, Hon
Gates said.
If the Western Division is to develop
economically, financially and in its
institutions and services, the justice
system within the division must be able
to respond to societys needs. There must
be Judges and Magistrates, court staff,
court facilities and modern equipment
for dealing with litigants disputes.
The new complex once completed
will have a provision of 18 court
rooms and other facilities such as
adequate provisions for filing records,
and archives, separated cells for

men, women and juveniles, cafeteria

with kitchens, a gymnasium, a media
room, a sick bay, a crche, undercover parking, a Legal Practitioners

standby generator, water storage tanks,
solar water heating, audio and video
recording in all courtrooms, lifts to all
floors, a Juvenile Court, a Tax Court,

Lautoka City Council Chief executive
officer Jone Nakauvadra says, the
council was fully supportive of the idea
and the renovation works have been

Fiji's Other Political Parties

Claim Irregularities At The Ballot

The Social Democratic Liberal Party,

the National Federation Party and
the Fiji Labour Party met in Suva
over issues relating to the counting of
ballot papers and the election results
published.
The parties have raised some issues
which they say need to be addressed
urgently.
Various party leaders met with the
media revealing what they claim were
anomalies.
A joint statement on the issue signed
by all the leaders was read out by Mick
Beddoes.
We call on the electoral commission
and the minister of elections to suspend
all counting of pre-polling as well as
provisional results until all issues are
identified and have been satisfactorily
dealt with, says Mick Beddoes.
He went on to cite examples.
For example, the tempering of ballot
boxes from polling stations without
being, the inclusion of large size files

and envelopes in ballot boxes that

could only mean have been placed in it
through the opening of the ballot boxes
as they cannot fit in the slots of the
ballot boxes, he added.
However these political parties
acknowledged that they cannot
challenge the outcome of the polls yet.
But they say they can consider other
options.
SODELPAs Ro Teimumu Kepa says,
We will show evidence and wait for
them to work on our concerns.
The leaders have also raised the issue in
writing with the Electoral Commission
and the Supervisor of Elections.
The party leaders have indicated they
will take things step by step.
PDP President Lynda Tabuya says they
share similar concerns.
We are here in solidarity and like has
been mentioned, we met in the morning
and shared these issues, this was not
pre-planned.
We have come here clearly.

long overdue but thanked Government

of its vision to strengthen service
delivery mechanisms such as the
judicial services around the country.
The High Court in Lautoka deals with
cases from the whole division and it
is only fitting that more resources and
refurbishment is done to be able to
cater for the whole division, he said.
There have been a lot of major
developments in the western division in
the last few years and in Lautoka itself
and the new look courts in Lautoka
will add to the other projects that are
currently underway in the sugar city.
He added that the development work
at the High court would add to the
growth of Lautoka and at the same
time supplement the infrastructure to
ensure that judicial cases are efficient.
Acting
Commissioner
Western
Luke Moroivalu also echoed similar
sentiments saying that the projects
augurs well with Governments vision
of ensuring better facilities and services
to the people which is also stipulated in
the Constitution.
This project is very critical to the
services provided by the judicial
department especially with the recent
economic growth level recorded in
the west and projects such as these
prove governments vision towards its
people, Mr Moroivalu said.

Renovation works at the Nadi
International Airport augurs well
with the aspirations of Fijis tourism
industry to market Fiji as one of the
most vibrant destinations in the world.
Tourism Fiji board chairman Stefan
Pichler says the move is in line with
Governments vision of providing
quality infrastructure for visitors to the
country.
Pichler who is also the Fiji Airways
managing director and CEO, Pichler
says the redesign and modernisation
of the Nadi International Airport into a
world-class port would further enhance
Fijis image to visitors arriving at our
shores and the new look airport would
boost Fijis image among tourists.
"The terminal is designed to enable
improved passenger convenience
with extra check-in counters, quick
turnaround of aircraft, and other
amenities, he said.
"We are appreciative of AFL's plans
to create a world-class international
airport, and are happy to move Fiji
Link's operations into a new space.
We're confident that the move is

practical and convenient for both our

customers and staff members.
With works on schedule, Airports Fiji
Limited executive chairman Faiz Khan
they were looking forward to seeing the
new look airport which would begin
taking shape in the next few months.
We are all excited for this project
and all Fijians should be as it will be
a landmark for all to be proud of. The
designs are unique to Fiji and everyone
will be able to connect to this very
important piece of marvel."
Pichler says Fiji Airways and Tourism
Fiji welcomed the change as it would
allow for exceptional customer service
as following the providence of a
dedicated space that's allocated for Fiji
Airways customers only.
We've had exciting progresses this
year with Fiji Link and as we continue
to expand our fleet with our new ATR
42-600 arriving last week, destination
network and customer base, we believe
the move to the new terminal will fit in
well with our own growth plans."
The $75million Project is expected to
be completed by early next year.

Asbestos Removal At
Twomey Hospital

Dangerous forms of brown and white

asbestos, discovered at the P.J. Twomey
Hospital complex, in Tamavua, Suva
are being removed.
The asbestos were discovered
through the European Unions Pacific
Hazardous
Waste
Management
(PacWaste) project, which is being
implemented by the Secretariat of
the Pacific Regional Environment
Programme (SPREP).
Given the serious ongoing human
health risks and the need for immediate
action, the EU, SPREP and the Ministry
of Health have agreed to fast track an
asbestos clean-up under the PacWaste
project to urgently address the situation
through the targeted removal and
disposal of the asbestos present at the
hospital.
This will later be followed up by a
hospital-wide decontamination plan
led by the Ministry of Health and
assisted by the PacWaste project.
The PacWaste project has been conducting
a field survey of asbestos in 13 Pacific
island countries since May 2014.
The data collected will be used to
identify priority interventions to
minimise human exposure to harmful
asbestos fibers.
Because the forms of asbestos found
in the hospital easily become airborne,
and therefore can be inhaled and cause
lung diseases like cancer, it represents
a grave health risk to the staff, patients
and visitors to the hospital, SPREP

project manager Stewart Williams said.

The PacWaste projects identification
of high-risk sites, such as the Tamavua
Twomey Hospital, highlights the
value of first conducting country-wide
surveys before planning interventions,
so that scarce resources can be
prioritised and allocated to achieve the
most positive results.
This intervention on asbestos is
just one of the first steps that the
PacWaste project will take to improve
the management of hazardous waste
across the Pacific, through targeting
priority infrastructure works, training
of waste-workers, improved waste
management systems and waste
recycling programmes, particularly
in the areas of asbestos, healthcare
waste and E-waste, Ileana Miritescu,
programme manager of the EU
Delegation said.
These will have a profound
effect, improving hazardous waste
management and the environment in
the Pacific island communities.
The next steps for the PacWaste
asbestos programme will include
finalising the detailed regional
asbestos survey and thereafter plan the
follow-up needed. This will include
stabilisation/encapsulation of buildings
containing asbestos that may remain in
use, asbestos remediation works for
high risk sites, equipment purchases,
capacity-building, training and public
awareness-raising.

Increase In Foreign
Investors

INVESTMENT Fiji received 152

foreign investment project proposals
during January to July this year
valued at $1.3billion with expected
employment of 4921.
This is a 6 per cent growth when
compared with last year's performance
of the number of foreign projects
received.
With that increase, Investment Fiji
handed over $308,536 to the Finance
Ministry from the Foreign Investment
Registration Certificate during the
period of January to July this year for
government consolidated fund.
Investment Fiji executive chairman
Bradley Truman said the key sectors
in which foreign investment projects
were received were focused in services,
tourism, manufacturing, wholesale and
retail and agriculture.
"The initiative and support by
government on the budget allocation
on the year before enables us to be very
proactive and encourage investment
into Foreign Direct Investment this
year."

As endorsed by Investment Fiji

board in July, he said Investment Fiji
envisaged improving the registration
and implementation of foreign projects.
The key focus of Investment Fiji will
include the review of the reserved and
restricted activities in consultation
with major stakeholders.
According to Mr Truman, as a catalyst
of improvement, Investment Fiji
will further focus on strengthening
the quality of both investments and
investors through maintaining full
compliance of the requirement of
major government agencies.
Finance Ministry permanent secretary
Filimone Waqabaca said the government
had agreed to continue to increase its
investment in Investment Fiji.
"We would continue to increase
Investment Fiji's funding through the
budget and would expect Investment
Fiji to pass on revenue that is collected
to the consolidated account fund.
"What we are receiving today is almost
50 per cent of what we gave for increase
for this year's budget."

Thousands Show Up At
Polling Stations To Vote

People lined up early Wednesday

morning to cast their votes at the
polling centers.
Around 1,338 polling venues opened up
around the country Wednesday morning.
That equates to 365 polling venues
in the Central Division, around 478
polling venues in the West, 321 polling
venues up North and 174 in the Eastern
Division.
14 thousand polling officials spread
across the entire country are overseeing
this one day polling.
This morning, it was pretty much

the same story everywhere people

patiently waiting for their turn to cast
their ballots.
For many, turning up very early was
the popular thing to do as they tried to
avoid the heat of the later part of the
day.
It may be a long day for many voters,
some arriving as early as 6am just to
have their say.
But for some, although the body was
weak, the mind and spirit was willing.
591, 095 people are registered to vote
in the 2014 Elections.

Making Spice 'In Her

Blood'

ENTERING, the pervasive aroma of

spices hit me as if it was an all-out
assault on the senses.
Nutmeg, cardamom and a dizzying
array of other herbs and spices were
stacked on all sides of this Toorak
establishment.
I was greeted by a serious looking
young woman who I had seen in the
shop for years but had never gotten
around to talking with.
"Hello, is there anything I can help
you with," said Shaheen Ahmed, who
manages the family business at High St
in Suva.
Ahmed and Co House of Spices is one
of the best known businesses which
deal with spices in the country.
The Suva operation is run by Ms
Ahmed, a graduate in law from the
University of Fiji passionate about the
family business.
The 28-year-old is of Gujerati descent,
a merchant class of migrants who left
India at the turn of last century to build
lives in Fiji.
"My grandfather came as a child from
Gujirat State and our family stayed a
few blocks away from where the shop
is. Later he bought the property where
he established this spice business,"
explained the young trader.
The Toorak shop imports spices from
India and Singapore which are eagerly
snapped up by devoted spice lovers in
the Capital City.
Ahmed Ise, Ms Ahmed's grandfather
started importing spices from India
during the early 1960s and later his
only son took over the business which
initially was a little shop in High St.
Like other Gujerati families, children
are shown the ropes of the family

business fairly early in life to allow

for a smooth transition when the time
comes.
Ms Ahmed once took a week off from
school while in Form Seven at Jai
Narayan College (then Indian College)
to take on the serious role of managing
a busy Suva business.
"My parents were away in India for
one week so I had to look after the
business. I was basically experienced
in business before I was 20," explained
Ms Ahmed, whose two siblings are
also involved in the business.
"I have been directly involved in the
family business from when I was
around 13 years old so by then, it came
naturally to me. I knew everything
about how to run it."
Spices add flavour and variety to
people's cooking and also helps those
with health problems and to this end,
Ms Ahmed has her work cut out.
However, given her lifelong experience
in spices, attending to customers'
demands is easy for this Toorak lady
who is familiar with what people need
for certain ailments and their various
cooking needs.
"These days we notice that people tend
to buy more processed spices. They
don't buy them whole anymore because
they just don't have the time to pound
or grind them," she said.
Ms Ahmed, who will begin studying
for her Masters of Law degree next
January, doesn't intend to leave
what she has known since she was
a child.
"It's in the blood," she said. "Law will
be my profession but this is my passion.
Once a businessperson, always a
businessperson."

Fiji Government Bids For

UNDOF Commander's Post

The Fijian Government is putting in

its bid for the next United Nations
Disengagement Observers Force
Commanders position.
Fiji will push the name of a man that
has served in all disciplined forces
in the country and was also one that
tried to help the United Nations in the
negotiation process for the release of
the 45 Fijian soldiers that were held
captive in Golan.
And Fijis Army commander Mosese
Tikoitoga believes that the incident in
Golan which saw the 45 Fijian men
missing for two weeks after they were
held in an unknown location by the Al
Nusra front before they were released
last week should strengthen Fijis
chances of getting the position.

If anything it will improve his chances

of getting the position but I dont think
seriously that it will affect the UN
selection process."
The UN selection process is very
stringent and it has very set criterias
on its selections process and interview
processes, Tikoitoga said.
Tikoitoga during the early stages of
the detainment of the soldiers said they
were filling in forms.
He hasnt gone in for interviews.
Now with the 45 men being released
the RFMF is expected to now work
on pushing in their nomination for the
post.
The position is currently being held
by Indias Commander Lieutenant
General Iqbal Singh Singha.

SSKMC Gets High Tech

Education
The Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy
Memorial College of Nadi is now the
second school in the country to develop
an elearning facility to boost literature
for its 900 plus students through
modern learning facilities available.
Senior staff members and the school
management have been working since
the start of the 2014 school year to get
the new programme up and running
which has been approved by the
Ministry of Education.
It involves setting up of a College
intranet constituting a server and a 140
computer lab and was opened Acting
Permanent secretary for Education,
Mrs Basundra Kumar.
This is a very important step for
education in Fiji and will be a big
boost for our childrens learning
capabilities, she said.
The initiative has definitely generated
immense interest and no longer can
be shelved but brought out in a big
way to as many schools as possible
to optimize student learning in an
enjoyable manner and something that
they look forward to.
One of the basic advantages of
e-learning is that it provides basic
technology, resources and professional
development to teachers so that they

can effectively implement the 21st

century educational methodologies to
better equip our citizen to compete and
succeed on the global playing field.
Government has seen the need to
create a more knowledgeable society
and a smarter Fiji and has put in place
new initiatives to attract our children to
remain in the education system so that
they are able to fully utilize the God
given talents that you have, she told
the students.
Some of the initiatives include making
education free of charge for students
from Year 1 to Year 13, free bus fares
and continued upgrading of schools
and building schools in the most rural
of places to ensure that transportation
and other challenges are eliminated.
After 13 years of education, there is
the TOPPERS programme and also
the students loan scheme which have
benefited thousands of our youths and
will continue to benefit your friends
who want to further their education,
Mrs Kumar said.
I challenge our students to take
advantage of the initiatives provided
by Government to fulfill your dreams
of becoming engineers, pilots, doctors,
lawyers and marine biologists among
others.

Fijian Government Statement On

Qatar Assistance

President Casts His Vote

THE President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau

cast his vote on Wednesday morning.
Like other voters, Ratu Epeli stood in
the line at Draiba Fijian School in Suva

to vote.
Hundreds of voters had queued up at
the polling station from early in the
morning.

The Fijian Government is grateful to

the Government of Qatar for its efforts
in the release of the 45 soldiers captured
by the Jabhat Al Nusra militants in
Syria.
Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola who last week met with
his Qatari counterpart Dr Khalid bin
Mohammed al Attiyah said that during
their meeting in Doha, Dr Khalid
promised him that "they will spare
no efforts in making sure that your
soldiers are released safely.

Fijis Foreign Minister, the Government

of Qatar 's intention to assist in the
release of the 45 Fijian soldiers who
were captured by the Al Nusra Front
was on humanitarian grounds. That
was the assurance he got from his
Qatari counterpart.
"He told me I will have good news
within 24hrs and sure enough it was,"
Minister Kubuabola said.
Qatar has paid ransom in the past in
the release of 13 nuns and also for the
release of US journalist Peter Curtis.

said: It is the fourth year we have
attended Fine Food and momentum
and focus builds every year.
We are looking forward to exhibiting
some premium niche products from
the Pacific this week to local and
international buyers as well as telling
them the story behind each of these
products.
Mr Grennell said for many participants,
this is one of the biggest platforms on
which to showcase their wares.
Products being exhibited illustrate
the diversity of premium food and
beverage coming out of the region, he
said.
From sea grapes, bottled water and
chocolate sourced from Fiji, honey
from Vanuatu to coffee from Papua
New Guinea all in premium packaging
to attract the discerning buyer.

A milestone has been reached for the

economy of Fiji with the opening of
the Australian market for fresh ginger
exports.
Twenty tonnes of mature ginger will be
exported in a weeks time as revealed
by the Ministry of Agricultures
Director of Extension, Unaisi Waibuta.
The first consignment of 20 tonnes
of mature ginger will be exported in a
weeks time and the Ministry intends
to do a soft launch after the second
consignment of fresh ginger export
arrives in Australia to inform the
Australian consumers about the Fiji
Ginger, she said.
Mrs Waibuta said that this is a good
opportunity for local farmers to get
a better return for the ginger they
plant. She added that the Ministry was
working with the Biosecurity Authority
of Fiji to ensure that the strict import

requirements laid out by Australia are

met by our local exporters.
Mrs Waibuta said that there is a protocol
and pathway to adhere to, which starts
from the farmers field to the exporters
pack house.
The
Ministry
of
Agriculture
acknowledges the work done by the
Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural
Market Access Program (PHAMA) in
securing the Australia ginger market
access for Fiji.
Ginger is already now a $12million
industry and the opening of the fresh
ginger market to Australia provides a
great opportunity to further broaden Fijis
economic base and also provide more
employment opportunities for farmers.
The Ministry of Agriculture will also be
supporting the planting of more ginger
in the Province of Ra from next year
for the production of quality ginger.

VISION Motors is supplying government

133 Chevrolet vehicles through an
operating lease arrangement, which was
secured through a tender process.
Vision Motors general manager Ajay
Lal said government had called for
tenders last year and supply was made
in February this year.
"Vision Motors has supplied 133 units,
which are made up of passenger Sedan,
vans and four-wheel drive seven-seater
SUVs," he told this newspaper.
"Under operating lease, government
pays a monthly cost, which also
includes servicing and scheduled
maintenance costs."
He said Chevrolet was part of American
company General Motors (GM), which
also owned several world-class brands

such as Holden, Buick, GMC, Cadillac

and Opel.
Mr Lal said Chevrolet was born in
1911 and GM had since continued to
refine its engineering prowess to build
high-class vehicles that were suited for
most conditions.
"A highly fuel economical power plant,
euro tuned suspension, a host of safety
and luxury features make Chevrolet
the vehicle of choice," Mr Lal said.
He said two of the Chevrolet models
Sonic and Cruze had picked the top
selling class variants in their respective
categories since the launch in Fiji in
February.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the
Ministry of Finance in the past two weeks
on the leasing arrangement proved futile.

85-Year-Old Braves The

Heat For A Better Fiji

Despite the blasting sun, six-mile walk

to and from his house on the dusty
roads, Changeshwar Sami said that
nothing would stand in the way of him
and his vote.
Braving the heat to cast his vote in
the nearest polling station in Tamidola
Valiba Sangam Mandir, in Wailevu
Macuata , Mr Sami had nothing but
smiles to offer after the long walk.
He went on to say that even at his old
age he wasnt going to miss out on an
opportunity to cast his vote.
I am happy that we are finally given
the chance to vote after the long wait,

I dont mind the walk because it is part

of my life.
He was however disappointed that
on his way to his polling station he
encountered a number of people much
younger than himself, complaining of
the heat and the long commute. He
commented saying that today was an
historical moment that shouldnt be
wasted, so people should make proper
use of the opportunity. No individual
should have any excuse.
Mr Sami said that all he wanted from
the newly elected government was a
better Fiji.

Fiji Polls
The polls opened Wednesday in Fiji's
first election since Frank Bainimarama
seized power in 2006 and put the
country under eight years of military
rule.
In Suva, long lines formed at polling
booths. More than half a million Fijians
are registered to vote - 50,000 of them
have already cast advance votes.
Wednesday was a paid public holiday
in Fiji, to encourage everyone to get
out and vote. Attorney-General Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum issued a warning to
employers, saying those that do not

prioritise voting time for staff could

face a $50,000 fine or up to 10 years
in prison.
The polls closed at 6pm. Counting
started immediately but it could take
few days to get a final result.
The multinational observer group says
it's pleased the election is looking like
it will be free and fair.
However, the Coalition for Democracy
has raised concerns about the system
being used on the ballot paper, which
contains a grid of 249 numbers instead
of candidate names.

These were the words of 68-year-old

voter Pasepa Cakacaka after voting at
the Intellectually Handicapped School
in Namadi, Suva.
She said she was looking forward to
the election and the only thing she
wished the elected government was to
forget the past and move Fiji forward.
Mrs Cakacaka said even though a lot
of things had happened during the last
few weeks of campaign, choosing who
to vote for was easy.
I thank the Fijian Elections Office for

the easy and fast service and I know

my vote is going to make a difference,
she said.
Meanwhile, first-time voter Alanieta
Luvuiwa said she was updated by the
media on various political parties and
this had really motivated her to vote.
As a student, I would like the
elected government to improve on
the education system in Fiji; I would
like them to introduce more training
programmes and decrease VAT, Ms
Luvuiwa said.

Forget The Past

More Than 3000 Police Officers To

Ensure Election Is Incident Free

More than three thousand police officers

will be working tomorrow to ensure the
elections remain incident free.
This
week,
two
Assistant
Commissioners were deployed to the
various divisions to oversee this work.
This election is well planned we have
put in place any possible contingency
that we will act. Im confident that we
can assure the public of Fiji that well
make sure that theyll be free , theyll be
secured on their way to elections during
the elections and after the elections, said
Police Commissioner, Ben Groenewald.
All polling venues will be covered
, were posted in urban , peri urban
and rural areas like 4 or 3 depends on
the polling venues and the number of
polling stations so the police officers

will be in line of sight to all the presiding

officers should there be any need the
police officers will be there said Police
Chief of Operations Rusiate Tudravu.
The Police Commissioner also
confirmed that several complaints have
been made on possible breaches of the
48 hour black out period.
In fact this morning again we
received complaints from one of the
political parties indicating that some of
the political parties do not abide by the
elections black out period and we also
received a complaint where several
vehicles of political parties were
damaged. Its an ongoing issue and we
must accept that we can get more of
these complaints prior as well as after
the elections, Groenewald said.

How Women Will Help Decide

Who Wins Fiji Election

A feature of Fiji's 2014 election, the

first since the military takeover eight
years ago, is that there are more women
contesting the poll than the last vote in
2006.
This year, out of 249 candidates
approved by the Fiji Elections Office,
women make up 17 per cent of those
on the ballot papers. That's 44 aspiring
women candidates; 43 from six parties
and one independent.
In comparison, only 6 per cent of
the 338 candidates that contested
the 2006 elections were women 25
from six parties and two independent
candidates.
Out of the 27, eight women made
it to parliament, which was double
the amount compared with previous
elections.
Fiji has a vision of having 30 per cent
women in parliament. However, the
number of women standing for each
political party in this year's election is
much lower than expected.
So it would seem that dreams are far
from reality. This isn't surprising.
Fiji is still a patriarchal society,
privileging men in a range of ways
and affording them more power than
women. Leadership roles are usually
given to men, and men possess the most
say in collective decision-making.
These basic power imbalances are
mirrored in woman's social and
economic lives. Fiji's rates of violence
against women and girls are among the
highest in the world, with 64 per cent
of women experiencing physical and/
or sexual violence in their lifetime.
But, despite such imbalances, it would
be a mistake to assume that Fiji women
are completely powerless or that they
exert no influence on the country's
rapidly changing social structures.
Women increasingly work in civil
service roles, they are active participants
in Fiji's civil society, and involved
in non-government organisations as
well as more traditional community
women's groups and church groups.
Fijian women are beginning to break
social and gender rules around their
traditional roles and are staying longer
in school.
Women are now coming out as better
educated and more career driven with
an ability to maneuver and negotiate
the demands of their traditional gender
roles and customs.
Women candidates standing in this
year's elections boast a wealth of
experience, outstanding academic
qualifications
and
longstanding
community service.
Lawyers, entrepreneurs, women's
activists, former UN staff, academics

and civil servants are some of the

female candidates contesting the vote.
A lot of these women represent the "old
guard", coming from elite or political
families such as Ro Teimumu Kepa
who isn't new to politics. She not only
carries the title of paramount chief
but also has the capacity to influence
chiefs of other confederacies. She
contested the 2006 elections, winning
her seat and becoming the Minister for
Education.
On the other hand, we have new kids
on the block like Roshika Deo who
was one of the first women to declare
her interest to stand for elections
as an independent candidate. She
created the "Be the Change" political
campaign to encourage women and
young people to embrace civic action
through social media. For her work
promoting democratic change, social
justice and ending discrimination and
violence against women and girls, Deo
won the US Secretary of State's Award
for International Women of Courage in
March this year.
In fact, the improvement in female
participation can be attributed to Fiji's
active women's rights movement.
In 2012 femLINK Pacific, the Fiji
Women's Rights Movement, the
National Council for Women, and
Soqosoqo ni vakamarama (an umbrella
body of all women's groups across Fiji)
convened the first Fiji Women's Forum.
This created a platform for increasing
women's participation in politics and
leadership.
In June 2014, female representatives
from most political parties also
participated in campaign training,
hosted by Fiji Women's Forum. The
workshop discussed women's issues
in politics and more importantly how
women candidates can better prepare
themselves.
Women's NGOs have also put in
the hard yards in advocating and
promoting gender equality in politics
and leadership in this year's elections.
In March this year, Fiji Young
Women's Forum brought together
five organisations to encourage young
women to actively participate in Fiji's
political future. Almost a quarter of
Fiji's population will be first-time
voters in 2014 and over half of all
voters will be under the age of 35.
It will be interesting to see how "one
person-one vote" translates into voter
preferences for female candidates over
male candidates. 2014 could mark
the year when we not only witness a
change in the way Fiji is ruled, but the
start of real change when it comes to
who rules.

Fiji Elections: We Need Home-Grown Solution As

Western Media Still Jaundiced To Fiji
As Fiji approaches the historical 2014
election on 17 September, 2014, one
thing is evidently clear: there has
been no indigenous, i-Taukei Fijian
leader in Fijis history, who could ever
win the hearts of the migrant IndoFijian community in Fiji, as much as
Bainimarama has done. Despite all
the venom of western media and his
opponents, Vorege Bainimarama has
been the most visionary leader that a
multi-racial and multi-ethnic Fiji has
seen. Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, Ratu Sir
Kamiseses Mara, Sitiveni Rabuka,
Mahendra Chaudhry and Laisenia
Qarase have been left behind in the
scrapheap of history, as Bainimarama
looks for a home grown solution in
a multi-racial fledgling democracy,
plagued with ethno-nationalism and
divisive politics.
He may not be perfect-but he is the best
Fiji has seen so far. And in the process,
expect some collateral damage, as any
history-in-making produces.
Every man and his dog, with their
Western concept of failed democracy
in Fiji had painted Frank Bainimarama
as a villain and a selfish, self-centred
man. The latest one is Nick Naidu,
who represents an almost defunct
organisation, the Coalition for
Democracy in Fiji in Auckland.
Naidus claims on TV 3 interview
on15 September 2014 substantiates
the reason why Frank Bainimarama
is sceptical and suspicious of a free
press in general and Western concept
of press freedom in developing Fiji, in
particular.
Naidu claims that Bainimarama is a
person who only thinks of himself
and nobody else. If Naidu and TV 3
had bothered to read that mornings
NZ Heralds article by its ethnic

reporter, Lincoln Tan, they may think

twice about airing such blinkered and
jaundiced interview.
According to Tan, Nadi (Fiji) taxi
driver Vinod Kumar said he "cannot
wait" to have his say on who will form
the next Fijian government.
The 55-year-old grandfather, whose
son Shanil lives and works in
Auckland, is "90 per cent sure" he will
be voting for Frank Bainimarama and
his Fiji First Party when the polls open
on Wednesday.
"The West just don't understand, they
think just because we had a military
coup that makes Frank a bad person,"
Mr Kumar said.
"But life for us ordinary folks has
improved so much under him. The
roads no longer have potholes, crime is
down and more children are going to
school because schooling is now free."
He said small things, such as free
school buses for students, go a long way
because most in Fiji were "generally
quite poor".
Mr Kumar said many Fijians were
excited at the prospect of voting and
election rallies were attracting crowds
of thousands.
That
shows
the
diametrically
inconsistent White mainstream media
in New Zealand which is still somewhat
jaundiced and unsure on Fiji issues.
My journalism studies at Auckland
University of Technology (AUT) in
2009 and 2010 revealed in my research
papers that some of NZ media, who
hardly employ ethnic reporters, were
very opposed to happenings in Fiji
just because Fiji had kicked away
an unsuitable concept of Western
Democracy, has kicked out some NZ
reporters and did not at all miss the
step-brotherly treatment given by

NZ and Australia. Fiji marched along

oblivion of Ostrich syndrome and snub
by these neighbours. Fiji got other
friends and ignored these two countries
which now appear to be mending the
bridges they burnt.
TV 3 failed to ask and Naidu failed
to volunteer the information that
democracy has become a dirty word
in Fiji, especially among the IndoFijians who were starkly mistreated by
previous ethno-nationalist and blatantly
racist governments, masquerading
as a democracy. NZ and Australia,
as supposedly civilised First World
neighbours failed to keep a tab on the
wrongdoings of Qarase regime which
virtually had rendered Indo-Fijians
to a third-class status. It was only the
blessings of 2006 takeover of Qarase
regime that gave back Fiji some hope.
If today I could call myself a Fijian
and enjoy dual citizenship of NZ and
Fiji, and still have that dignity as a Fiji
citizen, it is because of the same Frank
Bainimarama that the Western World
takes all opportunity to project as some
villain, because he rejected western
imported failed system against a homegrown solution. What Fiji needed was
an understanding of the world and
a local solution to its fundamental
problems. Fiji cannot be blamed for
befriending China, Russia, Cuba and
Korea when its neighbours, founded
on bible and Christianity never showed
much love for their neighbour.
So many good things have taken place
in Fiji, and consequently the credibility,
authenticity and mandate of Coalition
for Democracy comes into question for
not knowing their Fiji. The leaders of
other parties visited Auckland, nobody
heard or saw. When Bainimarama
visited Auckland on 9 August, 2014

at Vodafone Event Centre the place

was overcrowded with people and
Frank Bainimarama was mobbed
like a Bollywood star. The blinkered
Mainstream media in Auckland were
blind to some 2,000 supporters but
only saw a handful of protesters.
So many people know what perhaps
Nick Naidu and TV 3 need to know
about this popular Fijian leader.
Frank Bainimarama rescued Fiji from
chasm of racism and divisive politics,
camouflaged as democracy. Fiji needs
a home-grown solution, no more of
imported failed western concepts.
The elections in 2014 is a step in
that direction. And when history is in
making, as was USAs 200 years ago,
we are bound to have some collateral
damage.

Alberta Will Soon Topple B.C. As Canadas Third Most

Populous Province, And More
Statistics Canada published its latest
population projections on Wednesday,
drawing on input from demographers
across the country to assess what the
country will look like down the road.
Despite the uncertainty inherent to
population projections, as Statistics
Canada puts it, the results offer an
interesting glimpse into the future.
Graeme Hamilton offers 10 things you
need to know about Canadas growing
population:
Getting bigger all the time: Thanks
primarily to immigration, Canadas
population is projected to continue
growing over the next 50 years.
Under a medium-growth scenario, the
population 35.2-million in 2013
is projected to reach 43.5-million in
2028 and 51-million in 2063.
Were getting older As the baby-boom
generation hits old age, the proportion
of people 65 and older in the population
shoots up. By 2030, when the youngest
baby-boomers turn 65, nearly a quarter
of the Canadian population will be 65
and older. The aging population will
mean more deaths and a slower rate of

population growth.
Invest in birthday candles In 2013,
there were just under 7,000 Canadians
who had reached age 100. By 2063,
with aging boomers and medical
advances, this number will swell to
more than 62,000 under a mediumgrowth scenario. The population aged
80 and over is projected to hit nearly
5-million by 2063, up from 1.4-million
in 2013.
Workers wanted In 2013, 69% of
the population was of working age,
between 15 and 64 years old. All
projection scenarios show that figure
dropping significantly, hitting roughly
60% in 2030 before leveling off.
The shrinking East Most projection
scenarios show Newfoundland and
Labrador, Nova Scotia and New
Brunswick all losing population over
the next 25 years. This is because of
their relatively older age structure,
their small share of Canadian
immigration and their tendency
to lose people to other provinces.
Newfoundland is projected to be the
hardest hit, dropping to 455,600 under

Ontario Woman's $50M Lotto

Max Win

Eating your fiance's last ice-cream bar

may not be a smart thing to do, but the
craving certainly paid off for an Orillia,
Ont., woman.
A trip to the local store to "replace" the
treat -- and a Lotto Max ticket purchased
there -- made the newly engaged couple
Ontario's latest multimillionaires.
Deanna Bergeron, 30, and her fiance
Jeff Bourret, 32, collected their cheque
at the OLG Presentation Centre in
Toronto on Monday after winning the
Sept. 5 draw of Lotto Max.
I ate Jeff's last buster bar and I went to
the store to replace it with a drumstick
and decided to buy another ticket and
it turned out to be the winner," said
Bergeron.
"So, I think we are going to have a
lot of drumsticks in our future," she
laughed.
On the Sunday after the draw, Bergeron
got a call from her mother telling

her she heard someone in Orillia had

bought the winning ticket and urged to
check hers.
When it was confirmed that the couple
had indeed won the lottery, Bergeron
said their first reaction was disbelief.
"No words to explain. We looked at each
other and said 'where do we go from
here,"' added Bourret. "Till it happens,
you just don't really know what to expect."
The couple said they were still trying
to process the win, but the first thing
on their mind was a vacation, "sooner
than later."
Bergeron is a personal trainer while
Bourret works for the federal government.
The couple got engaged in the first
week of June, but they have yet to set a
wedding date.
"Trying to process this. Once we get
through some of the excitement of this,
then we will sit down and figure out the
wedding plans," said Bourret.

the medium-growth scenario from

526,700 in 2013.
Except Prince Edward Island P.E.I.
is the Atlantic outlier, projected to see
its population increase by 23% under
a medium-growth scenario. This is
because Islanders are younger than
their Atlantic neighbours and less
inclined to emigrate. Still, P.E.I. will
remain the smallest province, with
a projected 0.4% of the Canadian
population.
Quebec will grow thanks to
immigration But its share of the
Canadian population will continue to
shrink. From 28.9% of the population
in 1951, Quebec was down to 23.2%
in 2013 and with a projected
9.4-million people it will hit 21.6%
in 2038.
Alberta rising Under most scenarios,
Alberta will overtake British Columbia
by 2038 to become Canada third
most populous province after Ontario
and Quebec. With a relatively young
population, relatively high fertility and
substantial internal migration gains, it
is projected to experience the highest

population growth of all provinces,

reaching between 5.6-million and
6.8-million in 2038. In 2013, its
population was 4-million.
Immigration the key to growth
As has been the case since the early
1990s, migratory increase will be
the key factor countering the impact
of aging on population growth for the
next 50 years. In Ontario, for example,
immigration will propel the population
to 16.6-million in 2038, up from
13.5-million in 2013.
These are educated guesses A
major change in immigration policy
could throw off estimates, as could
an unforeseen restructuring of the
economy. As an illustration of the
uncertainty, Canadas population in
2063 is projected to increase by 14%
under a low-growth scenario and 80%
under a high-growth scenario. Statistics
Canada demographer Patrice Dion said
the projections are nonetheless useful
to policy-makers. I can say that,
overall, population projections tend to
do better than weather predictions, he
joked.

Surrey Mayoral Candidate

Wants To End Crescent
Beach Train Traffic

A Surrey mayoral candidate wants

to put an end to train traffic in the
community of Crescent Beach.
Linda Hepner says one of the first
things shell do if she gets elected is
speak with the company running the
Burlington Northern Santa Fe line and
get trains out of the area.
She wants the route moved inland,
away from the coastline. This is about
a safety discussion and honestly it
doesnt matter what those trains are
carrying, they are too frequent, too

heavy, too much and that is the issue.

Those trains, some with 135 cars,
make their way through this particular
area and cut off access. That is a major
safety issue, she explains.
She adds with the weight of those trains
in an area vulnerable to earthquakes, it
is a disaster waiting to happen.
Currently 16 to 20 trains-per-day pass
through Surrey on the Burlington
Northern Santa Fe train line, which will
increase by 320 trains-a-year due to the
Fraser Surrey Docks coal expansion.

BCTF Recommending Teachers Vote In Favour Of

Tentative Deal

Teachers are being encouraged to ratify

the tentative agreement reached with
the province.
BC Teachers Federation President Jim
Iker says the executive met Tuesday
and is recommending members vote in
favour of the deal on Thursday.
He says it was a tough series of
negotiations to get to this point. The
tentative deal includes several hundred
new teaching positions each year as a
result of an annual education fund that
will be used exclusively for bargaining
unit members.
Iker says the deal also includes a
mutually agreed process to address any
future court decisions and the removal
of Article E80.
A significant grievance remedy fund
that will be used as a one-time payment
to our members in improvements
in elementary preparation time,
improvements in salary, extended
health and dental benefits, fair pay
for teachers teaching on-call for
every day that they work, and also no
concessions, he adds.
Iker says teachers will be getting
written or electronic copies of the
tentative agreement.
An email to teachers reads as follows:
Concession demands are off the table:
Your bargaining team has negotiated
an agreement that does not contain
a single concession. In this day and
age of concessionary bargaining, that
is a significant achievement in itself.
Among the employers concessions
that were removed from the bargaining

table, one of the most important is

BCPSEAs calendar proposal that
would have given school districts the
ability to change school calendars
without local union approval.
Government
withdrew
Article
E80: Because of all the action and
lobbying by teachers, other unions,
parents, and concerned citizens, there
was tremendous pressure on the
government to drop this unjust demand.
Article E80 was an attempt to bargain
around the Supreme Court decisions,
and British Columbians agreed that no
one should have to give up their rights
to get a collective agreement. Dollars
into a new Education Fund mean more
teaching jobs. The proposed agreement
provides $400 million for hiring of
specialist and classroom teachers over
the life of the six-year agreement.
Every dollar in this annual fund will
be used to hire BCTF bargaining unit
members. We estimate that about 850
additional teaching positions will be
created province-wide each year for
the life of this agreement.
A salary increase for teachers: The
proposed agreement includes salary
increases of 7.25 per cent over six
years. No co-operative gains or other
monetary concessions were made
in order to obtain this gain in salary.
In addition, the tentative agreement
includes $105 million to cover the
retroactive grievances. The Executive
Committee will decide the fairest way
to share this money amongst members.
Prep time and benefits also are improved.

Preparation time for elementary

teachers increases to 100 minutes per
week effective immediately, with an
additional 10 minutes in the last year
of the agreement. In addition, there are
improved dental and extended health
benefits.
Thank you teachers, thank you
everyone
BCTF President Jim Ikers message to
members today:
From day one, the government tried
to paint us as unreasonable people
who only had ourselves in mind.
Each step of the way, we refuted their
arguments and repeated our goal which
was to achieve a fair deal for teachers
and better support for our students,
Iker said. It is difficult to reverse 12
years of underfunding and the erosion
of public education in one round of
bargaining, but we have taken a big
step in the right direction.
Thank you, colleagues, for your
commitment, courage, and sustained
action over the last few months. We
began Stage 1 of our job action in
the middle of April, went to rotating
strikes in mid-May, escalated to allout strike in mid-June and continued
into mid-September. Throughout all
this time, youve been an inspiration.
Thank you for everything you did and
will continue to do to strengthen public
education for all students.
And to our CUPE colleagues:
everyday you were with us on the line,
supporting us and speaking out for
public education. Together we can go

back to our schools and workplaces

knowing we are stronger because of
our day-to-day solidarity during this
strike and lockout.
I also want to thank the BC Federation
of Labour, the Canadian Labour
Congress, the Canadian Teachers
Federation and the many other unions
in BC, across Canada, and throughout
the world for their ongoing solidarity.
Not only did you walk our picket
lines, help organize and attend rallies,
many of you also dug deep into your
pockets to ensure that we would have
the financial resources to achieve our
goals.
The tremendous community support
from so many parents, students,
and local businesses also played a
pivotal role as more and more British
Columbians joined picket lines, lobbied
elected officials, and attended marches
and rallies. This collective outpouring
of solidarity shows that when we act in
concert we can turn the clock forward,
not back.
Now I encourage all members to take
the time to read the proposed agreement,
discuss it with your colleagues, and
take part in this important vote.
More information to come
The full text of the tentative
agreement will be available on the
BCTF website as soon as possible.
Please check the member portal for
updates. Your local will be in touch
with the details of where and when
the ratification vote will take place in
your community.

BC Teachers Reach Tentative Agreement

After several days of intensive
negotiations, representatives of the
BC Teachers Federation signed an
agreement-in-committee with the BC
Public School Employers Association.
The BCTF Executive Committee is
recommending ratification. Teachers
will vote on the agreement-incommittee on Thursday, September 18,
2014.
The tentative agreement will provide
new support for students, ensure there are
more specialist and classroom teachers
in schools working with children, and
protect teachers constitutional rights as
the court case continues, said BCTF
President Jim Iker.
Thanks to the courageous stand
teachers took on the picket lines and
the strong support of parents and other
unions, BC teachers were able to get
new money invested in schools and
reach a mutually agreed-to process
to deal with any future court decision
on class size, class composition, and
staffing levels.
Iker outlined that the BCTF Executive
Committee is recommending a yes
vote on Thursday based on several key
achievements for teachers and students
in the tentative agreement:

Several hundred new teaching

positions each year as a result of an
annual education fund that will be
used exclusively for bargaining unit
members.
A mutually agreed-to process to
address any future Court decision as
well as the removal of the contentious
Article E.80.
A significant grievance remedy
fund that will be used as a onetime payment to members and will
provide improvements in elementary
preparation time.
Improvements in salary and extended
health benefits.
Fair pay for teachers teaching on call
for every day they work.
There are no concessions.
In
announcing
the
Executive
Committees
recommendation,
Iker thanked BC teachers for their
commitment, persistence, and courage
over the last few months. He also
thanked the BC Federation of Labour,
the Canadian Labour Congress, other
unions from BC and across Canada,
the Canadian Teachers Federation, as
well as teacher unions especially
those in Ontario, parents, community
groups, and concerned citizens for

supporting and standing in solidarity

with teachers.
BCs teachers are proud of the stand
we took for fairness and improved

learning conditions and we were

heartened every step of the way by the
steady waves of public support, said
Iker.

Independent School
Mcdonalds Canada To Sell
Because Of Teachers Strike Java In Grocery Stores
Says smaller class sizes mean more attention to his daughters

A father, who enrolled his two

daughters at an independent school in
the Lower Mainland a few weeks ago
because of the strike, says he has no
plans on moving them back to their old
public school.
About 40,000 teachers will be voting on
the tentative agreement put forward by
the BCTF and provincial government a
few days ago and if approved, students
could be back in class next week.
Wil, who does not want his full name
used, says regardless of what happens
there, he is happy he made the choice
to send his daughters to an independent
school.
I made the decision [largely based]
on the situation, but I also like the fact
that it is a smaller class size and they
are getting more attention. [They are]
really enjoying it. Im really noticing
that you are a whole person; you are
not just a student. You are noticed as an
individual, and you are grown in more
ways than just the academic subject
that is being taught, he tells
Wil initially enrolled his girls there
because his eldest daughter was starting

Grade 12. He says it has always been

her dream to play volleyball at a postsecondary institution and to do that,
she needs to play in her final year of
high school.
Ironically, despite making the move,
his daughter has not been able to play
on her new schools team. She is
absolutely devastated. You could just
see in her body language; her shoulders
are drooping. We did not tell her until
last night because we just could not
bear to tell her any sooner.
BC School Sports, which governs all
school sports in the province, states that a
student must be enrolled there for a year
before it can play for that team. The rule
is meant to keep students from switching
schools simply to play on their team.
Wil wants BC School Sports to make
special exemptions for students this
year because of the strike.
Christine
Bradstock
with
the
organization says they are aware there
are special situations that have arisen
due to the education dispute. She
says any alternate decisions will be
determined by their eligibility officer.

Serial Killer Cody Legebokoff

Gets Life Sentence Without
Chance Of Parole For 25 Years
The northern B.C. man who killed four
women has been given a life sentence
without the chance of parole for 25 years.
Cody Legebokoffs conviction on
four counts of first-degree murder
automatically assigns him the life
sentence.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Glen
Parrett told the court as he sentenced
Legebokoff that the man fabricated the
claim that unnamed drug dealers killed

the women.
Parrett said that the murders were not
the actions of a simple killer but of
something infinitely worse.
A jury convicted the 24-year-old
last week of killing Loren Leslie, Jill
Stuchenko, Cynthia Mass and Natasha
Montgomery in 2009 and 2010.
Legebokoff wont be eligible for parole
until November 2035, calculated from
the date that he was arrested.

McDonalds Corp is making its McCafe

ground coffee available in Canadian
grocery stores this month, the fastfood giant said on Tuesday, part of its
broader campaign to win market share
in a country long dominated by rivals
like Tim Hortons Inc and Starbucks
Corp.
The competition to woo Canadian
coffee drinkers has intensified in recent
years, while rivals have pushed into
McDonalds territory by expanding
their own breakfast and lunch menus
in order to attract new customers and
drive up spending per visit.
Everybodys trying to scramble for
customers, the chief executive of
McDonalds Canada, John Betts, told
Reuters.
Tim Hortons, which claims to brew
nearly eight out of every 10 cups of
coffee sold in Canada, last month
announced a new coffee blend, marking
its introduction of a second blend after
50 years in business.
Betts says that since taking over
operations in Canada in 2008, his
focus has helped McDonalds double
its market share in coffee and triple its
coffee sales. McDonalds launched the
McCafe brand in Canada in 2011.
You might say its the thing that turned
our business around here, in Canada,
said Betts.
Weve had double-digit growth on a
compounded basis over the last five
years at breakfast time, in terms of
traffic and sales. Thats a significant
category growth for us.
Betts, who started as a part-time worker
at McDonalds 44 years ago, said in

his six years in Canada, McDonalds

has grown its share of the coffee
market while opening only a handful
more restaurants, compared with the
hundreds opened by competitors.
But with 78% of coffee drinking done
at home, according to the Canadian
Coffee Association, theres a bigger
market that McDonalds wants to tap
into.
McDonalds Canada is partnering with
Kraft Canada to sell its bagged medium
roast ground coffee, as well the singleserve formats for Tassimo and Keurig
in grocery stores.
The worlds largest fast-food chain
began testing McCafe grocery sales
in the United States last year and will
launch nationwide in the United States
in early 2015.
The push into grocery stores comes
as sales at established restaurants at
McDonalds globally have declined.
The company has been grappling with
internal missteps, brutal competition
and shifting consumer preferences.
But Betts said Canada is one of
McDonalds top-performing markets,
and it is still seeing significant positive
momentum in growth, though he
declined to provide data.
In Canada, McDonalds restaurants
have had to address tougher
government restrictions on bringing in
temporary foreign workers following
an outcry over perceived abuses of the
system.
Betts said McDonalds was working
with franchisees to adapt to changes,
though he said that there were labor
challenges in parts of the country.

Canada Family Class Immigration

Continued From Last Week

Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent

Resident;
Be 18 years of age or older;
Exceed the minimum necessary
income level for this program.
If married or in a common-law
relationship, the income of both
can be included;
The sponsor must sign an
undertaking to repay any provincial
social assistance benefits paid to
the sponsor and accompanying
family member(s), if any, for a
period of 20 year, if necessary; and
If the sponsor resides in Quebec,
an additional undertaking must
be signed
Sponsors will have to prove that
they meet the minimum income
requirements by submitting notices
of assessment issued by the Canadian
Revenue Agency (CRA) in support
of their sponsorship and they must
also demonstrate they have met the
minimum necessary income level for
three consecutive years.
Super Visa Program
The Super Visa Program allows parents
and grandparents to come to Canada

as long-term visitors. Successful

applicants receive multiple-entry
visitor visas that may last for up to 10
years. Unlike standard visitor visas,
which must be renewed every six
months, a Super Visa remains valid for
two years at a time.
To be eligible for the Super Visa
program, parents and grandparents
must meet standard visitor visa
requirements. In addition, they must:
Provide a written commitment of
financial support from their child
or grandchild in Canada;
Sponsor in Canada must meet
minimum income requirements;
Must prove they have purchased
Canadian health insurance for at
least one year; and
Complete an immigration medical
examination
Depending on the nationality, parents/
grandparents may require a Temporary
Resident Visa in addition to the Super
Visa.
Parent and Grandparent Super Visa
On 1 December 2011, the Canadian
government announced the creation
of the Parents and Grandparents Super
Visa. This visa will allow the parents
and grandparents of Canadian citizens
and Permanent Residents to come to

Canada as visitors for a period of up to

2 consecutive years at a time without
having to renew their status. The visa
can remain valid for up to 10 years,
allowing for re-entry during this period
of time.
Who Can Apply for the Super Visa
Parents or grandparents of Canadian
citizens and Permanent Residents are
eligible to apply for this visa. The
applicants cannot be inadmissible
to Canada on the basis of health or
security, and they may be required to
meet specific conditions set forth by
the visa office through which they will
be applying.
It is important to note that no dependents
can be included on this application.
Only parents or grandparents, and their
spouses or common-law partners, may
apply for the Super Visa.
Applicants from TRV and TRVExempt Countries
The Super Visa is ideal for parents
and grandparents living in countries
that require a Temporary Residence
Visa (TRV) for entry to Canada. By
obtaining the super visa, they will be
able to travel freely between Canada
and their country of residence without
the worry and hassle of regularly reapplying for a TRV.

Applicants from TRV-exempt countries

can also greatly benefit from this new
provision. They may apply using the
same application process. However,
instead of being issued a visa, they
will be given an official letter from
Citizenship and Immigration Canada
(CIC) which will authorize their visits
to Canada for up to 2 years at a time.
The Application Process
The application process is similar to that
for a regular TRV. However, additional
documentation is required to ensure
that the parents and grandparents will
be well supported during their time in
Canada. This includes:
A letter of invitation from the child or
grandchild residing in Canada
Documents that prove the child or
grandchild meets the Low Income CutOff (LICO) minimum
Proof of parental relationship with
child or grandchild, such as a birth
certificate that names them as a parent
Proof of medical insurance coverage
for one year with a Canadian insurance
company

Buffa Cue Chicken Wings

With Sticky Honey Sauce

For the wings and marinade:

16 whole chicken wings (about 3-1/2
pounds)
1/2 cup Tabasco sauce or your favorite
hot sauce
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons coarse salt (kosher or sea)
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the mop sauce:
8 tablespoons (1 stick) salted butter
1/2 cup Tabasco sauce or your favorite
hot sauce
For serving:
Maytag Blue Cheese Sauce (see step 6)
4 ribs celery, rinsed and cut into thirds
lengthwise, then cut crosswise into
roughly 3-inch sticks
Step 1: Rinse the chicken wings under
cold running water and blot them dry
with paper towels. Cut the tips off the
wings and discard them (or leave the
tips on if you dont mind munching a
morsel thats mostly skin and bones).
Cut each wing into 2 pieces through
the joint.
Step 2: Make the marinade: Whisk
together the hot sauce, lemon juice, oil,
Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and
pepper in a large nonreactive mixing
bowl. Stir in the wing pieces and let
marinate in the refrigerator, covered,

for 4 to 6 hours or as long as overnight,

turning the wings several times so that
they marinate evenly.
Step 3: Make the mop sauce: Just before
setting up the grill, melt the butter in a
small saucepan over medium heat and
stir in the hot sauce.
Step 4: Set up the grill for indirect
grilling and preheat to medium. If using
a gas grill, place all of the wood chips or
chunks in the smoker box or in a smoker
pouch and run the grill on high until
you see smoke, then reduce the heat to
medium. If using a charcoal grill, place
a large drip pan in the center, preheat
the grill to medium, then toss all of the
wood chips or chunks on the coals.
Step 5: When ready to cook, drain the
marinade off the wings and discard the
marinade. Brush and oil the grill grate.
Place the wings in the center of the hot
grate, over the drip pan and away from
the heat, and cover the grill. Cook the
wings until the skin is crisp and golden
brown and the meat is cooked through,
30 to 40 minutes. During the last 10
minutes, start basting the wings with
some of the mop sauce.
Step 6: Transfer the grilled wings to a
shallow bowl or platter and pour the
remaining mop sauce over them. Serve
with Maytag Blue Cheese Sauce and
celery for dipping and of course plenty
of paper napkins and cold beer.

Stomach Ache? What To Eat To Feel Better

Herbal teas (those without caffeine,
which can stimulate acid reflux) can
also help tame a troubled tummy.
Chamomile is a favorite because it
is thought to reduce inflammation,
although pretty much any herbal brew
is a great way to get liquid into your
body. But stay away from peppermint
tea. It can relax the lower esophageal
sphincter, allowing acid and other
stomach contents to splash up into the
esophagus and cause heartburn.
Coconut water

Upset stomach? Whether its nausea,

vomiting, or just a general icky feeling
due to a stomach bug or something you
ate, you want to feel betternow.
Sadly, your doctor may say that the
best treatment is to just wait until the
germ or symptoms run their course.
However, choosing the right food may
make that waiting period a bit easier.
Here's a guide to what the experts
generally recommend to soothe tummy
trouble.
Bananas

Bananas are the first item in the

"brat" diet (bananas, rice, applesauce,
and toast), which has been used by
generations to soothe bellies.
Bananas contain potassium, which
you may need if you're dehydrated
from vomiting or diarrhea. They also
contain sugar so you get calories at a
time when you're probably not eating
much. But they're not so sweet it will
make you nauseous.
Rice

constipated. If the cause of distress is

constipation, then an apple can help.
When someone is having diarrhea, you
want the applesauce.

Toast
Toast won't cause acid reflux, so you'll
feel better. It also doesn't sit in the
stomach like a high-fat meal, which
would make you feel increasingly
uncomfortable. But leave off the butter
and jam until you're feeling better.
Soup
Rice, along with other starchy foods
such as potatoes and oats, helps coat the
lining of the stomach, easing digestion
and having an overall soothing effect.
Starchy foods also don't sit in the
stomach for long periods of time, nor
do they stimulate acid reflux, which
would make you feel even worse.
Applesauce
Applesauce is generally calming
for the stomach because it's easily
digested, relieves diarrhea, and
provides calories. Apples themselves
contain pectin (especially in the skin),
which can provide roughage if you're

Broth, in particular, is great for an upset

stomach. Both the liquid and a high salt

content can keep you hydrated. Salt,

when it's in the bloodstream, helps
draw fluid in. Of course, if you have
high blood pressure, look for low-salt
varieties so you'll still get the liquid
benefit. Soup or broth, if not cooked
in fat, is very easily digested. It's welltolerated and you don't get nauseous or
have reflux.
Crackers

Crackers fall into the same category

as rice. They're easily digestible and
soothing. There's not a lot in them that
can hurt you. In fact, they're often
recommended for women who have
morning sickness. Some report that
crackers can also absorb stomach acid,
but it's unclear if that's true or not.
As long as you don't have high blood
pressure, plain old saltines may be the
way to go (although low-salt versions
of saltines are now available).
Herbal tea

Coconut water may not have all the

magical properties manufacturers
would like you to believe, but it can
help soothe tummies.
It contains natural sugar to provide
calories as well as electrolytes, such
as potassium. It also contains vitamin
C. Plus it has no artificial ingredients
such as food colorings. "I'm a big fan
of coconut water."
Ginger

Ginger has long been touted as a way

to calm upset stomachs, but doesn't
have the strong evidence to back up the
claim, despite its reputation. I don't
think there's any hard scientific data to
support that. It's just a spice [though]
it's generally well tolerated. Some
people find ginger helpful and may
even soak it in water or make ginger
tea to quell queasiness.

Hillary Clinton Tells Iowa She's 'Thinking About'

Running For US Presidency In 2016

Former US secretary of state Hillary

Clinton has admitted she was
considering running for the presidency
in 2016.
With tongue-in-cheek references to a
possible run, Mrs Clinton's appearance
at an annual steak fry in Iowa had the
undertones of a campaign lead-up.
"It is true. I am thinking about it," Mrs
Clinton said, in apparent reference to a
White House bid.
"But for today, that is not why I'm here.
I am here for the steak."
Iowa is a critical state in the presidential
election cycle, holding a disproportionate
sway due to its caucuses which are the
first-in-the-nation nominating event
every four years.
The outcome serves as a bellwether
for subsequent states' primaries and
caucuses.
As a result, presidential candidates
begin appearing in Iowa years
before elections, courting support
of local officials, building campaign

Naked Bodies Of Two British Tourists Found On Thai

Beach On Popular Resort Island Of Koh Tao

Bodies of British tourists found on Thai beach

The naked bodies of two British

tourists have been found on a Thai
beach, sparking a murder probe on the
popular resort island of Koh Tao.
On Monday, the unidentified man and
woman, both aged 24, were found
stripped with several wounds to their
bodies close to a beachside bungalow
on the island, a diving hotspot near
Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand,
police said.
"They were murdered and found naked
on the beach. Police were informed
at 6:30am [local time]," local police
official Jakkrapan Kaewkhao said.
"Their bodies were found 30 metres
from the bungalow."
The pair had arrived in Thailand on
August 25.
Police were searching for witnesses
and were yet to identify a suspect or
motive.
An employee at the budget seaside

resort where the pair were staying said

the bodies were found behind a set of
large rocks on the beach.
"It was the first time this has happened
on the island. I have never seen
anything like this," the staff member
said.
Koh Tao is popular with tourists
but draws fewer travellers than the
neighbouring Koh Phangan, home to
the hedonistic "full moon" party.
Thailand's lucrative tourism industry
has been battered in recent months
after a prolonged political crisis ended
a coup that saw the army impose a
curfew and strict martial law.
Although the curfew was swiftly
lifted from key tourist hotspots, visitor
numbers were yet to rebound.
Thailand's military leaders vowed to
clean up the kingdom's tourist resorts
after complaints of scams, assaults and
even police extortion.

Rescue Boat Carrying Wedding Party Capsizes, Leaves 17 Dead In

Pakistan

At least 17 people including a

bridegroom and two children drowned
when a rescue boat carrying a wedding
party capsized in flood-hit central
Pakistan last Sunday.
Officials said the boat, which was
carrying at least 40 people, went down
as it attempted to cross a swollen river
in the Muzaffargarh district of central
Punjab province.
"We have recovered more dead bodies.
The death toll has now risen to 17. Two
women were among the dead," a senior
rescue official told the media, adding
that the rescue operation was ongoing.

Local government official Shaukat Ali

earlier said 22 people had been rescued.
Ashiq Malik, medical superintendent
of the nearby Nishtar Hospital, said the
bodies of two children and bridegroom
Zahid Ali, 27, were brought there.
Most passengers were members of a
wedding party that had requested the
use of the rescue boat to take them to a
Valima, an Islamic wedding reception to
mark the consummation of a marriage.
"I saved my life by holding on to an
electricity pole," distraught bride
Mashal told private news channel.
In a statement, Pakistan's president

Mamnoon Hussain expressed "profound

grief and sorrow" over the incident.
Jam Sajjad, a spokesman for Punjab's
rescue service, claimed the party wanted
to charter the boat despite warnings
about the dangerously high waters.
"The family requested to cross the
flooded river in the boat and were
refused by military officials several
times but they kept insisting," he said.
"The waves were moving fast and the
family and other people panicked.
"They were asked to remain calm but
they continued to panic, causing the boat
to become unbalanced and capsize."

Floods and landslides from days of

heavy monsoon rains have left almost
500 people dead in Pakistan and India.
Pakistan has suffered a series of annual
flood disasters since 2010, with as many
as 2.3 million people have been affected,
according to the central government.
Rescue operations were concentrated
around the central city of Multan, where
authorities blew up two dykes to try to
stop the water inundating the city.
Around
300
villages
around
Muzaffargarh have been inundated
and the flooding has also devastated
thousands of acres of the cotton crop.

Scottish Independence: Queen Elizabeth II Reportedly

Urges Scots To 'Think Carefully' On Referendum Vote
Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly
broken her silence over the Scottish
independence vote, saying she hopes
Scots will "think very carefully" about
the future when voting in a referendum
that could break up the United
Kingdom.
The monarch, coming out of a morning
service at a church in Crathie near
her Balmoral estate in Scotland last
Sunday, responded to a remark from
a well-wisher that they would not
mention the referendum.
"I hope people will think very carefully
about the future," The Times newspaper
reported Elizabeth as saying.
A vote for independence on Thursday
would divide the kingdom and although
Elizabeth is assumed to back the union,
she has been extremely careful to
avoid making public comments on the
referendum.
"This is totally impartial and reinforces
the point that this is a matter for
the people of Scotland," a source at
Buckingham Palace said.
"The Queen is constitutionally
impartial, above politics and has
always said this is a matter for the
people of Scotland."
Elizabeth likely to remain Queen of
Scotland after vote
Whatever the outcome of Thursday's
vote, Queen Elizabeth is still likely to
be Queen of Scotland, since most Scots
are keen to retain her as head of state
even if they vote to go it alone.
Should Scotland vote for independence,
nationalists say Elizabeth, who is
88, would remain Queen of Scotland
although they give no guarantee of the
monarchy's long-term future.
Scotland is close to Elizabeth's heart.
Her mother was Scottish and she spent
much of her childhood there. Her late
sister Margaret was born there.
The country is the favourite summer
destination for her and her husband
Philip, who leave London in August for
their estate at Balmoral, often joined
by other members of the royal family.
Her only official comment on the
referendum came in May in a message
to the General Assembly of the Church
of Scotland.
"In this important year of referendum,
we pray that whatever the outcome,
people of faith and people of good will,
will work together for the social good
of Scotland," she said.
However, she gave an indication of her
views on a split of her realm during a
speech to mark 25 years on the throne in
1977 when she referred to referendums
on devolved governments in Scotland
and Wales, which were later rejected
by voters.
"I number Kings and Queens of
England and of Scotland, and Princes of
Wales among my ancestors and so I can
readily understand these aspirations.
But I cannot forget that I was crowned
Queen of the United Kingdom of Great

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles watching pipe band
in Scotland
Britain and Northern Ireland."
Thousands of independence supporters
took to the streets of Scotland's
largest city, Glasgow, on Sunday as
polls showed the rival camps running
desperately close just five days before
the referendum.
Separatist and unionist leaders worked
across the country to woo undecided
voters among the 4 million Scots and
Scotland residents.
Scottish National Party leader Alex
Salmond, who has spearheaded the
drive for independence, said he was
confident the Yes campaign would win.
"We're not aiming to win by one vote.
We're aiming to achieve a substantial
majority if we can," he said.
Alistair Darling, a former British
finance minister and leader of the Better
Together campaign, warned if Scots
vote to split from the United Kingdom,
it would be an irreversible decision that
would bring economic doom.
With promises from British political
leaders of greater powers for Scotland
in the event of a No vote, Scots could
have the best of both worlds, Mr
Darling said.
In Glasgow, the blue badges of the Yes
to independence campaign dominated
central Buchanan Street, with a convoy
of cars driving through the town
waving Yes banners and tooting horns.
Buskers also sang in support of
independence and a bagpipe-and-drum
band drew a large crowd.
The Glasgow vote will be crucial to the
result, given the city's size.
Thousands of people marched to
the BBC headquarters, complaining
the state-run broadcaster was biased
against the Yes campaign.
"We pay our licence fees. We don't
want them to favour us - we were
just marching for an impartial state
broadcaster," said Liz, a teacher.
Mr Salmond has frequently accused
the BBC - which could be carved up

if Scotland votes for independence - of

siding with the unionists.
A BBC spokesperson said the
corporation had been "rigorously
impartial".
But the incident showed the high
emotions and divisions stirred by the

referendum, which could result in the end

of the 307-year-old union with England
and the break-up of the United Kingdom.
"No one wants to forget what we
achieved together during the two World
Wars. But where's the vision for the
future?" said Ian, an IT manager from
Glasgow who had been on the march.
Independence supporters say it is time
for Scotland to choose its own leaders
and rule itself, free of control from
London and politicians they say ignore
their views and needs.
No campaigners say Scotland is more
secure and prosperous as part of the
United Kingdom and the end of the
union would destroy three centuries of
bonds and shared history as well as bring
in economic and financial hardship.
The question on the ballot paper will
ask simply: "Should Scotland be an
independent country?" followed by
two options: "Yes" and "No".
Out of four new polls, three showed
those in favour of maintaining the
union with a lead of between 2 and 8
per cent.
The other, an ICM poll conducted over
the internet, showed supporters of
independence in the lead with 54 per
cent and unionists on 46 per cent.

Qantas Warns Facebook Users Of

$1500 Holiday Voucher Scam

QANTAS has put the brakes on a

Facebook scam using the airlines
official logo to get personal and
financial details from victims.
The promotional banners invited
people to like them and share with
friends in order to win a prize of a
$1500 travel voucher.
Those who clicked on the page were
then taken to an imitation Qantas
Facebook page where they were asked
to provide personal details.
A Qantas spokeswoman said the scam
had nothing to do with the airline.
Our campaigns are always run from
our authenticated Facebook page
identified by its authorised blue tick, or
through the official Qantas website,
said the spokeswoman.
Individuals who encounter the page
are advised not to provide personal
details.
If unsure, we encourage you to get in

touch with Qantas to confirm before

divulging any information.
She said Qantas had already had a
number of the scam pages removed.
Facebook have been advised of
the scam and are investigating, the
spokeswoman said.
The latest promotion claims to be a
birthday celebration even though
Qantas does not mark its anniversary
until November.
It comes as the official Qantas
Facebook page runs a competition
offering a chance to win a seat on the
inaugural A380 flight from Sydney to
Dallas Fort Worth on September 29.
Similar Facebook scams have also
targeted other airlines, including Jetstar.

Feng Xiao Told Ex-Partner

To Clean Apartment Or He
Put Sex Tape Online
A MAN allegedly tried to blackmail his former partner into cleaning his
apartment by threatening to post a sex tape of her online.
Feng Xiao, 21, and the 20-year-old
woman fell in love after meeting while
studying English at a language school
in Auckland, New Zealand.
She eventually shared an apartment, as
reported. The woman moved out of the
apartment in December last year and
within weeks Xiao allegedly sent her
messages online asking for money to
pay for a large phone bill he had racked
up making overseas toll calls.
When she declined, Xiao said unless
she gave him $1400 and clean the
apartment he would post a video of her
performing a sex act on him.
He then allegedly sent her a snapshot
photo of their sex tape to prove he was
serious.
The victim contacted police. She
admitted that the video had been
made with her consent, but she had
not given Xiao permission to post it

online.
She also informed police that she had
been physically abused by Xiao during
their relationship. When interviewed
by police, she also told officers about
the physical abuse she had suffered
throughout the relationship. Initially,
she was slapped and punched, but the
assaults became worse.
On one occasion at school, the pair
argued after she allegedly was accused
of looking at other men. When they got
home Xiao allegedly punched her in
the stomach, held a knife to her throat
then smashed her over the head with a
cup.
Xiao was charged with three counts
of assaulting a female and one of
blackmail. He pleaded guilty to the
offences at Auckland District Court.
Xiao will be sentenced at Auckland
District Court on Monday.

Tropical Storm, Odile Drenches

Baja After Slamming Mexican
Resorts

The once-powerful Hurricane Odile

weakened to a tropical storm as
it worked its way across the Baja
California peninsula early Tuesday.
Still packing 65 mph winds, the storm
lashed the region with torrential rains
and the potential for flash flooding,
according to the National Hurricane
Center. Rainfall amounts of 6-12 inches
are forecast, with isolated amounts of
up to 18 inches.
Odile left a mess in its wake
snapped palm trees, washed out roads
and tapped tourists trapped at Mexican
resorts.
The storm left stunned residents and
tourists in its wake.
Sarah McKinney, who was in Cabo San
Lucas on maternity leave from her job
in Arkansas when the then-Category 3
storm hit with 125 mph winds Sunday
night, tweeted photos of the wreckage
Monday: the collapsed roof of a
restaurant, a shuttle van flipped over,
a resorts swimming pool pushed into
the ocean.
Every car she walked by after the storm
had broken windows, she wrote. The
normally pristine marina in the idyllic
resort town was littered with debris.
2 days ago we walked along the
marina happy with not a care in the
world, she said. Today Im shocked
and saddened.
The powerful storm caused severe
damage at the airport in Los Cabos,
Mexicos national director of civil
protection said, according to CNN
affiliate FOROtv.
Early Tuesday the storm was about 25
miles (40 km) west-northwest of Santa
Rosalina, Mexico, packing winds of 65
mph (100 kph) as it headed northwest.
It was expected to continue to weaken,
becoming a tropical depression on
Wednesday, forecasters said.
On Sunday, gales from Odile whipped
torrents of rain ashore, chasing visitors

in popular tourist destinations into

close quarters. Streets in Cabo San
Lucas were drenched. Palm trees were
knocked over, and outdoor markets
were trashed.
Raul Frias, from Mexico City, was at
Club Regina in Cabo when he tweeted
that he felt a great vibration in a
shelter and that something big was
coming down.
McKinney and her newborn daughter,
Madison, had already evacuated out of
harms way from their first hotel to a
second one. But even there, the room
roared like a wind tunnel as Odile
passed over.
At least 15,000 tourists were sharing
McKinneys experience in Cabo,
Mexican civil defense official Luis
Felipe Puente said.
She piled up her belongings in the
bathtub to protect them from the water
seeping through the door to her room.
She dammed it up with a mattress, but
it still came in about an inch deep.
Ive cleared the beds and linen closets
and have my daughter and I held up in
the bathroom, she told CNN.
Then the winds subsided. Madison fell
asleep.
The pressure was horrific, but now
it is eerily calm just how people
describe when the eye passes over,
she said.
But then the winds smacked the hotel
again, and McKinney headed back into
the bathroom.
The backhalf is definitely worse, she
posted to Twitter. More debris and
stronger winds and rain. Bedroom is
getting soaked from water seeping in.
Odile was earlier predicted to bring
possibly life-threatening flash floods
and mudslides, forecasters said Sunday.
Ports and beaches have been closed,
and school classes and celebrations
for Mexicos Independence Day were
canceled in Baja California Sur state.

Mistakes Adults Make

Communicating With Teenagers
By far the most common issue that
comes up when discussing teenagers
with adults is that of communication.
Be it with regards to maintaining good
relationships, effective discipline, or
setting boundaries, the practice and
skills of good communication are
always involved.
There are lots of ways that
communication skills can be improved.
An obvious method of creating better
communication outcomes is to reduce
communication mistakes. This article
outlines 5 common pitfalls adults often
encounter when communicating with
teens.
There is an old saying that we are
all given two ears and one mouth, to
remind us that we should spend twice
as much time listening as talking.
This is especially important when
communicating with teenagers.
Teenagers often have things to say to
adults, but get frustrated at the lack
of opportunity. Ironically adults in
turn get frustrated at teenagers not
communicating or sharing anything
with them. Listening carefully and
asking helpful questions will often
illicit far more information from a
teenager, than trying to set the agenda
and focus on topics that you think are
important.
This tendency of adults to speak more
than listen is responsible for generating
unnecessary conflict. Adults will
often react based on assumptions to
teenagers. By asking questions and
exploring reasons behind teen behavior,
adults will be in a much better position
to respond appropriately.
While young teens arent perfect and
still need guidance, communicating in
a more adult manner with them through
discussion and negotiation, as opposed
to lectures, will provide much better
outcomes.
There is a lot to be said for the notion of
self-fulfilling prophecies. The way we
speak can often result in the outcomes
we are trying to avoid.
If you consider, or are worried about,
your teenager being rebellious,
troublesome, or untrustworthy, the
language you use will often reflect your
fears and assumptions. Comments and
instructions will be couched in negative
language, with excessive use of words
like dont, stop, never, and no.
Adults whose instructions to teens
are constantly negative not only come
across as nagging and authoritarian,
but also are more likely to produce
the very behaviour they are trying to
prevent.
Choosing to use positive rather than
negative forms of expression can make
a genuine difference. Focusing on the
desired positive outcomes, rather than

unwanted negative outcomes reshapes

what teenagers hear and hence what
they focus on.
Similarly being more willing to praise
and affirm rather than criticise and
pick on teen performance is important.
Teens are usually very aware of their
own short comings and failures.
However they are less able to see what
they do well. Some adults believe a
job well done is its own reward. While
this might be true, there is nothing that
encourages a teenager more than the
positive feedback of an adult.
Positive instructions and genuine
encouragement
can
significantly
change a teens outlook and behaviour.
Perspective makes a big difference.
The way an adult perceives a problem
is often very different to the way a teen
perceives the same problem.
As adults we have lived through
the many trials and tribulations of
adolescence. What appears like a
major life altering decision to a 14 year
old often looks a lot less significant to
a 40 year old.
Trying to offer a broader perspective
to a teenager with the intention of
helping them through a tough time
can be counter productive, simply
because teenagers cannot take on an
adults perspective. Developmentally
they are not yet proficient at being
able to take on another persons point
of view. Experientially they have not
experienced life on the other side of
many problems so are unable to see
the situation as anything other than life
changing.
All a teenager perceives when adults
try to put their perspective on a
problem is you dont get me or you
not taking me seriously or you dont
think this important, therefore Im not
important.
Some typical examples of adults trying
to be helpful with their own perspective
include:
It isnt really that bad.
In five years you wont care about any
of this stuff.
There will be others.
While the adult perspective may be
the one closer to reality, the effect
on the teenager is to minimize their
opinion which leaves them feeling
misunderstood and isolated.
The challenge of negotiating the path
to adulthood is challenging enough for
teens without having adults who refuse
to acknowledge that they are growing
up making it harder.
As adults, and particularly parents,
it is easy to view our kids as always
younger than they are. It can be hard to
admit that they are growing up. But as
teens get older they need opportunities
to take on more responsibility and

independence.
Adults who continually enforce
boundaries and rules that do not
acknowledge age or demonstrated
capacity
for
independent
and
responsible behaviour, can frustrate
and alienate teens.
Adults are better served by stopping
and considering before saying no to
a request. Be prepared to compromise
when negotiating boundaries and rules
with your teenager.
Ask yourself if your teenager now old
enough or responsible enough for you
to say yes to situations you may have
said no to in the past?
Adolescence is a time in life that can
generate increased conflict levels.

Adults do themselves no favours by

escalating tensions over issues that in
the scheme of things may not be worth
it.
There are obviously issues on which
parents and adults need to be willing
to hold firm on no matter the level of
conflict which may result. However is
an issue of physical safety as important
as the state of a bedroom?
Identifying matters that have room
for negotiation and compromise can
be an important strategy in reducing
the level and frequency of conflict
during the teenage years. Teaching and
modeling good negotiating techniques
and finding compromise are important
skills to pass on to teens.

Avoid Painful Gallstones By Changing Your Diet

Most people dont give much thought
to their gallbladder, a small sac beneath
the liver that collects and stores bile
the substance that helps digest fatty
foods. After you eat, your gallbladder
releases bile into the small intestine to
break up fat.
Yet as many as 20 per cent of Canadian
women and 10 per cent of men have
gallstones by age 60, small pebble-like
substances that can trigger abdominal
pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting.
While diet doesnt directly cause
gallstones, certain foods and eating
patterns can increase the risk of
developing the condition. Too much
animal fat, cholesterol and refined
carbohydrates and too little fibre make
gallstones more likely. So does carrying
excess fat around your midsection.
Yo-yo dieting and losing weight too
quickly also have the potential to cause
gallstones.
Gallstones form when substances in
bile mainly cholesterol harden to
form crystals. In some cases, gallstones
can block the normal flow of bile and
cause symptoms following a fatty
meal. (The amount of cholesterol in
bile is not related to cholesterol in

your bloodstream.) Not everyone with

gallstones experiences discomfort.
Most people dont even know they
have them until theyre detected by
chance during an ultrasound carried
out for some other reason. Silent
gallstones cause no pain and are often
left alone.
One in five people with stones,
however, experience pain and will
require treatment, usually surgery to
remove the gallbladder.
People with a family history of the
condition as well as those who are
overweight and obese are at greater
risk for gallstones. Women between
the ages of 20 to 60 are three times
more likely to develop gallstones than
men. (The female hormone estrogen
stimulates the liver to remove more
cholesterol from the blood which
then accumulates in the gallbladder.)
Changing your diet wont get rid of
gallstones if you already have them.
But it could help ease your symptoms
if you experience discomfort.
Dietary modifications can also reduce
the risk that silent stones will become
symptomatic and help prevent
gallstones from forming in the first

Backache is the most common problem

and here are few home remedies to
cure it.
Stressful life, travelling, workouts or
aging all these lead to one most
common health problem i.e. backache.
It is one health issue which makes us
restless and if not taken care of results
in making our routine terrible. Here are
a few home remedies to get rid of that
backache:
1. Mix camphor in coconut oil and boil
it for 5 minutes. Cool it and store it in
a bottle. Massage it twice in a week
before going to sleep to get rid of
backache.
2. In a bucket of lukewarm or slightly
hot water, add few drops of eucalyptus
oil. Taking a bath with this water will
help you get rid of backache as well as
body pain. Not just that, it makes you
feel stress-free.
3. While you're spending some time

watching TV, put a hot-water bag on

back supported by a cushion. The heat
based treatment will help you recover
backache.
4. Massage your back with mustard oil
an hour prior to going for a shower.
Make sure you take a hot water shower.
5. In a warm glass of milk, add a pinch
of turmeric and few drops of honey.
Make it a habit to have this regularly to
get rid of backache, body pain as well
as cough and cold too.
6. Add ginger while brewing your tea,
it will help you lower the chances of
backache.
7. Using a herbal oil for massaging your
back also ensures a quick recovery.
8. Take a tube sock and fill it with rice.
(make sure to tie off end of the sock).
Heat in microwave for 3-5 minutes,
then just lay it wherever you have the
pain. It works wonders for lower back
pain.

Home Remedies For

Backache

place.
Reduce saturated fat and cholesterol
Cutting back on saturated (animal)
fat and cholesterol can change the
composition of bile, making stone
formation less likely.
To cut saturated fat choose lean cuts of
meat, poultry breast and low-fat dairy
products.
Theres also some evidence that olive
oil a monounsaturated fat can
reduce the cholesterol content of bile.
Other sources of monounsaturated fat
include canola oil, peanut oil, avocado,
almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and
peanuts.
Choosing animal foods that are low
in saturated fat will also reduce your
cholesterol intake. Cholesterol-rich
foods to avoid or eat sparingly include
egg yolks, shrimp and liver.
Increase fibre
Fibre in the diet helps guard against
gallstones by binding to food
cholesterol and bile in the gut, causing
their removal from the body.
Insoluble fibre found in wheat bran,
whole wheat bread or pasta, fruit,
vegetables, nuts and seeds is thought
to be most protective.
Other fibre-rich foods linked to a lower
risk of gallstones include lentils and
dried beans (e.g. kidney beans, navy
beans, black beans, chickpeas).
Limit processed carbs
A steady intake of added sugars and
refined (white) starchy foods can
increase the risk of gallstones by
increasing the secretion of insulin, the
hormone that clears sugar from the
blood. Elevated insulin can increase the
concentration of cholesterol in the bile.
Limit added sugars to 5 per cent of daily
calories roughly five teaspoons (80
calories worth) a day for women and
nine teaspoons (144 calories) for men.
(Four grams of sugar is equivalent to
one teaspoon worth).
Replace soft drinks, fruit punch, and
iced tea with water, low-fat milk,
vegetable juice, or unsweetened tea or
coffee. Choose breakfast cereals that
have no more than 6 grams of sugar per
serving. When buying cereal bars and
granola bars, choose products with no
more than half the total carbohydrate
from sugars.
Choose whole grain starchy foods

such as brown rice, whole wheat pasta,

quinoa, steel-cut and large flake oats
and 100 per cent pumpernickel bread.
Not only do these foods have more
fibre than refined grains, they also
stimulate less insulin release.
Maintain a healthy weight
As body mass index increases, so
does the risk of developing gallstones,
especially if excess weight is carried
around the abdomen. Abdominal fat
can cause hormonal changes thought
to promote gallstone formation.
Weight cycling the pattern of losing
and regaining weight is also linked to
a higher risk of gallstones.
Lose excess weight sensibly
If you plan to lose weight, do so
slowly. Shedding weight too quickly
(more than 3 pounds a week) increases
the risk of gallstones by increasing
cholesterol in bile.
Aim to lose one to two pounds a
week by following a well-balanced
diet. Fasting, very low-fat diets
and skipping meals can decrease
gallbladder contractions and prevent it
from emptying completely.
Meet vitamin C requirements
A low vitamin C intake is associated
with a greater risk of gallstones.
The nutrient is needed to properly
synthesize bile; without it bile
becomes cholesterol-rich increasing
the likelihood of stone formation.
Include at least two vitamin-C-rich
foods in your daily diet: oranges,
grapefruit, kiwi, cantaloupe, mango,
strawberries,
broccoli,
Brussels
sprouts, cauliflower, red pepper, or
tomato juice.
Get enough calcium and magnesium.
Like fibre, these two minerals bind to
bile acids in the gut eliminating them
from the body.
Calcium-rich foods include milk,
yogurt, cheese, fortified plant beverages
and juice, baked beans, black beans,
soybeans, firm tofu, canned salmon
and sardines (with bones), bok choy,
broccoli, collard greens, kale, Swiss
chard, dried figs and almonds.
Good sources of magnesium include
black beans, chickpeas, kidney beans,
navy beans, soybeans, firm tofu,
spinach, Swiss chard, halibut, almonds,
cashews, sunflower seeds, yogurt and
wheat germ.

High Protein Diets May Lower Blood Pressure

Adults who consume a high-protein diet
may be at a lower risk for developing
high blood pressure, research shows.
Researchers from Boston University
School of Medicine (BUSM) found that
participants consuming highest amount
of protein (an average of 100 gram
protein/day) had a 40 percent lower risk
of having high blood pressure compared

to the lowest intake level.

"Protein intake may play a role in the
long-term prevention of high blood
pressure," said Lynn Moore, an associate
professor of medicine at BUSM.
During the study, researchers analysed
protein intakes of healthy participants and
followed them for development of high
blood pressure over an 11-year period.

They found that adults who consumed

more protein, whether from animal
or plant sources, had statistically
significantly lower systolic blood
pressure and diastolic blood pressure
levels after four years of follow-up.
"We also found that consuming more
dietary protein also was associated
with lower long-term risks for high

blood pressure," Moore noted.

When the diet also was characterised
by higher intakes of fibre, higher
protein intakes led to 40-60 percent
reductions in high blood pressure risk.
"The findings suggest that we need
to revisit optimal protein intake for
optimal heart health," researchers
concluded in the study reported.

Prostate Cancer
Continued From Last Week

Zones Of The Prostate

The prostate gland is divided into 3

zones:
peripheral
transition
central
Peripheral zone
The peripheral zone is the area of the
prostate that is closest to the rectum. It
can easily be felt by the doctor during a
digital rectal examination (DRE). It is
the largest zone of the prostate gland.
The majority of prostate tumours
(approximately 75%) are found in the
peripheral zone.
Transition zone
The transition zone is the middle area
of the prostate, between the peripheral
and central zones. It surrounds the
urethra as it passes through the
prostate. This zone makes up about
20% of the prostate gland until the
age of 40.
As men age, the transition zone begins
to enlarge, until it becomes the largest
area of the prostate. This is called
benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
When the transition zone enlarges,
it pushes the peripheral zone of the
prostate toward the rectum.
Central zone
The central zone is in front of the
transition zone. It is the part of the

prostate that is farthest from the rectum.

Because of this, prostate tumours in
this zone cannot be felt by the doctor
during a DRE.
Function
The main function of the prostate is
to produce the fluid portion of semen.
The gland cells within the prostate
produce a thin fluid rich in proteins
and minerals that maintain and nourish
sperm. This fluid is made continuously.
The excess passes from the body in the
urine. When a man is sexually aroused,
the prostate produces larger amounts of
this fluid. It then mixes with sperm and
is ejaculated as semen.
The prostate also plays a part in
controlling the flow of urine. The
urethra runs from the bladder, through
the prostate, and out through the penis.
The muscle fibres of the prostate are
wrapped around the urethra and are
under involuntary nervous system
control. These fibres contract to slow
and stop the flow of urine.

Wine Only Good For Heart

If People Exercise

A new study has revealed that wine

only protects against cardiovascular
disease in people who exercise.
Researcher Milos Taborsky said
that this is the first randomised
trial comparing the effects of red
and white wine on markers of
atherosclerosis (1) in people at mild
to moderate risk of CVD and they
found that moderate wine drinking
was only protective in people who
exercised. Red and white wine
produced the same results.
The study revealed that there was no

difference between HDL cholesterol

levels at the beginning of the study
compared to one year in people who had
either red or white wine, whereas LDL
cholesterol was lower in both groups
at one year while total cholesterol was
lower only in people who had red wine.
Researchers added that the current
study shows that the combination
of moderate wine drinking plus
regular exercise improves markers
of atherosclerosis, suggesting that
this combination is protective against
cardiovascular disease.

'Diabetics At A Higher Risk Of

Heart Failure'

People with diabetes who otherwise

appear healthy may have a six-fold
higher risk of developing heart failure
regardless of their cholesterol levels,
shows an alarming study.
"It looks like diabetes may be slowly
killing heart muscle in ways we had not
thought of before," said lead researcher
Elizabeth Selvin, an associate professor
of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins
University's Bloomberg School of
Public Health.

To reach this conclusion, researchers

employed an ultra-sensitive test to
identify minute levels of a protein
called troponin that is released into the
blood when heart cells die.
For the study, researchers measured
troponin concentrations in more than
9,000 participants.
Those with diabetes were two and a
half times more likely to have elevated
troponin levels than those without, the
study revealed.

A new study has revealed that

consumption of two or more servings
of fish per week is associated with a
lower risk of hearing loss in women.
According to the researchers at Brigham
and Women's Hospital, acquired
hearing loss is a highly prevalent and
often disabling chronic health condition
and although a decline in hearing is
often considered an inevitable aspect
of aging, the identification of several
potentially modifiable risk factors has
provided new insight into possibilities
for prevention or delay of acquired
hearing loss.
Data were from the Nurses' Health

Study II, a prospective cohort study.

In the study, 65,215 women were
followed from 1991 to 2009. After
1,038,093 person-years of followup, 11,606 cases of incident hearing
loss were reported. In comparison
with women who rarely consumed
fish, women who consumed two or
more servings of fish per week had a
20 percent lower risk of hearing loss.
When examined individually, higher
consumption of each specific fish type
was inversely associated with risk.
Higher intake of long-chain omega3PUFA was also inversely associated
with risk of hearing loss.

Several people consume a number

of energy drinks one after the other
in dance clubs and during physical
exercise, which can lead to a number of
adverse conditions including angina,
cardiac arrhythmia and even sudden
death, according to the study.
Professor Milou-Daniel Drici from France
highlighted that about 96 percent of these
drinks contain caffeine, with a typical
0.25 liter can holding 2 espressos worth of

caffeine, which is one of the most potent

agonists of the ryanodine receptors and
leads to a massive release of calcium within
cardiac cells that can cause arrhythmias.
Professor Drici added that this also
has effects on the heart's abilities to
contract and to use oxygen.
The study found that 'caffeine syndrome',
which is characterized by a fast heart
rate, tremor, anxiety and headache, was
the most common problem.

Akshat's Craving For Education

Small wonder Akshat Singh, the latest
to be eliminated from dance reality
show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7', says he
wants to focus on his studies now.
The nine-year-old performer along
with partner Vaishnavi could not make
it to the show's finale, which will be
held next week, despite their highoctane performances and scoring full
marks maximum number of times.
"I am not sad that I haven't been able
to make it to the finals but I am happy
that I made a lasting impression on
audience's minds and won their hearts
too. Now, it is the time to get back to
my studies," Akshat said.
The Class IV student, who considers
superstar Salman Khan as his idol, also
expressed his desire to work with his
favourite actor in a film.
"I am very lucky that the show gave
me the opportunity to meet with
Salman and also dance with him. He

even praised me for my performance.

I wish that I get a chance to work with
him in a film as he often works with
children in his movies," Akshat said. In
the face-off, Akshat was pitted against
professional dancer Shakti Mohan.
"Shakti di is a good performer. In
the face-off also, I gave my best
performance. I feel good that during
my stay on the show, I bagged
maximum full marks, dancing shoes
and winner of dance marathon. All
these achievements make me feel that I
am a winner of the show," said the boy
from Kolkata, who is also planning to
shift base to Mumbai.
The Colors show is now gearing up for
its grand finale, where four contestants
including Shakti, Mouni Roy, Karan
Tacker and Ashish Sharma will be
competing for the 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa'
trophy. They will be judged by Madhuri
Dixit, Remo D'Souza and Karan Johar.

Deepika Furious Over Her

Cleavage

The leggy lass who has been getting

applauded for her dynamic performance
in 'Finding Fanny', Deepika Padukone
was recently blown away by the video
uploaded by a leading newspaper's
online portal , which revealed her
cleavage.
Deepika Padukone, one of the most
successful actress of our time was left
fuming after seeing a daily trying to
gain attention by selling out Deepika's
cleavage.
The video however was not recent, it
was back dated but the malign media
house has featured few other actress
too, in the video article with the same
context, which lead to the anger and
lash out at the so called 'Leading Media
House'. The actor disturbed with the
her portrayal in the video tweeted,
"Supposedly
India's
'LEADING'
newspaper and this is 'NEWS'!!??"
Deepika further added, "YES!I am a
Woman.I have breasts AND a cleavage!
You got a problem!!??Dont talk
about Woman's Empowerment when
YOU don't know how to RESPECT
Women!" We could clearly see the
lady's anger and frustration towards the
media house.
To which B Town celebrities
wholeheartedly supported Deepika
and expressed their support towards
Deepika (here are few tweets)-Karan Johar tweeted, " Appalled....
shocked and disgusted at the level
of disrespect shown..Deepika or any
women in the world cannot and should

not stand for this!! "

Ranvir Shorey tweeted, "Respect, @
deepikapadukone, for taking on this
bullshit. More power to you."
Sidharth Mallya tweeted, "Proud of @
deepikapadukone for standing up and
speaking her mind. Too many others
in this country would have sat on the
fence and kept quiet. "
Her co-star from Finding Fanny, Arjun
Kapoor tweeted, "We have hit a new
low today...forget complimenting a
woman have the ability to respect a
woman first..."
Ranveer Singh, "@deepikapadukone
way to let 'em know! #LikeABoss @
TOIEntertain TUM se yeh ummeed
nahi thi #SMH #owned"
Happy New Year, director Farah
Khan also tweeted, "Above all, be the
heroine of your life, not the victim. @
deepikapadukone doing just that!! (N
THATS how u pay a compliment )"
And to add fuel to the fire the media
house responded to Deepika's tweet by
retweeting, "@deepikapadukone It's a
compliment2 You look so great, that
we want everyone to knew! :)"
This act we can call a mere attempt of
the media house to grab the eyeballs,
or we can also call it a sleazy act to
grab attention as the video posted was
old which was shot during the time of
'Chennai Express'. Digging the past
and disrespecting a women is not
appreciated as a matter of fact the other
actress should also stand up and raise
their voice.

Big B Completes 14 Years

With KBC

"Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC) turns

fourteen this year and so does Amitabh
Bachchan's association with the
popular game show. The Bollywood
megastar finds the longevity "alluring".
"KBC an association of 14 years and
its longevity still alluring," the 71-yearold tweeted.
It was in the year 2000 that Big B
associated himself with KBC, which
also marked his foray into the world
of television. Not only was the show

hugely successful, it widened Big B's

reach, thanks to his demeanour and
humility.
KBC, the Indian version of
internationally popular show "Who
Wants To Be A Millionaire", is currently
in its eighth season and is aired on Sony
Entertainment Television.
Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra,
Deepika Padukone and Rani Mukerji
have already made their appearances
in the ongoing season.

Rekha Imitates Big B

This Diwali, four years after the late Raj

Kanwar directed Sadiyaan: Boundaries
Divide, Love Unities, Rekha will be
back on screen in and as Indra Kumar's
Super Nani. The diva was also seen
in Krrish 3 but that was just a fleeting
appearance.
The upcoming family drama is in the
Beta and Dil mould. Rekha plays a
matriarch who is much maligned till
her grandson, Sharman Joshi, decides
to change his old-fashioned nani into a
hip and happening granny. On the way
to this startling metamorphosis, there
is a reference to an ad with Amitabh
Bachchan.
Says a source close to the production,
"Anupam Kher, who is an old buddy,
comes to the new glam Bharti and
offers her an ad with the Big B, much
to the surprised envy of her family.
Rekha does a take-off on Bachchan's
famous mannerisms, including the
trademark 'hain', as is seen in the film's
first trailer which will be unveiled
this weekend." When contacted, the
film's co-producer and director Indra
Kumar confirmed the news, saying,
"The scene you refer to is a part of the
story, wherein we witness Rekhaji's
transformation and her entry into the
modelling world, following which she

is offered prestigious TV commercials.

When we approached her with this
scene in which she had to imitate Mr
Bachchan's famous mannerisms, which
we felt would add a fun element to the
story, she sportingly agreed. We have
shot it in a humorous way."
The Amitabh-Rekha jodi was last seen
in Yash Chopra's Silsila in 1981.
After that Rekha has dubbed for two
Bachchan starrers. She was Sridevi's
voice in the '86 drama, Aakhri
Raasta, and spoke for Soundarya and
Jayasudha in Telugu director EVV
Satyanarayana's Bollywood debut
Sooryavansham.

Hema Malini Becomes The Most Hated Person On

Social Media Find Out Why!

Hema Malini, who is also a Lok

Sabha BJP MP, has landed in a major
controversy. She has been accused
of making insensitive remarks about
widows. Reportedly, the actress said
that widows from Bengal and Bihar
should not crowd Vrindavan, which is
a holy city in Uttar Pradesh and home
to thousands of destitute women.
If they (widows) are not from here
then there is no need for them to come
here from other states. There are many
famous temples in Bengal and Bihar
too, where they can stay, Bollywoods
dream girl was quoted saying.
Thats not all. She further added,
There are 40,000 widows in

Vrindavan. I think there is no more

place in the city. A large population is
coming from Bengal thats not right.
Why dont they stay in Bengal? There
are nice temples there. The same is true
for those from Bihar.
Naturally, Hema received a lot of flak
on social media post this statement. The
actress became the most hated person
after her quote came out. However,
Hema soon took to Twitter to clarify
her stand.
She further stated that she would
be on Times Now to talk about her
statement. Well, we are really looking
forward to what she has to say about
her controversial statement.

Rajinikanth Moves Court Against

'Main Hoon Rajinikanth' Makers
Superstar Rajinikanth Wednesday
petitioned the Madras High Court
seeking a stay on the release of Hindi
film "Main Hoon Rajinikanth". He said
the film might defame him and upset
his large fan base.
In his petition, Rajinikanth said he has
"never endorsed" any film or product
using his name as it might "mislead his
fans".
Justice S. Tamilvanan, before whom
the case came up for hearing, issued
interim stay on the release of the film
with the title and content.
"Rajinikanth's acting, style and distinct
personality have contributed to his
mass popularity, which he has attained
over the years through his larger-thanlife appearances, signature dialogue
delivery and age-defying stunts in his
films," read the petition.
"Rajinikanth's popularity is likely to
mislead his fans into believing that
'Main Hoon Rajinikanth' has been

approved by him. It is to prevent such

hysteria and confusion among public,
he has always chosen to stay away
from endorsing any film or product,"
said the petition.
Directed by Faisal Saif, "Main Hoon
Rajinikanth" features southern actor
Adithya Menon in the lead as a CBI
officer-cum-contract killer Rajinikanth
Rao.
The film, produced by Varsha
Production House, also features Kavita
Radheshyam, Smita Gondkar, Reema
Lagoo, Sunil Pal, Ganesh Yadav and
Shakti Kapoor in important roles.
Rajini also contended that a film based
on his "name or image" is a violation of
his "privacy" and accused the producer
of cashing on his "super hero image".
The Tamil superstar also said that
neither the film's producer nor director
had approached him seeking "written"
or "oral" permission to use his name in
the film.

Let's Be Cops (PG) **

Law and Order?
Efforts to serve and protect get turned
on their ear with the release of Let's Be

Beauty Hacks Every Girl

Should Know

Have a limited shopping budget?

Can't have a makeup artist on call like
celebrities do? Here are a few tips to
help you look perfect no matter where
you are or how low-budget a month it
is.
Get a gel liner from an eye pencil:
Put the tip of the pencil near a flame
for about 30 seconds and let it cool for
15 minutes or so. It will now give you a
thick and intense line, the way any gel
liner would.
Setting your lipstick: After applying
lipstick, put a tissue paper over your
lips and apply powder over it. This
will set the colour and give you a long
lasting effect.
Drying your nails: Fill a bowl with
cold water. Apply your nail colour and
dip your fingers in the bowl. It speeds
up the drying process.
Keeping bobby pins where they
belong: Very often, bobby pins slide
out of your hair. To stop them from
doing so, simply lay a tissue paper on a
table, put the pins on it and spray them
with any stiff hold hairspray. This will
make them stay on your hair longer
and stop them from sliding out every
other minute.
Greasy Hair Day Rescue: Dry

shampoo is the best way to fix greasy

hair when you can't wash your hair. But
if for some reason, you can't find one,
then use baby powder as it does exactly
the same thing. Put some powder on
your hairline and rub it in. It will take
the greasiness away and make your
hair look good.
Make up wipes everywhere: It's
impossible to get your hands on makeup wipes everywhere. Simply replace
them with baby wipes. They work
the same and baby wipes are usually
kinder to your skin.
Heatless waves: Braid your hair on
both sides really tight and go to bed.
When you wake up, untangle them,
spray and scrunch it and you'll be left
with perfect beach waves without using
a curling iron.
Mascara to perfection: Use a business
card behind your lashes while applying
mascara. It not only straightens out
your lashes, but also stops the mascara
from smudging on your eyelids.
French manicure yourself: Take the
curved end of a band-aid and line it a
little away from the tip of your nails.
Now apply your nail colour and wait
till it's dry before you peel the band-aid
off. Perfect French manicure at home

Natural Tips To Prevent

Hair Loss

It's better to use natural products to

stop hairfall than to go in for expensive
parlour treatments, that may not help
the problem.
Try the following easy tips at home and
see how effective they are in reducing
hair loss!
1. Hot oil treatments: Take any natural
oil - olive, coconut, canola - and heat
it up so that it is warm, but not too hot.
Massage it gently into your scalp. Put
on a shower cap and leave it on for an
hour, then shampoo your hair.
2. Natural juices: You can rub your scalp
with either garlic juice, onion juice or
ginger juice. Leave it on overnight and
wash it thoroughly in the morning.
3. Get a head massage: Massaging your

scalp for a few minutes daily will help

stimulate circulation. Good circulation
in the scalp keeps hair follicles active.
Circulation may be improved through
massage by using a few drops of
lavender or bay essential oil in an
almond or sesame oil base.
4. Antioxidants: Apply warm green tea
(two bags brewed in one cup of water)
on your scalp and leave this mixture on
for an hour and then rinse. Green tea
contains antioxidants which prevent
hair loss and boost hair growth.
5. Practice meditation: Believe it or
not, most of the times, the root cause
for hair loss is stress and tension.
Meditation can help in reducing that
and restore hormonal balance.

Relationships

When Your Man Is A

Mamas Boy

He is caring, sensitive and worships the ground his mom walks on. Yet, that
works against him in the dating scene. Have you ever shied away from dating
a mama's boy? If so, why? We get you the answers.
'Would you date a mama's boy?' is a
common question posed by friends
while discussing the dynamics of
romantic relationships. While it may
sound absurd on the surface (after all,
there is nothing wrong with loving your
mum, right?), the fact is, it determines
whether you appeal to women as a
potential date or not. We get experts to
tell us why.
Wants all attention
Being a mama's boy means someone
who devotes more energy to his
mother than girlfriend/wife. A woman
would expect her man to stand up for
her, prefer her to his mother and spend
more time and money on her. These are
the main issues that women who date
mama's boys face."
Why a turn-off?
Women who date a mama's boy usually
have problems with his emotional
dependence and lack of time for the
relationship. Women want to see their
man as a provider and someone who
is independent. So, when they see him
dependent on his mother, they may
be unable to relate to him in terms of
emotional dependency. There may be
conflicts in the relationship regarding
important decisions for example,
the time spent together. These may
eventually lead the couple to grow
distant. Also, sometimes, the man
may make plans in accordance to his
mother's expectations. He may even
be dependent on her while taking
important decisions. Another concern
is that a wife/girlfriend may want to
be the 'only woman' in her man's life.
So, accepting his mother with equal or

more importance often leads to conflict

and jealousy.
Understand the difference
Logic and reasoning can eliminate
anger and jealousy. Women should
accept that there are different kinds
of love. The love a man feels for his
mother is different from what he feels
for his partner. Each has a place in
his life and one cannot be substituted
by the other. If a man realises this, he
won't feel guilty (the guilt that he is
'letting down' his mum) about spending
time with his partner. Neither will he
feel anxious (the anxiety of letting
his partner down) when he is with his
mother. On the other hand, a woman
will stop feeling jealous when her man
spends time with his mother. She will
also stop feeling victorious when he
spends more time with her.
Key to avoiding conflict
- Evaluate the situation. Sometimes,
being supportive towards your partner
may be helpful. But if it is becoming a
major concern, speak to your partner.
Ask him to balance it out so that your
relationship improves. It would be
prudent to reassess your priorities with
your partner.
- Avoid comparing him to other men.
- Don't nag your partner constantly
about his mother.
- Appreciate the small changes.
- Talk about how you feel without
blaming your partner. Discuss solutions
together. Be assertive, not aggressive.
- Dating someone who is a mama's
boy may require patience and
understanding along with learning to
let go at times.

Why Do You Want to Work Here?

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
A job interview is stressful. The person
who hasnt made a lot of changes isnt
practiced at what is involved (nor
should they want to be), and the person
who has made a lot of changes doesnt
have any idea whats involved either,
or they wouldnt be making so many
changes!
Preparing for the interview de-stresses
the situation considerably. Yet, 78%
of all candidates - regardless of the
level for which they are interviewing wing it! As a result, theyre frequently
dropped from further consideration.

Stainless Steel

$ 3.00

Seemingly innocent questions can trip

you up. For instance, in response to the
question, "Why do you want to work
here?" occasionally people say things
like:

I dont know

Because it seems like a good
place to work

Its a great growth opportunity
for me
Others at least attempt a thoughtful
response:
"I've worked in this industry for
15 years and been very successful.
I feel I can make a difference in
your organization. I have a proven
track record of leadership. I've read
in the paper that your company is
having some problems, and with my
experience as a Director of Marketing,
I can help straighten those out."
While that answer may seem impressive
and appear to suffice, on a scale of
1 - 10, it ranks about a 4! Why? The
answer shows no research, no thought,
and no consideration. It provides
no specific examples of previous
accomplishments and fails to reference
information relevant to the prospective
job. Its very me focused. It sounds
stock and could suffice for any number
of companies. Overall, unimpressive.
So let's look closer at the question:
Why do you want to work here?

Door Handles

The tricky part about this question is

that its often asked fairly soon in the
interview process, before you know
enough about the company -- solely
from the interview -- to answer. The
reason for this question and its timing
is precisely to see how much thought
and preparation you have put into your
search and where you are applying.
So when you score an interview,
dont just sit back and wait for the
appointment day to arrive. Use the
time to research the company. Merely
to hope an interview has a positive
result is not enough. That's forfeiting
your ability to drive up the percentage
of a positive outcome.
Obviously not every company is a
regional powerhouse that you can find
in Dun & Bradstreet, but librarians
are more than willing to help you
find information in their reference
directories. Local newspapers may have
done stories on the company. If youre
out of town, a librarian will photocopy
and fax them to you. And these days,
most companies have a website.
In the interview, tell the interviewer
what you've learned about the
company, and why it seems appealing
to you. Specifics are the key here.
Relate chosen examples from your
experience to the position, the
company, their focus, and their market.
Look to your personality and what
motivates you and how that relates to
any details you learned from the ad,
your recruiter, your friend who referred
you, or from wherever you learned of
this opportunity.

$ 2.00 each
Stainless Steel

$ 4.00 each

Cabinet door handles from 2 - 22 now available

For instance, perhaps their ad stated

that they were looking to establish a
marketing department from ground up.
If you thrive on growth, challenges,
making things happen - there's your
answer - along with examples of how
you have grown, established, or done
market development in a parallel
situation. Share what you can do and
why you feel you can contribute to and
benefit the company. This question is
about how you can benefit the company,
not how the company can benefit you.
Knowing who you are, what you want,
what you have to offer and what you've
accomplished - and having it all on the
tip of your tongue - can make or break
you for a job offer - not just for your
perfect job, but sometimes for finding
any job.
Being able to sell yourself, your
skills, how you can benefit a potential
company and then being able to close
the deal necessitates taking time to
research and learn the company. It
means knowing yourself well enough
that you can apply aspects of your
capabilities to the individual facts and
details of that specific company - and
that you can do it smoothly without
groping for words or just winging it.
If youve chosen to submit your
resume for an opportunity, then from
the beginning - do everything within
your power to stand out from the others
who havent bothered to prepare. If
you dont know what youre looking
for and if you wait until the interviewer
tells you enough about the job to decide
if you want it, youve waited too long.

New Canuck Radim Vrbata Vancouver Canucks: NHL

Likes The Fit In Vancouver 2014-15 Season Preview
Former Coyote excited to play with the Sedins

Ever the good teammate, Daniel Sedin

phoned Radim Vrbata a couple of days
after the Vancouver Canucks signed
the Czech winger on July 3, and they
have spoken several times since then.
Martin Hanzals name still hasnt come
up.
I didnt talk to the guys about him yet,
Vrbata said Monday after skating with
the Sedin twins and a cast of dozens
on a crowded ice sheet at Britannia. I
remember that game.
Its hard to forget. In one period last Jan.
16 in Arizona, the Phoenix Coyotes
Hanzal single-handedly expedited the
Canucks ruin by injuring Henrik Sedin
and Mike Santorelli on sneaky-dirty
plays.
Hanzal mauled Santorelli on a faceoff
and the Canucks season and
time in Vancouver ended with a
shoulder injury. Hanzal then broke
Hank Sedins ribs with a cross-check,
which caused the Canuck captain to
skip the Olympics, lose his decadelong National Hockey League iron
man streak and miss eight games as
Vancouvers season disintegrated.
Also from the Czech Republic, Hanzal
is friends with Vrbata.
The funny thing is, during the game,
we didnt even know about (the
injuries), Vrbata said. We just learned
about it the next day. I was like: What
did you do? Marty is actually a great
guy.
Marty is a tough player to play against.
The truth is, when you played against
Vancouver, it wasnt an easy team to
play against. They have some guys,
too, who arent easy to play against.

Vrbata is supposed to be a great guy to

play with, which is why the Canucks
pursued him vigorously in free agency
as a potential linemate for the Sedins.
The 33-year-old with the good, righthanded shot and 792 NHL games loved
the idea of playing with the Sedins, and
accepted a two-year, $10-million US
contract from the Canucks when he
could have made more elsewhere.
Money-wise,
probably;
termwise, yes, Vrbata said. I was even
considering staying in Phoenix for a lot
less money than I signed for here, but I
was looking for the right situation, the
right fit. In todays NHL, you need to
have good players around you if you
want to be successful.
I was looking for a good fit to play with
the right players, and when my agent
told me Vancouver was interested,
right away you start thinking about
the Sedins. This seemed like the best
option.
Vrbata moved here with his family last
week. He and his wife, Petra, have two
sons Krystof, 5, and Oliver, 4 months.
Vrbatas agent, Rich Evans, is based in
Vancouver, and neither the city nor his
potential linemates were a hard sell.
The right-wing spot beside Henrik and
Daniel is Vrbatas to lose. The wingers
20 goals and 51 points for the Coyotes
last season were more than either
Henrik (11 goals, 50 points) or Daniel
(16 goals, 47 points) managed in their
worst seasons since the 2004 lockout.
Vrbatas 263 shots ranked 11th in the
NHL. His shooting percentage of 7.6
was below his previous career average
of 9.5 and should rebound this season.

Canucks Hope For A Fresh Start With Goaltender Ryan

Miller
The charity golf game, the day before
training camp starts, is supposed to be
a relaxed, good time but for the past
several years in suburban Vancouver, a
cloud tinged with edges of black hung
over the hockey team.
Two years ago, it was the looming
lockout and the unexpected return of
goaltender Roberto Luongo, who had
been set to be traded in the summer
but it never happened. Instead, Luongo
stared down a swarm of reporters and
cameras before he teed off.
Last year, it was a general frisson at
the annual Jake Milford charity golf
tournament at Northview Golf &
Country Club, an air of tension under
the new coach, John Tortorella. It
was a forced version of loose and
relaxed.
This year, the atmosphere was indeed
casual, as the bonhomie of the new
bosses Trevor Linden, Jim Benning
and Willie Desjardins set the
tone. Amid the more sincere smiles,
however, the outlook is worsened from
previous years, the Vancouver Canucks
now an outsider, not a contender.
There are a lot of players with an eye
to redeem themselves, revive their

game it is the art of forgetting, and

remembering, forgetting what went
wrong and remembering what has
gone right.
It begins, again, with a goaltender.
Ryan Miller is the teams marquee freeagent signing, a 34-year-old who was
a lifer in Buffalo before a brief, so-so
stop in St. Louis last spring. He arrives
in Vancouver on a mission to prove he
is the goaltender who was considered

one of the leagues best.

Miller posed a save-percentage of
0.923 in 40 games in Buffalo last
year, which fell to 0.903 in 19 regularseason games for the Blues, and 0.897
in six playoff games, two wins to start
and four losses to end.
It was a little bit more of a challenge
than I thought, said Miller on
Wednesday of the move to St. Louis
from Buffalo.

Wearing a grey Canucks ball cap,

Miller has been working out in casual
on-ice sessions this month with his new
teammates. He stressed the importance
to him of feeling part of a team, of the
city.
For Miller, on the ice with the Sedins
and other Canucks, the veteran
netminder sees the making of a revival.
It makes sense this team should be
able to compete and push, Miller said.
While woeful is the tag that stamped
the 2013-14 Canucks, the team was
less monotone than the end-of-year
review sounds. In the first half, the
Canucks were 23-11-7 and scored 2.7
goals a game. It was the disaster of a
second half, 13-24-4 and two goals a
game, that sunk the team.
Desjardins, a rookie NHL head coach
at 57, said everyone around the team
is keen to get going, forget about last
year, to stop parsing what went wrong,
and how.
Everybody wants to start new
this year, Desjardins said. What
happened last year is gone and thats
the way everybody wants it. Its easy to
clean the slate, its easy to look ahead,
and be optimistic about the year.

Surrey Could Become Home To Vancouver Whitecaps

New Farm Team

Representatives from the City of Surrey

plan to meet this week with executives
from the Vancouver Whitecaps to
discuss a permanent home for the MLS
soccer clubs planned new farm team.
The interest to locate the USL Pro
Div. lll soccer team to Surrey comes
after New Westminster council voted
Monday night against a proposal to
turn Queens Park stadium into a major
soccer field needed to house the team.
New Westminster council said the
$11.4-million project to expand the
stadium was too much of a burden for
taxpayers. The project was also met
with an outcry by area residents and
baseball teams that would have been
relocated from the existing stadium.
New Westminster residents were
to foot the bill, with the Whitecaps
signing a lease.
Surrey Coun. and mayoralty candidate
Linda Hepner on Tuesday said she
has already talked with Whitecaps
president Bob Lenarduzzi about Surrey
getting the franchise.
But she said there are no details on the
cost or the citys role in bringing the
franchise to the city.
We are in the early stages, she said
of the negotiations. Do I think it fits
our tourism strategy? Yes, she said.

But we havent got anything on the

table yet.
We are a city of opportunity and we
think this is an opportunity. We like
to call ourselves a soccer city. It is a
popular sport here.
Hepner would not suggest the location
of a possible soccer stadium. We are
looking at a couple of locations, she
said.
The Whitecaps Lenarduzzi said after
New Westminsters rejection they will
continue to look for another site around
the Greater Vancouver area. We ideally
want to find a partner in the Lower
Mainland that is excited about what the
USL brings to the community, he said.
We are committed to getting it done
by 2015.
Doug McCallum was mayor of Surrey
from 1996 to 2005, and is again running
for the job in the upcoming election.
He said the idea would be too costly
for taxpayers. I dont think it is a good
idea at all, he said. We would rather
build new soccer fields for our young
soccer players, he said.
Under the Whitecaps proposal to
New Westminster the team would
have co-owned the proposed USL
Pro team with Ian Gillespie of real
estate developer Westbank Projects

and Gary Pooni of urban development

consultants Brook Pooni Associates.
The Whitecaps had indicated they
liked New West for its location, close
to Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey.
USL Pro, is a Div. III league two tiers
down from Major League Soccer.
This season, the Whitecaps used a team
in South Carolina as its affiliate.

The 2015 USL Pro season starts in March.

Other cities in the Greater Vancouver area
have also been mentioned as possible
locations for the team.
Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart
said his city has not been in touch with
anyone from the Whitecaps. At this
point we have had no discussions with
the Whitecaps, he said.
