In more mature, higher traffic networks drive test data

becomes less representative of customer perceived

quality of service, so A and Abis data, collected
directly from the interfaces between the MSC, BSC
and BTS, becomes a critical data source.
One main advantage of using A and Abis data is that
it contains data collected from actual subscribers use
of the network so it yields important information on
in-building and pedestrian users. On the other hand,
drive testing best emulates the experience of
in-vehicle users; however, it only emulates this
experience, it doesnt collect data from actual
in-vehicle users.
Another advantage of A and Abis data is that it contains
a rich set of both downlink and uplink information.
Drive test data is collected on the end of the radio
downlink and, as such, it is inherently weak at
characterizing the uplink. A and Abis data can also
be easily collected during the busy hours where
significantly different interference conditions occur.
Drive test data is often collected during non-peak
times as some peak periods are often adjacent to rush
hours, which make drive testing difficult.
Link Analysis for Protocol-test
Actix A-RLAP for GSM
Actix solutions embody the companys experience as the
market leader in performance optimization for CDMA and
GSM networks. All of the lessons learned and the techniques
developed over a ten-year period have been incorporated
into a set of powerful data-analysis solutions designed to
help maximise network performance and to streamline the
introduction of new wireless technologies. Actix is qualified
to support all major mobile technologies and the company
is fully committed to vendor independence.
for decisive data
The Handover Quality analysis
summarizes key radio link metrics in
the period immediately before and
after a handover to detect cells with
improperly configured handover
settings.

A and Abis data can be collected for all
transceivers, timeslots and other network
resources utilized by subscribers on a
particular cell or subset of cells. Test calls
placed during drive tests typically utilize
only a subset of the infrastructures
resources, and therefore can easily miss
intermittent problems caused by resources
(e.g. timeslots, transceivers, etc.) which
are not utilized during the test call.
The Actix A-RLAP solution provides
powerful analysis of detailed RF data in
Abis traces, together with a wider statistical
view of easy-to-collect A interface data,
enabling engineers to precisely identify
problems and implement the remedies
that will optimize network performance.
Its advanced reporting and charting
features enable the use of Abis and
A interface data for troubleshooting
problems, identifying remedial actions
and implementing improvements.
The Actix A-RLAP solution is based on
the Actix Analyzer open architecture
platform, which includes user-definable
query and open data import capabilities,
enabling it to be used for many other ad-
hoc troubleshooting and performance
analysis tasks.
Actix A Solutions are designed for Windows 98,
2000, NT and XP. For full details please contact Actix

Benefits
Savings in time and resource due to the use of
standard analyses and reports embedded within
the solution to perform routine tasks, such as
design validation or poor quality analysis.
Ability to standardize on a single platform
for performance data analysis, independent
of radio network infrastructure or data
collection device.
The time required to troubleshoot problems
is reduced by synchronizing data collected
from Abis and drive test links.
Improved capacity and enhanced network
performance achieved by using measurement
data collected from actual subscribers,
including in-building and pedestrian users.
Wide range of application areas, including
RF planning & optimization, frequency
planning, RF feature testing & optimization,
operation & maintenance and network quality.

Synchronise calls from Abis
and drive test data sources,
and view unified protocol
messages to accelerate
troubleshooting of problems.
Based upon top-level statistics,
problem network elements can be
selected and a range of relevant
task-specific reports displayed.
Reports can then be selected and
filtered to display detailed data
about specific network elements.
Features
Drill-down from global network statistics at a
BSC level using A data, to cell, TRX, timeslot
and even detailed individual call analysis
using Abis data.
Pre-defined analyses for Abis data include
poor quality contributors, signal level and
interference, connection and handover failure
causes, and many more.
Use Abis analyses to detect and determine
remedial action for problems such as cell
dragging and distant origination and to
perform detailed, call-level examination of
abnormal performance.
Pre-defined analyses for A interface data
include handset types, roaming, channel
assignment, clear and handover cause
codes and many more.
Use A analyses to identify cells with the
worst performance, to compare the
performance of different vendors handsets
as experienced by actual subscribers, and to
analyze roaming subscribers.
Ad hoc multi-dimensional and windowed
query functionality allows generation of
unlimited custom analyses.
Abis data parameters can be correlated with
GPS information in drive test log files to
enable geographical analysis of Abis data.
