Harilal et.al (2006) studied the global value chain for cashew industry particularly with respect
to the cashew cultivators in India and analyzed a cashew cluster at Panturi region in Tamil Nadu
and concluded that those lowest in the hierarchy and women in particular didnt gain
significantly from the growth in the industry. The study concluded with recommendations for
cohesive policy development.
Venkattakumar (2009) studied the socio economic factors for cashew production and
suggested implicative strategies for the betterment of cashew cultivators. Knowledge and
adoption level, technology gap for soil and water conservation, irrigation management are
some of the deciding factors identified that determine the socio economic development of the
cashew growers. The policy initiatives towards promotion of cashew growers cooperatives for
procurement of raw nuts, supply of inputs, credit and infrastructure, small scale processing,
value addition and marketing will widen the perspective of cashew growers.
Yadav (2010) from the economics and research department of NABARD highlighted the
improved technology adoption by cashew growers and identified the constraints like
infrastructural deficiency and senile plantations, inadequate working capital and unorganized
marketing of cashew nuts. The study recommends phased replanting of recommended
varieties, high level of hygiene standards to be maintained by the processors, etc. to achieve a
higher growth rate of production and processing in future, setting up of Cashew Export Zones,
besides providing other facilities, would make contract farming arrangements feasible for
cashew cultivation.
Pavaskar and Kshirsagar (2013) analyzed the Indian Cashew industry for its ability to meet the
competitive challenges of the Vietnam cashew industry which is the world leader in export of
shelled cashew kernels. They concluded that shift to production of spices and rice by Vietnam,
higher per unit value realization for India and availability of plenty of coastal area in India are
some of the factors which give India a competitive advantage over Vietnam.
Senthil and Mahesh (2013) analyzed the production of cashew nut production in India over a
time span of over two decades from 1990-91 to 2009-10.While there has been a gradual
increase in the production but intermittent negative trends followed by rapid decline has been
evident due to disease spread by the cashew pest .Policy initiatives towards promotion of
cashew growers is suggested.
