Next Meeting: November 4
th
, 7:30 PM at Harbel (5807 Harford Road)
Agenda: Annual Elections of WIA Board

Presidents Letter

Hello & happy fall,
As many of you know Rob Walshe is one of our right-hand men who helps to keep WIA organized and
well informed. He is a former President & has remained on the board for many years. It is with sadness
that we offer our condolences for the loss of his Dad, who was quite young. Rob is close to his family &
lives in his great grandparents old family home here in Waltherson. Our thoughts go out to him & his
family.
There is a lot going on in the fall in our neighborhoods. Please come & support them when you can. The
Lauraville Fair is this Sat. from 12-6pm at Heinz Park (4200 Harford Rd at Walther Ave). Then, on Oct
23
rd
at 6 pm, at the Enoch Pratt Library at 5910 Harford Rd, Bill Barry, the author of The 1877 Railroad
Strike in Baltimore, will be giving a talk about his new book. This should be a great way to find out more
about our history. On Sat., Nov 1
st
, Waltherson will host another Block Party from 12-5 pm. We have
yet to finalize the place but will announce it in our next newsletter & on our websites. Mark your
calendars & please come out & support us & meet your neighbors.
Novembers meeting will include our annual elections. Our General WIA meeting (now quarterly) will be
on the FIRST TUES in NOV (11/4) at Harbel at 7:30 pm. We have several people on the ballot who are
current Board Members; however if you are interested in running as a board member, please see Mike
Hilliard at Harbel. He is our Chair of the nominating committee. Keep in mind you must be a resident &
are current on your membership dues in order to vote.

Enjoy the fall,
Helene Quinn
President

Please Consider Volunteering for 2015

Our annual elections of the board of the Waltherson Improvement Association will be held at the next
meeting. Please consider running for a position or volunteering in some other capacity. Positions and
committees are listed on the last page of the newsletter. Those interested in a position should e-mail
Mike Hilliard, who is chairing our nominating committee at mikehilliard@harbel.org. If you have any
other questions about what is involved or would like to contribute in some other capacity we would love
to hear from you at mailbox@waltherson.org

Baltimore Broadband Coalition

There is grassroots effort to bring cheaper, faster internet options to Baltimore City by motivating the
deployment of fast fiberoptic technology as has already occurred in many other cities. An adequate fiber
network can then allow competition for the provision of Internet services. By showing strong numbers in
this campaign and by working with our elected officials, they expect to motivate interest by new fiber
providers to invest in Baltimore.

If you are frustrated with internet options and prices here, please consider donating $10 to their efforts
at the link below: http://www.crowdfiber.com/campaigns/baltimore-broadband-coalition

Upcoming Traffic/Roadwork Projects

DOT updates:
The reconfiguration of Frankford intersections at Hamilton Ave & Corse Ave have been
postponed due to funding issues.
The markings of the bike lane on southbound Walther Ave at Parkside will be changing
to prevent southbound traffic from utilizing the bike lane.
They are reviewing the pattern of southbound Walther Ave where the road narrows at
Frankford.
They are looking into whether there is funding to resurface the 5400 block of Pembroke
Ave this year
We are waiting on results from the following requests:
o Traffic Calming on Holder Ave between Echodale Ave and Southern Ave
o Traffic Calming on Ailsa Ave between Harford Road and Holder Ave
o Traffic Calming on Hamilton & Frankford between Harford & Walther.
In the past concerns were raised that speeding concerns still exist for Southern Ave
despite the installation of Speed Humps. Traffic Studies show that speeds on the road
show it still warrants calming.
o If there is interest in pursuing this or requesting traffic enforcement by the
police, please let us know by e-mailing mailbox@waltherson.org or write us at
P.O. Box 3622 Baltimore MD 21214.

Winter 2014

inches in diameter and manhole replacements throughout neighborhood

IN AND AROUND WALTHERSON

TreeKeepers

TreeKeepers is a city-wide tree stewardship program and open to anyone interested in
Baltimore's trees. TreeKeepers promotes healthy trees by educating residents and increasing
their role in the care of the City's trees. Through this training, citizens can become tree advocates
and share the responsibility to pl ant and care for trees in their neighborhood and throughout the
City.
Baltimore Orchard Project
Thousands of pounds of fruit fall to the ground each year around our neighborhoods all across
Baltimore, yet many in our community go hungry or lack access to fresh healthy foods each day.
The Baltimore Orchard Project wants to help change this situation and we want your
participation. We only ask that you respond to the questionnaire bellow and be willing to donate
some of your fruits to the project. We'll do the rest! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RGRCGC9

Rueckert Ave Historic Walking Tour

Chris Muldowney, from Lauraville and the Northeast Baltimore
History Roundtable, was kind enough to put us in touch with Mr.
Nils Rueckert to help us gather some family history surrounding
Walthersons Rueckert Ave. Mr Rueckert has provided us with a
wealth of information on the history of the area. If you are
interested in working with us to develop a walking tour of
Rueckert Ave similar to Lauravilles Montebello Terrace tours,
please contact Rob Walshe at robert.walshe@gmail.com.

Biddison Family Cemetery Cleanup

Cedar Light Grove, who helped us in cleaning up the neglected Biddison Cemetery on Forrester
Ave has contacted us to let us know theyre targeting another cleanup this month on October
19
th
. Were planning to meet on 10/19 at 2 PM at the cemetery (3821 Forrester Ave). Please
consider joining us to help us maintain this neglected piece of Walthersons history.

As noted in the November 2013 newsletter: The story of the cemetery is a sad one; the last
listed owner of the cemetery is Edwin K. Gontrum who died in 1987. He is related to the
Biddisons on his mothers side and hi s father is buried in the cemetery. The Biddisons owned
the farm that existed in the area before the area was incorporated into the City and developed;
we are told that the white house on Corse was the familys old farmhouse. Today many of the
grave stones are damaged and the cemetery is unmaintained. This is one of two neglected
cemeteries in our community, the other being the Burgan cemetery located just south of
Parkwood in the 4900 block of Belair Road. We welcome any suggestions on restoring and
maintaining them.

A play of exuberance, humor, romance, and sadness, Sea Marks is not a traditional love story but

to belong to a place, to hold a way of life in your heart.

Block Captains

Weve mentioned this in past newsletters & will continue to develop this concept. Since we are
a small group, we need your help. If we utilize block captains as resources, we build a stronger
team in all segments of the area. People would go directly to the block captains for their
concerns. These would be filtered out, utilizing the resources & contact we have. Each block
captain would have a list of contacts & then report back to the entire group & to the executive
board. If everyone pitches in, we can all do our part. Please, find somethi ng that is your passion.
Maybe gardening is your thing, maybe vacant houses really annoys you, maybe you want to help
a neighbor whose house needs some repairs. Whatever be the case, if we all do our part, we can
help each other.

Styrofoam / Polystyrene Recycling

If you want to recycle Styrofoam but cannot make it to the sanitation yard, Waltherson member
Louise Harmony has offered to drop it off. Please get in touch with Robert Walshe at a meeting
or by e-mailing us at mailbox@waltherson.org if you are interested. You can also leave a message
for us on Facebook or tweet us @WalthersonAssoc.

Note: CHECK THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER FOR A NUMBER 6. Only number 6 items are
accepted. No peanuts or packing material.

NECOP Northeast Citizens on Patrol

In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The
reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel
uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Participants meet at the Northeast
Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and get a walkie talkie to keep them in
contact with the Police and then proceed to patrol their neighborhoods in their cars. Patrols
normally go out each Thursday and Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. For anyone interested in the
Citizens on Patrol program, please contact Rob at Robert.walshe@gmail.com.

Hamilton-Lauraville (HL) Sprouts

Theres a new family group in town. HL Sprouts is a
parent partnership designed to allow parents of kids
aged 0-12 to meet up, arrange play dates, and get to
know other parents in the area. They are a chapter of
the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance. Check them
out, there are several kid-friendly meet ups going on
each week in the area.
