Program Design Process Tooling Operations Manager Engineer Engineer Engineer Manager 11 Team Formation A team consisting minimum of five students will be formed for each project. Students should select a fellow team member as their student lead who will coordinate activities within the team and also with the faculty advisor. Each student is expected to accumulate at least 150 hrs in his/her project related activities. Try to spend 12-15 hrs per week on the project. Less than 10 hrs per week in your weekly report may result in grade penalties.
12 Team Formation Faculty advisors may not have expertise in certain areas in your project. In such a situation, you need to sign up a Technical Advisor who has the required expertise.
If your project is sponsored by a company, then a company engineer can function as the Technical Advisor.
An advising faculty member can serve as a Technical Advisor in a project that is being supervised by another faculty member. 13 Team Formation Students and their Technical Advisor should sign an agreement, and the required template will be posted on the web course. After project teams have been formed, every team should consult the faculty advisor and fix a weekly meeting time.
14 Weekly Meetings Participation in weekly meeting is mandatory. Unauthorized absence from weekly meetings will be penalized by the faculty advisor. Just sending an email informing absence from a weekly meeting will not result in an excuse for that meeting. Prior approval should be obtained from the faculty advisor for any absence except in a medical emergency. However, documentary proof should be provided in such cases.
15 Weekly Meetings & Reports If you plan to participate in university sponsored events, obtain prior approval from the faculty advisor and turn in any assignment due before hand. Every student is required to give a weekly report to the faculty advisor at the weekly meeting. Do not email weekly report to the faculty advisor under any circumstances. If you are absent from a meeting due to a valid reason, turn in the weekly report at the next meeting with your valid documentary proof. Weekly report format will be posted on the web course. 16 Reports Reports: Engineering Design Specifications (EDS) Preliminary Design Report (PDR) Critical Design report (CDR)
Hard copies of those reports should be given to the faculty advisor. Electronic copies should be uploaded on the web course by the dead line. Missing dead lines for report up loadings will bring grade penalties. 17 Reports and Presentations Report formats will be posted on the web course. Critical Design Report (CDR) should be color printed (single side) on quality papers and bound. Late reports will earn grade penalties as determined by the faculty advisor. Every team is required to make two formal presentations. Students are expected to dress professionally for those presentations. Presentation evaluation will be based on the team performance and individual performances. Within the same team, each students grade may be different. 18 Log Books Every team is required to keep graded reports, research literature, technical papers/reports, technical communications etc; to be used in the senior design II folder. Every team is required to maintain a team log book in which team activities are recorded. The student lead should maintain the team log book in addition to maintaining his/her individual log book. Minutes of team meetings, Work allocation to fellow team members, their progress on assigned work should be recorded in the team log book. 19 Log Books Every student is required to maintain an individual log book (journal) in which the student makes entries/sketches/computations related to individual contribution. At the end of the semester, Individual log books should be submitted to the faculty advisor for grading purposes. At the end of the semester, the team log book should be submitted to the faculty advisor for grading purposes.
20 Final Exam There will be a final exam at the end of the semester. The exam will have 50 multiple choice questions. The exam is closed book, closed notes. Cell phones must be switched off during the exam. Please check out the schedule for date and time.
21 Attendance, Peer evaluation, and Grades Class attendance will be taken at random lecture classes. Coordinator/faculty advisors might look at lecture class attendance and weekly meeting attendance when finalizing final grades. All students are required to attend a minimum number of mid term presentations and final presentations. This minimum number will be notified later. Attendance for invited lectures is mandatory. 22 Attendance, Peer evaluation, and Grades Each student will evaluate fellow team members at the end of the semester. Required form will be posted on the web course. Evaluations should be given to the faculty advisor and an electronic copy should be uploaded on the web course. You should not grade yourself. Please read the syllabus for details. 23 Attendance, Peer evaluation, and Grades GRADES Written Design Requirements report/EDS 5% Logbook and Documentation Management 5% Performance Evaluation by Peer 5% Weekly Reports (13 reports) 10% Performance Evaluation by Faculty 10%

Some of those aspects may include; 1. the conduct of the student during the project period 2. assessment of individual student contribution to the project 3. individual log book 4. weekly meeting attendance 5. total number of hours spent by the student during this semester 6. peer evaluation etc;
27 Faculty Advisor Expectations It is the responsibility of students to: 1. discuss with the faculty advisor and get a clear picture of his/her expectations 2. discuss with the faculty advisor and get a clear understanding of the evaluating/grading procedure 3. discuss with the faculty advisor and find out grades for each assignment if grades are not posted or given to students two weeks after the submission of an assignment 28 Presentations Outside of Scheduled Class Room Time
Some of mid term and final presentations will be scheduled outside of scheduled class room time.
Students will be informed at least one week before such presentations.
Students must have sufficiently flexible schedules to accommodate their presentations if scheduled out side of class times.
29 Students Who Need Special Accommodations
Students who need special accommodations are advised to meet with the coordinator for further instructions.
30 Changes to Syllabus and Schedule Course coordinator reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus and schedule as appropriate during the semester. Changes will be notified to students.
Students should not purely depend on these slides for course information. Every student should read the course syllabus and the schedule posted on the web course. 31 Additional Notes
Senior Design I is very demanding and students will have to work according to a tight schedule. Students must learn to work together with other team members. They must put the team interest ahead of personal differences and disputes.
Each student must be thoroughly prepared to undertake the design effort.
